CHRYSANTHEMUM SHORT STORY

A. INTRODUCTION

Translation is an activity of expressing the meaning of the source language into the target
language. Translations has been being very important for deliver the meaning of a language
that is not a majority language, so that it can be then understood by the majority language
users in a country. Translation is one of communication language.

Translation errors are often found in daily life. Errors in translations can lead to
misunderstandings in interpreting the meaning of text or conversation. Translation errors can
also be fatal if the source language is not well conveyed into the target language. According
to Catford (1965: 50) in his book A Linguistic Theory of Translation, defining the translation
as a diversion of discourse in the source language (Bsu) with equivalent discourse in the
target language (BSa). Here, Catford emphasizes that the discourse of discourse should be
commensurate with the original discourse. Since the equivalent is a key word in the
translation process, by itself the message in the transitional discourse will be proportional to
the message in the original discourse. Conversely, if the original discourse and discourse are
not commensurate, discourse is not considered a translation. According to Corder (in
Soemarmo, 1988: 61), mistakes are systemic. This mistake can be either incorrect or
mispronounced.

There are many methods needed to translate the source language into the target language. We
can not be arbitrary in translating a text, because as the author has explained above that errors
in translation can cause miscommunication. According to Newmark (1988: 45-47) proposed a
method of translation of the based of the emphasis on the use of language-both Bsu and Bsa.
He classifies this method into eight types: word-by-word translation, literal translation,
faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation, free translation, idiomatic translation,
and communicative translation. In translating a text we can not only be transfixed in one
method, one example is a word-by-word translation, not all sentences can be translated using
the word-by-word method. Likewise with the method of literal translation, not all sentences
can be translated by the method literally. For example to translate a proverb, we will not see
the intent of the proverb in the source language if it is translated literally.
For students who do not really expert in a source language, translator machines are often a
quick alternative to translating. However, it is not surprising that if we automatically translate
something the result is not satisfactorily translated by an expert translator. Often found errors
in automatic translation, and end up with a sense of confusion when understanding a text.

The usual translation error that we often find is automatic page translation errors by Google.
This error arises because Google does not translate the text manually, aka aided by the
machine. Therefore, many translation errors resulting from translation are not in accordance
with translational rules such as using translation methods and strategies. Automatic pages
translated by google is just a 'rough' translation that sometimes the intent of the source
language into the target language has not been conveyed.

Google Translate is a service provided by Google Inc. to translate sections of text or web
pages in one language into another language. Unlike other translation services like Flitto or
HiNative which involving native people from the source language so that the translation is
more accurate, Google uses its own translation software. Google Translate, like any other
automated translation tool, has some limitations. Although it can help the reader to
understand the general content of foreign language texts, but does not provide the accurate
translation.

In the short story The Chrysanthemums that the author tried to translate automatically, it
found many errors in translation. The author often does not understand the intent of the
translation content, and it ends by read again the text in English. Difficulties in understanding
the translation is the background of the author to examine the translation arrangements made
by google.

This interesting point that encourages authors to deeply analyze the translation error made by
Google automatic page translation. In order to avoid miscommunication and
incomprehension of the source language to be discussed. An interest in justifying errors made
by automatic page translation also encourages authors to write this paper.

According with the above exposure, the author will present the issues to be discussed, among
others (1) how difficulty in understanding the text of google automatic translating The
Chtysanthemums short story; (2) whether google uses appropriate translation rules; and (3)
what is the correct form of the errors translation;
