CI 405 NCLB Reflective Statement for PTS # 11

Artifact: No Child Left Behind Paper

Professional Teaching Standard 11: Professional Conduct and Leadership

The competent teacher understands education as a profession, maintains standards of

professional conduct, and provides leadership to improve students’ learning and well-being.

1. Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your

knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words.

I understand this standard as addressing the professionalism and interdependency in the

education system. A role as a teacher is more than a glorified babysitting position. It calls for a

respectful demeanor, firm structure, and guidelines to manage behavior and productivity in the

education setting. There are rules and roles of interdependency established to help the schools

stay organized and operate smoothly. The rules and policies must be enforced by all of the staff

and a teacher does not undermine the policies and procedures set out by the school

administrators. This standard most importantly refers to the teacher’s responsibility of staying

informed on legal issues in education that could affect his or her students. By being aware of the

issues that face education, a competent teacher can better adapt the classroom to changes and

help improve the student’s learning and well-being. Teacher’s must take leadership to help create

positive change in the education system and a teacher must upkeep the role of a professional in

the school by understanding and abiding by the school’s policies and procedures.
2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The artifact I chose is an essay about the No Child Left Behind and how it has affect

schools in the rural community. I addressed the problem with insufficient funds and resources

available to the rural schools. Through my research, I discovered that many professionals in the

field of education have acknowledged the unique needs of rural schools and they have suggested

different solutions to the problems. The most common suggestion I found was to have rural

students get involved in virtual schooling and distance education. This summary of the financial

needs of the rural schools and the different ways that rural schools vary from schools in different

locales has opened my eyes to the unique needs of rural schools. I have sought out information

regarding rural schools to better understand this legal issue in education. I now have a greater

understanding of education as a profession and how politics can impact the productivity in a

school by not allowing enough funding for resources.

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

By understanding the unique needs of rural schools, I may try to seek out employment in

a rural area. With the large turnover in teachers from year to year and the lack of resources that

the students have at the schools, I feel that I, as a highly qualified teacher, can be an asset to

them. I can give the students the individualized attention and try to use my creativity to come up

with lessons that do not require costly materials. I will try to expose them to different cultures
and give them opportunities to explore the vast range of occupations, so they do not settle for a

local job just because it is familiar and easy for them. Understanding the needs of rural schools

has caused me to become more interested in policies regarding funding and resources sent to

rural schools, so I will try to stay informed on this legal issue.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

By meeting the standard, I am more informed on the impact of NCLB on rural schools. I

have a better understanding of where funding goes from the NLCB act. Since our society is so

diverse, each area has unique needs when it comes to education. I am more prepared to teach and

learn in a diverse society because I understand the limits of financial assistance my school may

receive, so I can look for outside resources and advocate for funding to areas that are not

receiving sufficient funding.
