Nurse educators are registered nurses (RNs) who have obtained advanced nursing
degrees that allow them to teach nursing curriculum at colleges and universities, teaching and
helping to train the future nurses of the world. They serve as faculty members in both nursing
schools and teaching hospitals, transferring their valuable knowledge, experience, and skill sets
to their students who will ultimately serve as the next generation of nurses.
To be one of the best effective nurse educators, one must have these competencies to be
able to act as both advisers and role models for the students, assisting them in their journeys
toward becoming successful licensed registered nurses:
To acquire the title of qualified nurse educator one must have satisfactorily completed a
recognized nursing education program, including both theoretical and practical components.
Holds a current license/registration or other form of legal recognition to practice nursing.
Completed a minimum of two years’ full-time clinical experience across the scope of practice
within the last five years. And lastly, must have acquired formal teaching preparation either before
or soon after employment as an educator.
It is important to recognize that nurse educators function at different levels within a school,
however, the development of basic or core competencies, common to all teachers of health
practitioners, is an essential prerequisite to attaining high standards in nursing practice.
