Manitoba is committed to ensuring older Manitobans have access to programs, services and
information that enhances their health, independence and well-being. With the help of the
Seniors and Healthy Aging Secretariat, we are accomplishing this goal through The Caregiver
Recognition Act, Elder Abuse Strategy, Healthy Aging Strategy and the Age Friendly
Manitoba Initiative.
Many communities across the province have joined the Age Friendly Manitoba Initiative
and are working in partnership with government and our age-friendly partners to create
communities that are respectful, accessible and responsive to the needs of all citizens,
of all ages.
Communities that use the age-friendly concept recognize the vast and irreplaceable
contributions of older Manitobans. The age-friendly concept provides a helpful framework
when designing, planning and implementing projects that create supportive communities
for everyone. For more information on the Age Friendly Manitoba Initiative, please visit
www.manitoba.ca/shas or www.AgeFriendlyManitoba.ca.
I am grateful to the Manitoba Council on Aging (MCA) for their assistance in ensuring this
guide continues to be a valuable resource for older Manitobans and their families. The MCA
is a group of dedicated older adults who help keep me aware of what is important to older
Manitobans and provide recommendations on how we can move forward on addressing
issues. I thank the MCA for the hard work, time and effort it devotes to seniors issues.
The Manitoba Council on Aging is an advisory body to the Minister of Healthy Living and
Seniors. We ensure that the voice of older Manitobans is heard within government and that
action is taken to address issues that are important to older Manitobans. The Council on Aging
is also a strong supporter of the Age-Friendly Manitoba Initiative. The Council believes that if
we work together we can create an age-friendly province that is made up of communities that
are respectful, inclusive and supportive to people of all ages.
The Manitoba Council on Aging welcomes your feedback and suggestions regarding the
Seniors’ Guide and other seniors’ issues. Your input will ensure that we continue to produce a
guide that meets the diverse needs and interests of older Manitobans.
