Impacto sobre la atmósfera:

El viento que presenta el sector, el cual se acopió el material por más de diez años solo estaba
sellado por un cierre perimetral sin techo, comenzó a dispersar polvo de plomo y otros elementos
nocivos por el aire del sector, creando una atmósfera contaminada.

Impacto sobre el suelo

El sitio el cual contenía los desechos, si bien fueron removidos de allí, no se pudo retirar del todo
las partículas de los materiales, por la mezcla que se produjo con la tierra bajo los desechos. Este
suelo permanece hoy inutilizable no solo como sector agrícola, sino que inhabitable e
intransitable, pues caminar por este sector permite una suspensión de las partículas que se

La Municipalidad de Arica creó la Oficina Municipal del Medio Ambiente para apoyar
iniciativas locales y apoyar en las demandas de los pobladores. Hubo varias demandas la Corte
Suprema falló a favor de algunos demandantes y ordenó al Estado indemnizar económicamente
a algunos residentes. La compensación se realizó únicamente a una parte de la población.

Otras denuncias y movilizaciones (marchas, huelgas de hambre, protestas) han obligado al

Servicio de Salud a la realización de análisis de sangre y dar seguimiento a los afectados. Un
primer análisis de orina y sangre con una muestra de veinte niños alarmaron mucho más a la
población, para el caso del plomo, el 50% de los niños tenía 10 microgramos por cada 100 ml
de sangre (en el caso de la Unión Europea el nivel máximo permitido es de 3 a 4 microgramos).
Por otro lado La erradicación de Cerro Chuño comenzó en 2012, pero aún no termina. De las
875 familias que deben emigrar, 278 aún no han sido relocalizadas. Las casas deshabitadas
nunca se demolieron y fueron tomadas por familias chilenas y también extranjeras y luego por
motivacion propia, inició los procedimientos para la eliminación de desechos tóxicos del sitio
de recolección y la reubicación de los residuos. Esta transferencia redujo significativamente la
inserción en la atmósfera del plomo, sin embargo, la suspensión de partículas persiste debido a
la eliminación del suelo contaminado.

Las medidas de mitigación que se tomaron en la zona es la reubicación de las personas que
estaban viviendo ahí y aplicación de un polímero supresor de polvo, cuyos efectos inhiben
la re suspensión del material particulado que se transportaba por acción eólica, tráfico
vehicular y tránsito de personas del sector.
Y por último una medida de compensación el cual se ordeno ordenó así indemnizar a
356 personas por 2.848 millones de pesos ($ 8 millones por persona)
