Model 2 RTTS Circulating Valve

The Model 2 RTTS Circulating Valve is a locked-open valve

that serves as both a circulating valve and a bypass valve. It is
held closed by internal pressure and/or pipe weight.

A straight J-slot in the circulating valve allows the valve to be

used with a straight J-slot in the packer assembly. This
combination eliminates the need to rotate the tubing to close
the circulating valve or reset the packer after the tubing has
been displaced with cement. When the Model 2 RTTS
Circulating Valve is used, the lower pin on the packer must be
removed and replaced with the proper port mandrel.

Operation
The straight J-slot holds the circulating valve in the locked-
open position while it is run in the hole. Because slippage of
the backups tends to set the mechanical slips on the packer
and close the circulating valve, slippage should be
minimized. The inadvertent closure of the circulating valve is
indicated by the tubing running over.

If a closure occurs, the tubing is raised a few feet and turned

to the left. This procedure returns the circulating valve to the
open position.

The circulating valve is left in the closed position during

formation breakdown, squeeze cementing, or swabbing
operations.

After the operation is complete, the pressure is equalized at

the packer, and the tubing is lifted without rotation. The
circulating valve is then in the open position.

RTTS Safety Joint

The RTTS Safety Joint is an optional emergency backoff

device. The safety joint releases the workstring and tools
above the packer if the packer becomes stuck during
operations.

The design of the RTTS Safety Joint makes unintentional

operation difficult.

Features and Benefits

• Positive sequence of operation helps prevent premature
release.
• Tools above it can be retrieved when string is stuck.

Operation
The RTTS Safety Joint is run immediately above the RTTS
packer so that the greatest number of tools above the packer
may be removed.

Before the safety joint can be used, a tension sleeve located

on the bottom of the lug mandrel must first be parted by
pulling up on the workstring.

After the tension sleeve has parted, the safety joint is

released by right-hand torque while the workstring is
reciprocated a specified number of cycles.

PR Multi-Service Valve

The PR Multi-Service Valve is a full-

opening, annulus pressure-operated
valve for use in cased holes. This tool
can be run as a surge valve or
backpressure valve.

Top and bottom PR Multi-Service

Valves are run at the same time to form
a surge chamber. This surge helps clean
debris from the perforations before a
stimulation treatment, sand control
treatment, or flow test.

is provided when two multi-service
valves are spaced apart in the tubing
string to form an atmospheric air
chamber. When the bottom ball valve
is opened, solids forced into the
perforations are swept into the air
chamber by the fluid stage.

Features and Benefits

• Requires no pipe manipulation to
operate
• Achieves more effective surge
because of the instant ball opening
• Creates the required air-chamber vol-
ume by spacing valves
• Allows circulating or spotting of well
fluid when surging is complete
• Permits through-tubing operations

Selective Injection Packer (SIP) Tool

The Selective Injection Packer (SIP) Tool has opposing cups

that isolate perforations for chemical treatments or
perforation washing. Normal spacing between the cups is
1 ft; however, spacing can be expanded if required.

Some method, such as a ball-and-seat or ball valve, must be

used to close off the center opening below the tool and force
treating or washing fluid through ports between the cups.

A concentric bypass built into the SIP Tool allows pressure to

equalize from the annulus above to the annulus below the
bottom cup. Fluid goes through the bypass, under the tool,
and can push the ball up.

Circulating valves have been designed especially for use with

SIP Tools. These ball-drop valves require approximately
1,350 psi (9308 kPa) pressure to open.

A basic SIP Tool string consists of the following items

(bottom to top):

• A ball-and-seat arrangement or optional ball valves that

closes off the bottom of the tubing below the SIP Tool
assembly
• The SIP Tool assembly
• A reversing valve that drains the tubing when tools are
removed from the well (either a ball-drop circulating valve
or a RTTS-type circulating valve)
• A treating packer and/or RFC III Valve, either of which is
useful in chemical treatment processes

RFC® III Valve

The RFC III Valve is designed to provide fluid control in

high- and low-pressure operations.

Features and Benefits

• Stacking springs in parallel allows for a full range of clos-
ing pressures from 1,500 to 7,100 psi
(10 342 to 48 953 kPa).
• Hardened ball and seat
• Final displacement fluid can be swabbed after a treating
job to help prevent formation damage.
• Should problems occur, the tool can be moved and
replaced without the toolstring being pulled using wireline
or coiled tubing.

When used with the PPI packer or other tools, the RFC III
Valve holds tubing fluid in place while the packer is
repositioned. In low fluid-level wells, the RFC III Valve holds
expensive chemicals in place in the tubing.

Casing Alignment Tool

Severe corrosive action, excess tensile loading, or joint back-

off during drilling operations may part casing strings.
Sometimes these parted sections become misaligned, thereby
making well operations very difficult.

In this case, the well operator must either abandon further

work below this point or realign and stabilize the parted
casing.

Casing Alignment
The Halliburton Casing Alignment Tool has been used to
successfully realign and permanently stabilize many parted
casing strings. The Casing Alignment Tool is made up by
connecting threads at the lower end of the EZ Drill® (poppet
valve) squeeze packer. The EZ Drill SV squeeze packer may
be used by adapting a poppet-type valve adapter kit. When
lowered into the well, the tapered nose of the alignment tool
guides the main body into the shifted lower casing (Figure 1).

Continued lowering forces the larger, close-fitting outer case

of the alignment tool into the lower casing string to align the
casing sections.

Casing Stabilization
The EZ Drill (or adapted EZ Drill SV) squeeze packer is set
by tubing or drill pipe to pack-off within the upper string.
The packer forms an upper seal for placement of permanent
stabilizing cement behind the realigned casing and holds the
alignment tool in place across the parted section of the
casing. Cement slurry is then pumped through the squeeze
packer and the alignment tool (Figure 2). Cement fills the
casing and the formation annular space, surrounding the
casing alignment tool. After the cement has set, the squeeze
packer, alignment tool, and cement are drilled out with a
conventional rock bit, leaving a uniform diameter passage
HAL15580

through the casing ID (Figure 3). The new cement barrier

also helps isolate the casing interior from formation fluid or
gas intrusion. Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3

2-14 Drillable Service Tools

Equipment
After the problem well is evaluated, the proper alignment
tool is built. Casing Alignment Tools are custom
manufactured for specific jobs because of the variety of
diameter length combinations possible. Alignment tool
outside diameters vary according to individual casing
weights to minimize clearance between the alignment tool
and the casing internal diameter. This helps establish
minimum alignment variation between upper and lower
realigned casing sections. Alignment tool lengths vary
because casing separation lengths vary, as do the lengths of
damaged casing. Experience proves that 10 ft of alignment
tool should extend into good pipe on both sides of the
damaged or parted casing.

As mentioned, the lower end of EZ Drill® (poppet valve)

squeeze packers have threads to attach the alignment tool.
EZ Drill packers are not made for casings 7-5/8 in. or larger,
so the EZ Drill SV squeeze packer plus poppet valve
conversion kit may be needed to attach the alignment tool.
This conversion kit also changes the packer from side
discharge to bottom discharge so cement slurry will flow
through the alignment tool and exit at the lower end.

The Low Profile Wellhead Isolation Features and Benefits

Tool (LP WIT) provides all of the
benefits of the conventional WIT in • Lower Profile—easier access
addition to significant new features • Lower rig—rig down height-

• Lower overall weight when rigged
components such as the valve system
up—less lateral stress on wellhead
and pump in connections, when
stroked down into the well, than • Fewer components—lower
conventional tools. Lower rig up and maintenance
rig down height translates into
improved safety during the job.
Additionally, the lower profile of the
LP WIT comprises less weight than
conventional tools which means
reduced stress and lateral forces
exerted on surface equipment and the
wellhead. The LP WIT requires fewer
components to assemble, leading to
fewer problems with its operation and
lower maintenance costs.
