Why are we here?
“The International Institute of Refrigeration estimates that improving
access to refrigeration in developing countries could prevent spoilage of
up to 23% of perishable foods.”¹

How might we build a robust, more

sustainable cold storage supply chain in
sub-Saharan Africa?

Cold storage supply chain
The cold storage supply chain (sometimes called the “cold chain”) how food is
kept cold as it moves through the supply chain from the farm, through
transportation, processing, distribution, and finally to the end consumer.

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)
The UN Development Programme defines
SSA as 46 countries that lie south of the
Sahara desert.

We are focusing on SSA for a few important

reasons:
1. 30%+ of Sub-Saharan Africans are chronically
undernourished

2. 60% of Sub-Saharan Africans are employed in

agriculture

3. SSA has the largest room for improvement in

their cold storage supply chain infrastructure

Status of cold storage in SSA
Countries across SSA have the lowest access to cold storage of any region in the
world.

Food insecurity
In 2016, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN found that over 20%
of people living in SSA suffer from chronic undernourishment– and the
region is growing rapidly.

Unnecessary resource use
As you can see, the GHG impact of food loss and waste should not be
underestimated. If it were its own country, it ranks right behind the United States
as a top-emitter.

Impact of refrigerants on
climate
In Paul Hawken’s watershed book
“Drawdown” he found that better managing
and reducing the use of refrigerants is the
number one solution that can be taken to
positively impact climate change.

Economic instability for agricultural workers
It is estimated that food loss and waste costs food producers USD $940 billion
annually worldwide.¹ In SSA, agriculture is the primary source of income for over
60% of the population.

Recap: impact of improving
the cold storage supply chain

Improving the cold storage supply chain in SSA

would reduce food loss and waste and specifically
would:

1. Improve food security

2. Reduce GHG emissions and impact on the

climate

3. Improve economic outcomes for agricultural

workers

Challenges and
opportunities in the
cold storage supply
chain in SSA

Challenge: Surplus at the market
When there is a surplus of a certain product at the market, it drives prices down
and many farmers are forced to give away or sell their products at a loss.

Challenge: gaps in the supply chain

“Cold chains are complex, integrated

systems, comprising of a series of distinct
steps…Shortcomings on any segment of the
chain can endanger the positive potential
impact of the cold chain on product shelf
life.”¹

Example: cold storage in Nigeria
This video shows how leaving produce out in the hot sun all day at a market will
cause up to 70% to go bad. Imagine how many people that food could feed if it
was kept consistently cold throughout the supply chain.

Challenge: each food has different needs
Because specific foods need different temperatures, humidity, and times in
storage, there is no “one size fits all” solution to cold storage.

Challenge: low yields

Relatively low yields of small farmers spread

across large, rural regions makes cold
storage less cost-efficient.

Challenge: cooling foods quickly after harvest
The ability to cool foods right after farming or harvesting them would
dramatically reduce food loss– but this is often out of reach of small farmers.

Additional
complications

Complication: access to
consistent, sustainable
energy sources
Many farmers experience regular energy
blackouts each day– leading them to rely on
diesel generators for continuous energy.

However, diesel is expensive for the farmer

and environmentally unsustainable

Complication: lack of access to financial capital
Smallholder farmers in SSA have a difficult time securing capital in order to build
a more robust and sustainable cold storage supply chain.

The huge variety and low volume of

agricultural products is a barrier to
lenders, who want to ensure their loan is
profitable and will be repaid.

Complication: low levels of technical education
Cold storage supply chain management is a technical skill that has to be learned
and often requires specific training.

Across SSA there is a lack of

technical education needed to
properly run and maintain cold
storage supply chains.

Complication: lots of
middlemen
In SSA, there are many people who are
involved in the agricultural supply chain.
Each one increases the likelihood of cold
storage failure.

Each faulty middleman contributes to a broken

link in the cold storage supply chain that
dysregulates temperatures and leads to food loss.

Challenge Statement
In the Food Solutions Challenge, we ask you – the next generation of thinkers,
inventors and entrepreneurs – to design collaborative, innovative ideas
addressing the question:

How might we build a robust, more

sustainable cold storage supply chain in
sub-Saharan Africa?
