General
‘The main components of a battery are; the
battery element, anode and cathode plates, and
the separator that separates these components
from each other. Electrolyte consists of the
sulphuric acid and water and it is filled into
the electrolyte cells. When the electrolyte
contacts with the plates, it produces
electrolysis and therefore the current will be
produced and stored in the battery. ‘The
voltage of a battery element is approximately
2V. The battery voltage according to number
of elements is 6V or 12 V. The current, which
is produced and stored in the battery, is sent to
the receivers from the battery's pole ends. The
battery used in the automotive engines;
1, Transmits the required current to starter
motor for starting of the engine.
2. Transmits current to the receivers on the
engine, when the engine is not starting,
3. Balances the voltage in the elec
system while the engine is operating
4, Balances the current in the elec
system when the alternator is operating.
Inspection
Checking the Battery In The Workshop
Before starting these inspections, clean the
battery from outside then visually check for
crack, electrolyte leakage, and corrosion on
the pole ends. If there isn't any problem then
the other inspections must be carried out.
ATTENTION: The cell plugs
IN of the battery must be closed
while cleaning. Do not use
benzene, gas ete. for cleaning,
and lubricate the battery pole end clamps
lightly with the acid protector lubricant. The
oxy-hydrogen is an explosive gases, therefore
do not approach near the battery with a
lighter, cigarette, or any flammable materials.
1. Check the battery's electrolyte level. The
electrolyte level should be 10-15 mm over
the plates. Add pure water if necessary.
‘Ventilation
2. Check the electrolyte density. For this
procedure, open the cell plugs of battery
and immerse the hydrometer into the
electrolyte and read the measurement.
Determine the conditions of the charging
according to measured value.
