JOB DESCRIPTION
Professional Practice Fellows are academic staff who support teaching or training in a professionally-based
area. Professional Practice Fellows are expected to maintain professional expertise through continuing
professional development and working within the area of professional expertise.
The duties of Professional Practice Fellows are carried out under the supervision of a senior academic colleague
who is responsible for course design and delivery.
PRIME FUNCTIONS
Assist teaching across a range of papers and clinical settings in the professional area of Oral Health.
This includes preparation, assessment, teaching and paper administration duties, under the
supervision of the academic colleague who is responsible for course design and delivery.
Carry out administration responsibilities.
Contribute to Department’s academic goals by applying and sharing expert knowledge in Oral Health.
KEY TASKS
Facilitate Learning
Support full development of professional skills in students.
Assist with the preparation of course material.
Facilitate learning by conducting demonstrations, tutorials or workshops in relation to professional
training.
Assessment
Assist with assessments by contributing questions or practical exercises within the area of speciality.
Provide within-course assessment and feedback to students on progress towards professional
competence. Assessments can be in class, out of class, or in a practical/professional setting.
Record results accurately in accordance with University processes.
Service to the University and the community and collegiality within the Department and School
Demonstrate and foster collegiality within the Department and School of Dentistry.
Participate in quality assurance activities.
Contribute to external academic and professional activities.
Contribute to continuing education in Oral Health.
Administration
Ensure that administrative processes are completed in a timely and efficient fashion in accordance with
university policy and practice.
Carry out administration for patient records and the Titanium patient databases as required.

Ensure that all marking and assessment reporting is completed within the University’s timeframes and
guidelines.
Meet all compliance and reporting requirements.
Other Duties
Carry out any other duties requested by the Head of Department or designated supervisor that
reasonably fall within the broad parameters of the position or as an employee of the University.
RELATIONSHIPS
Directly responsible to: Convenor of the Oral Health programme, under overall direction of
the Head of Department.
Supervision of: N/A.
Functional relationships with: Students.
Academic staff.
General staff.
Others in the Oral Health, Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene
professions.
Professional organisations.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Registration with the Dental Council (New Zealand) and have a current practising certificate in oral
health or dental therapy and/or dental hygiene.
Appropriate professional experience in the scopes of oral health therapy or dental therapy and/or
dental hygiene practice.
A desire to work with undergraduate Bachelor of Oral Health students.
Evidence of an ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural
backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.
A commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and to equal opportunity.
SALARY
Appointment will be made at the appropriate step on the PPF salary scales, commensurate with experience.
