TITLE: Concrete Mix Design

AIM: To design the concrete mix proportioning for _____ grade concrete and to determine
compressive strength/characteristic strength of corresponding concrete cubes at 28 days.

APPARATUS

Cement, sand, aggregate, water, cube moulds, trowel, trays, measuring cylinder,
weighing machine, concrete mixer, compressing testing machine, vibrator.

THEORY

The concrete mix design is a process of selecting suitable ingredients for concrete and
determining their proportions which would produce as economically as possible, a concrete
that satisfies the job requirement i.e. concrete having a certain minimum compressive
strength, workability and durability.

The factors influencing the choice of mix proportions are

i. Grade designation

ii. Maximum nominal size aggregate

iii. Type and grade of cement

iv. Grading of combined aggregates

v. Workability

vi. Durability

vii. Water cement ratio

viii. Quality control

This mix design procedure has to be carried out as per IS 10262:2009 and IS 456:
2000 which provides guidelines for proportioning concrete mixes as per the requirements
using the concrete making materials including other supplementary materials identified for
this purpose
Compressive strength test in the final check on the quality of concrete. The test is
performed in order to determine whether the concrete confirms to the standard specification
or not. Out of many test applied to the concrete, this is the utmost important which gives an
idea about all the characteristics of concrete. By this single test one judge that whether
Concreting has been done properly or not. The compressive strength of concrete is
determined in batching plant laboratories for every batch in order to maintain the desired
quality of concrete during casting.

PROCEDURE

1. The mix for _____ grade concrete has to be designed as per IS 10262: 2009 and IS 456:
2000

2. Take designed quantities of cement, sand and aggregates in concrete mixer to produce 3
cubes of aggregates.

3. Add water according to designed to the dry mix and again mix them thoroughly in
concrete mixer.

4. Filled the oiled moulds with the mix and put them on the vibrating table. Switch on the
vibrator.

5. After some time (0-3) min, stop the vibrator and fill the moulds up to the top.

6. Repeat the process until the moulds remain full to the top even after vibrations.

7. After the end of 24 hrs, remove the cubes from the moulds and immediately submerge
them in water.

8. The cubes are taken out only at the time of testing i.e after 28 days from the preparation
of moulds.

TESTING

1. Place the cubes on the platform of compression testing machine without any packing between
the cube and the plate of testing.

2. Apply the load steadily and uniformly till the cubes fail and note down the results.

3. Determine their compressive strength.

CONCLUSION

PRECAUTIONS

1. Quantities of materials should be properly measured and weighed.

2. The concrete should be properly compacted before filling the mould.
3. The moulds should be cleaned and oiled before concrete is filled in it.
