Error
Message Error codes appear on the DCU screen in conjunction with the opera-
Faults tional “DIAGNOSTICS FAILURE” messages. When any of these mes-
sages appear, the numbers listed under “ERROR DATA” represent the
error codes found in the following listing. Error codes can be very use-
ful in system troubleshooting and problem correction.
In the following listing, you will find entries which include the error code
(as displayed on the DCU and CPU cards), relevant error information,
and a brief explanation of what the error code actually means. You will

Error Code
Categories The following list represents the system error codes (code numbers as
displayed on the DCU) which have been divided into the following gen-
eral error categories:
The above general categories are only guidelines, and may not be mutu-
ally exclusive. For example, error code 273 may not be associated only
with the System Manager, but may also be associated with another com-
ponent of the system. As you read through the error codes, you will find
some numbers “missing” from the typical numerical sequence. Leaving
these numbers “open” allows for future expansion and enhancements to
the Spectris MR Injection System’s software.

Spectris MR Service Manual
Theory of Operation
Display The Display Control Unit (DCU) is the main point of operator data entry
and display. It consists of the LCD display panel, touch overlay, keypad
Control overlay, DCU CPU card, DCU interface card, LCD / Touch Screen, and
Unit an optional handheld illuminated startswitch.
The DCU’s function is to allow the operator to: program, confirm start,
hold, stop, or disarm an injection; configure the operation of the injec-
tor; display injector status; and view and respond to feedback. The
operator may use either the touch screen, overlay keypad, or illumi-
nated start switch to input commands. The LCD panel displays the
02/04/2005 at 09:36:26.
The DCU interfaces with the MCU via a cable. The cable contains a
serial communications channel, control signals, and power. The com-
munications channel is a 19.2K baud, full duplex RS-422 link. All mes-
sage packets incorporate a CRC to ensure data integrity. The control
signals include a “Key Switch Closure Detect” interrupt, and power
control. The power lines supply the 24 VDC used to power the DCU.
The LCD panel is a VGA compatible 640 x 480 pixel graphic display.
The LCD panel is the operator display device. Information to be dis-
played is sent to the DCU from the MCU. The data from the MCU is
stored in 256K of system RAM. The DCU microprocessor determines
what information is displayed on the screen, selects the proper charac-
ter set, and sends the data to the VGA controller via the data and
address bus. The VGA controller then updates the display image.
The LCD panel is fitted with an analog touch overlay. The microproces-
sor translates screen touches into a set of X-Y coordinates. These
coordinates are transmitted to the MCU, which decodes them and
defines the appropriate action.
The DCU Interface card contains the circuitry to support the LCD and
touch overlay.

System Clocks There are three clock drivers on board which supply the four clock
rates necessary to run the DCU. The CPU clock provides the 16.78
Mhz signal for the CPU. It also provides a 32 Khz clock to the VGA
controller. A 25 Mhz and a 43.9 Mhz clock supply timing signals to the

VGA controller.
VIEWED/PRINTED:
Memory A 4 MB flash card stores the DCU program (firmware), screen images
(plates), and character sets (English, French, German, etc.). The flash
memory runs in 16-bit mode, and is controlled by chip selects form the
PLA.
The 256K RAM memory stores information form the MCU, and scratch
pad data for the DCU.

PLA The PLA controls flash card timing, system timing, and the VGA
controller.
VGA Controller Screen display information, along with character set and display data,
is passed from the CPU (via the data and address busses) to the FGA
controller, which then loads the video RAM. The VGA controller reads
information from the video memory, to continuously update the LCD
image. The video RAM contains an “image” of what is displayed on the
LCD. The VGA controller accesses the video RAM at a rate of 43.9
Mhz. The VGA controller issues a “Ready Signal” to the 68332 via the
PLA when it is valid to send information to the video RAM.
Display Panel
Contrast Control The DCU’s 68332 controls the LCD contrast level in response to key-
pad inputs. The microprocessor writes to an EEPOT, which adjusts the
negative logic voltage to the LCD, through the LCD Logic Control cir-
cuitry. Because the EEPOT is a non-volatile memory device, the DCU
maintains the last adjustment made when power is removed.
Input / Outputs All inputs form the keypad, except the Start/Hold, are decoded by a 4-
row/4-column keyboard encoder, and are then processed by the
68332. The Start/Hold and Illuminated Startswitch are tied directly to
the processor. An A/D converter interfaces touch screen inputs to the
68332. The DCU microprocessor performs initial processing and valid-
ity checks, then informs the MCU via the RS-422 communication link.
Simultaneous to the DCU’s 68332 receiving the input, a key switch clo-
sure signal is sent directly to the MCU via the DCU-MCU interconnect
cable. This signal alerts the MCU that the DCU is processing an input.
5-4
Theory of Operation
A/D Converter The A/D converter converts the analog signals from the touch screen
and system voltage levels, into digital signals which can be read by the
microprocessor. System voltage levels are monitored by the Start-up,
Pre-arm, and other diagnostic routines. Test voltages are applied to the
A/D during diagnostics to ensure that it is functioning within the correct
ranges.
Power Two DC/DC converter circuits convert the 24V power supplied by the
MCU, to +5V and -24V power. The +5V powers the system logic and the
LCD backlight driver. The -24V is the negative logic voltage, adjusted by
02/04/2005 at 09:36:26.
Speaker The speaker driver circuitry is driven by a PWM signal from the 68332, to
generate the different levels of volume and pitch used to provide audible
feedback to the user.
Diagnostic LEDs The service diagnostic LEDs are mounted on the DCU CPU board, and
are driven directly by the microprocessor. The light on the external start
switch is powered by the arm light drive signal, which is also controlled
directly by the 68332. The external start switch, touch screen, and key-
board encoder each have hardware driven LEDs to indicate electrical

The touch screen can be thought of as two plates, one on top of the
other. The bottom plate electrically controls the X and Y DC voltage lev-
els. The top plate sums both together into one analog voltage signal,
which represents the coordinate of the touch point. To determine the X
and Y DC voltages, a fixed +5 volts is applied to the upper right corner of
the bottom plate, and 0 volts is applied to the lower left corner of the
same plate. The X signal is applied to the upper left corner, and the Y
signal is applied to the lower right corner. The interface circuit automati-
cally performs the following functions:

Touch Screen (cont.) • When X is 0 volts and Y is +5 volts, a horizontal voltage divider is
formed on the screen. This provides the X DC level voltage, typi-
cally between 0.75 and 4.3 volts. The A/D conversion is started,
and the result is stored in the X DC level RAM location.

It contains all of the active electronic and electro-mechanical devices
Control which power, drive, and control the Head Stand Unit (HSU).

EPROM The system is designed to use a single EPROM device. The socket
can accept 32-pin devices, but presently uses 28-pin 64 Kbyte
devices. The device is segmented into two 32 Kbyte sections. The
upper 32K contains product software, and the lower 32K contains BIT

section, with the default set to address the upper half with product
code. In order to address the BIT portion, a BIT connector must be
installed, and the HCU must undergo a power-up cycle.
UART Interface with the MCU is via the OTR infra-red RS-422 communica-
tions link. The UART transmits and receives data in a half-duplex
mode, at a rate of 9600 baud. This communication link is constantly
monitored. If a valid message from the MCU is not received every sec-
ond, the CPU places the system in the power-down (sleep) mode.

RAM There are two 8Kbyte RAM chips located on the CPU card, with only
one RAM chip utilized at any given time. The system continuously
transfers information from one chip to the other, while performing test-
ing and diagnostic routines (at power-up, and once per injection) on
the unused chip. Chip selection is performed by the CPU.
EEPROM The system is designed with serial EEPROMs for storage of crucial
data (for pressure calibration). Data is written only during BIT mode.
Motor Controllers The system utilizes two motor control processors, one for each motor.
These controllers are programmed by the microprocessor with acceler-
ation, velocity, and position end point data. The controllers then calcu-
late the velocity trajectory profile. The output of the controllers are a
direction, and a 7 KHz pulse width modulated signal. When com-
manded to start, the controllers set the direction logic, monitor position
feedback from the motor encoders, and servo the motors using the
PWM signal to switch the H-bridge drive circuits. To achieve the
required signal level, (converting HMOS to CMOS), 74HCT245 level
converters are used. If the incoming +5V power to the motor control-
lers falls below 1.3 V, the level converters tri-state.
A/D Converter The MAX191 is a 12 bit analog to digital converter used in parallel bus
mode. Inputs to this device are supplied by a 16-channel multiplexer,
located on the power card.

in the event of a short circuit. The Auxiliary card also contains two
LEDs that are used in troubleshooting; the first of which activates in
conjunction with the illumination of the armed indicating lamps (visible
only by removing the HCU top cover), the second is activated if the
arm indicating lamps enter a current limit state (visible from the outside
of the HCU housing).
Load Switches The HSU load switches (Load and Enable) are channeled through the
Documentation Systems. Prior to use, you are responsible to confirm this copy's revision is the latest released.
Power Controller To conserve system battery usage, there is a provision for removal of
the voltage supply from most HCU circuitry. If communications from
the MCU is halted or interrupted for greater than 1 second, the CPU
uses a logic line to remove power. Once the unit is in this “power down”
or “sleep” mode, re-application of power is initiated by resetting the
HCU, or, when communications are detected on the HCU receive line.
The PDN LED on DS2 flashes to indicate “power down” mode.
ESD Protection ESD protection is provided to clamp transients on analog and digital
lines to the CPU. These devices are utilized on lines that leave the
HCU.
Safe Relay The safe relay control uses a flip-flop to drive the power FET located
on the Power card. To ensure that the flip-flop operates properly if
MCU communication is lost, the flip-flop is controlled by a PIC 16C54
chip that monitors MCU/HCU communications. This PIC chip is a
back-up to the CPU IC, and will disable the flip-flop if communications
are found to be corrupt.
Voltage Supply The main +5V supply is also derived on the Auxiliary card. There is a
+5V switching regulator which takes the switched battery voltage and
converts it to +5V, to supply most HCU ICs.
5 - 12
Theory of Operation
Communications Communications between the MCU and HCU is delivered through the
OTR ports, in an RS-422 format. This is done to reduce noise, and to
drive up to a 100 foot cable distance. An RS-232/422 converter is
located on the Auxiliary card. Supply voltages for the OTR and current
limiting are also supplied through the Auxiliary card. If a shorted OTR
is present, a DS2 LED labeled “OTR” is illuminated. Communications
activity can be monitored by observing the TX and RX LED on DS1.

H-Bridge The H-Bridges consist of four FETs for each of the two motors. Two FETs
are activated for forward motor movement, two are activated for reverse
motor movement. Signals from the motor controllers (located on the
HCU CPU card) are passed through a gate array, which serves two pri-
mary purposes; to change the signal level, and to suppress the drive
during the power-up sequence. The H-bridges are tested once per injec-
tion by applying a low voltage (read through the A/D converter).

returned to the CPU through the A/D converter. The Z80 uses the cur-
rent to calculate resultant syringe pressure. There is a direct correla-
tion between motor current and fluid path pressure. If the motor current
indicates a pressure approaching 300 psi during an injection, or 150
psi during forward load, the speed of the motor is reduced to compen-
sate. This circuit is identical for each motor, A and B.
Overpressure / Motor current is also monitored directly by the hardware, using a com-
Overcurrent Sens- parator circuit. This is a backup to the Z80/software monitoring
ing described above. The current is compared to a preset baseline trip

Control The Master Control Unit (MCU) provides the control and coordination for
the entire Spectris MR Injector system. It is the central hub for all commu-
Unit nications between the subsystems. The MCU is the master subsystem,
with the DCU and HCU slaved to it. The other subsystems report data to
the MCU, which in turn processes the information and commands, or
authorizes the actions of the sub-systems. The MCU provides the primary
diagnostic and monitoring for the Control Room subsystems, and provides
backup monitoring for the HCU.

Power-Up
Circuitry Spectris MR system AC power is controlled on the MCU, using a com-
bination ON/Standby switch/circuit breaker. When the switch is in the
ON position, power is supplied to the DCU ON/Standby switch, and
certain circuits on the Battery Charger card. When the DCU ON/
Standby switch is pressed, power is supplied to the remaining compo-
nents through power-up relays.
A power failure signal from the logic power supply is available. When
removing power from the system, the signal “#+5VPWRDOWN” is
issued to the CPU 100ms before power is removed, allowing the CPU
to complete required operations, and save pertinent information.
Power Supply Unswitched U +24V, U +5V, U +12V, and U -12V enters the Battery
Charger board when the MCU ON/OFF switch is pressed. After pass-
ing through the power-up relays, these signals become (switched)
+24V, +5V, +12V, and -12V respectively. These voltages are used to
supply the MCU, DCU and the OTR (attached to the MCU).

Interface To interface with the Spectris MR System, an isolated +5V (ISO +5V) is
supplied. This voltage should be used to return voltage back to the
system through customer logic. This ensures that the user cannot
damage the system by applying an input voltage other than that speci-
fied. An isolated DC/DC converter supplies the ISO +5 volts to the user
for external equipment. No ground return path is available.
The ISO +5V fault in the isolated voltage circuit is sent to the MCU
microprocessor, and a fault LED lights, when there is a fault with the
DC/DC converter.

A/D Converter System voltage levels are monitored using a multiplexed serial A/D
converter. A reference +5 VDC is provided to the converter by compo-

voltage reference, which is used to check the A/D for linearity and
accuracy. The A/D uses the system clock, via a divider, to provide the
required internal timing signals. The 68332 provides the necessary
chip select.

Communication The MCU uses two UARTs to communicate with the OTRs, DCU, and
external devices.
The first UART transmits data to the DCU on channel A, and transmits
data to the OTR on channel B. The standard RS-422 driver/receiver
circuits are used to communicate with the devices. This UART also
provides general purpose input and output ports, used to control
external devices.
for the printer port. Channel A is assigned to the printer, and channel B

is unused at this time. The printer signal is fed through a two-port RS-
232 driver/receiver, and supplied by an isolated 5 VDC to reduce leak-
age and interference. The receive signals are optically coupled to the
UART. This circuit uses an isolated ground. Note that signals on chan-
nels A and B are inverted.
Both UARTs are controlled by the same dip can oscillator. The oscilla-
tor generates a frequency of 3.6864MHz. The frequency of the oscilla-
tor determines the baud rate at which information passes to other
components or external devices. The corresponding rate is 19.2 K.
