Summary
The specifications in this guideline can be used with Reuse and Salvage Guideline, SEBF8162, "Procedure to Measure
and Salvage Cylinder Head Assemblies and Related Components".

Check the specifications in this guideline before reusing a cylinder head.

Before reusing a cylinder head assembly, check for leaks, cracks, and flatness. All cylinder head components must meet
the recommended specifications in this guideline before being reused.

Note: This guideline covers the inspection of valve seats and replacing the valve seats. Some valve seats cannot be
machined. Refer to Table 7 to determine if a valve seat can be machined. Specialized manufacturing processes
were used on these parts. Machining these parts will significantly decrease the life of the engine.

NOTICE

The valve projection and recession specifications within this guideline

are for measurement of wear from newly manufactured cylinder
heads. Due to the multiple machining steps and compounding of
tolerances in rebuilt cylinder heads, some rebuilt heads (REMAN or

Recondition the cylinder heads by using the following guidelines.

1. Clean the cylinder head assembly. Refer to, SEBF8162, "Procedure to Measure and Salvage Cylinder Head
Assemblies and Related Components".

2. Remove the gasket material. Refer to , SEBF8162, "Procedure to Measure and Salvage Cylinder Head Assemblies
and Related Components".

3. Check the thickness of the cylinder head. Refer to Table 4.

4. Check the flatness of the surface. Refer to Table 4.

5. Check the surface for cracks or leaks. Refer to , SEBF8162, "Procedure to Measure and Salvage Cylinder Head
Assemblies and Related Components".

6. Check the surface of the combustion area for damage or erosion.

7. Inspect the valves, valve seats, valve springs, and valve guides for damage.

Note: Replace the components that do not pass the inspection. If the components meet the criteria for reusability,
then the components may be reconditioned.

8. Use the vacuum test after the cylinder head has been rebuilt. Refer to , SEBF8162, "Procedure to Measure and
Salvage Cylinder Head Assemblies and Related Components".

9. Protect the cylinder head assembly against storage or shipping damage. Refer to , SEBF8162, "Procedure to
Measure and Salvage Cylinder Head Assemblies and Related Components".

Cylinder Head Thickness

Before the cylinder head can be reused, the cylinder head thickness must be checked.

The cylinder head can be machined to remove any damage. At the time of this publication, some cylinder heads must
remain within factory specifications. Refer to Table 4 for the minimum thickness of the cylinder head. The thickness of
the cylinder head must be within the specifications in Table 4 to comply with the regulations on emissions. If the
thickness of the head is beyond the minimum thickness, the head can be reconditioned by utilizing thermal spray.

Note: An alternative solution will be provided in the future for the engines that must remain within factory
specifications.

If the head surface requires reconditioning, the surface must be built up utilizing thermal spray so that the cylinder head
thickness will be maintained at the original specifications. Refer to , SEBF8162, "Procedure to Measure and Salvage
Cylinder Head Assemblies and Related Components" and , SEBF2119, "Thermal Spray Procedures for Cylinder Head".

Valve spring base to combustion face measurement

(A) Thickness of Cylinder Head

Illustration 3 is of a C7 cylinder head, but is illustrative of where to measure for all cylinder heads.

The thickness of the cylinder head is measured from the valve spring base to the combustion surface. The valve spring
base makes for a good datum for measuring cylinder head thickness because it receives minimum wear through the
engine life. Also the valve spring base remains unchanged during cylinder head salvage such as machining and/or metal
spray procedures.

Injector Sleeve
(1) O-ring Seals
(2) Location for clean engine oil
(3) Injector Sleeve
(4) Location for 4C-9507 Retaining Compound

Stainless steel injector sleeves (3) with O-rings (1) are used between each unit injector and the cylinder head casting.
The injector sleeves seal coolant within the head. The injector sleeves will not usually need to be replaced. The three O-
rings should be replaced when the head is removed for reworking the valves or if the head is placed into a hot tank for
cleaning.

Before you install the injector sleeves (3), 4C-9507 Retaining Compound should be applied to area (4). Clean engine oil
should be applied to area (2). Use the 9U-6891 Injector Tool Group and a suitable hammer to install the injector sleeve
(3) into the cylinder head.

Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly for your machine to find the tooling that is used to remove a unit injector
sleeve. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly for your machine for disassembly and assembly information.

Flatness of the Surface

Maintain the original specifications for all cylinder head assemblies during reconditioning. Refer to Table 4 for the
recommended flatness of the cylinder heads.

Inspection for Valve Guides

Valve guides must be measured for installed height and inside bore diameter.

Use the 5P-3536 Dial Bore Gauge Group to measure the bore of the valve guide. Check the Special Instruction,
GMG02562, "Using the 5P-3536 Dial Bore Gauge Group to Check Cylinder Valve Guides" for additional information.

Some models have oversized valve guides. If the bore exhibits excess wear or the bore exhibits excess damage, rebore
the head and use an oversized bore. Refer to Table 6 for oversized bore dimensions. Refer to your parts manual for the
latest parts information, which includes the oversized valve guides that are available.

Note: Replace the valve guide if the measurement of the bore is greater than the specifications in Table 6. Refer to the
Disassembly and Assembly for your machine.

Installation of the Valve Seats

Replace the valve seat inserts when machining cannot be performed. Refer to the service manual for disassembly and
assembly for the removal and installation instructions of valve seat inserts. Refer to the "Replacing Valve Seats" section
of this guideline for the proper procedure to replace a valve seat.

Note: Some valve seats cannot be machined. Refer to Table 7 to determine if a valve seat can be machined.
Specialized manufacturing processes were used on these parts. Machining these parts will significantly decrease
the life of the engine.

NOTICE

Some C7 engines are experiencing corrosion on the 217-5213 Valve

Seat Insert and the 155-9504 Valve Seat Insert.

If corrosion is found on 217-5213 Valve Seat Inserts, replace the valve

seat inserts with 272-9813 Valve Seat Inserts. The 272-9813 Valve Seat
Inserts are made from an alloy that is corrosion resistant.

If corrosion is found on 155-9504 Valve Seat Inserts, replace the valve

seat inserts with 278-0453 Valve Seats. The 278-0453 Valve Seats are
made from an alloy that is more corrosion resistant.

Part numbers are etched on the outer surface of the valve seat inserts.

The 278-0453 Valve Seats and 272-9813 Valve Seat Inserts are pre-
finished. Pre-finished valve seat inserts do not require any additional
machining in the cylinder head.

Replacing Valve Seats

Use this section to determine the procedure to be used to replace valve inserts. More options will be added in the future.

Note: The circular runout between the valve seat and the valve guide must be within 0.08 mm (0.003 in).

Note: If your engine is a marine engine, do not machine the inserts for the intake. You must use the original inserts. You
must machine the depth of the bore for the valve seat. Remove the same amount of material from the bottom of the bore
as the amount of material from the head.

Valve Springs
Use Reuse and Salvage Guideline, SEBF8002, "Visual Inspection of Valves, Valve Springs, and Valve Bridges" for
procedures to visually inspect the valve springs and procedures to measure the straightness of the valve springs.

Specifications for valve springs can be found in Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8034, "Valve and Valve Spring
Specifications".

Use Reuse and Salvage Guideline, SEBF8002, "Visual Inspection of Valves, Valve Springs, and Valve Bridges" for
procedures to visually inspect the valves. Use a 5P-6518 Parts Reusability Fixture Gp or a 6V-7059 Micrometer
(MULTIPLE ANVIL) with a 6V-2034 Micrometer Adapter to measure the valve lip thickness. Refer to Special
Instruction, SMHS6998, "Instructions For The Use Of 5P6518 Fixture Group - Parts Reusability" for more information.

Specifications for valves can be found in Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8034, "Valve and Valve Spring
Specifications".

Note: Coat the intake and the exhaust valve stems with engine lubricant prior to installation in the cylinder head.

Vacuum Test for Valves

Perform a vacuum test after the head is assembled. Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8162, "Procedure to
Measure and Salvage Cylinder Head Assemblies and Related Components" for methods and procedures to use the
vacuum test on valves.

Valve recession and projection are measured from the combustion area of the cylinder head to the valve head when the
valve is closed. Increased valve recession or decreased valve projection can be caused by wear of the valve face or wear
of the sealing surface on the insert.
