The following is a reminder of the notice concerning weight guidelines for prospective
missionaries issued December 15, 2003.
Young missionaries who are significantly overweight experience difficulties dealing with
the rigorous physical demands of a full-time mission. For example, walking great distances,
climbing stairs, or riding bicycles can put great stress on knees and on the body in general and
can cause physical ailments, lack of energy, and other problems. These difficulties also affect
their companions.
Stake presidents and bishops should be sensitive and wise in considering whether
individuals should be recommended for full-time missions when their weight will significantly
affect their service. If prospective missionaries are significantly overweight, local leaders should
counsel with them about reducing their weight to a level that is in harmony with the guidelines
below and should explain that the recommendation papers will be held until that time.
Individuals who exceed these guidelines may be recommended for service if they have
demonstrated considerable stamina and physical capacity through intense athletic activity. Please
remember that the ability to be active in normal situations does not mean that the individual will
be able to deal with the demanding schedule and activities required of missionaries.
These guidelines are for the use of stake presidents and bishops and should not be distributed.
