Title: Harmonious

​Harmonious​ is a digital collage inspired by the surrealist works ofRené Magritte that explores
my connection with nature and how the balance of our contributions to one another aids my
prosperity and stability. The digital collage was inspired by the use of clouds and a nature-like
setting in ​Le Temps Menacant​ and L ​ a Corde Sensible​, along with to the symmetry of the
“raining” men in ​Golconda​. The use of hands as raindrops and my figure resting on the cloud
emphasizes my oneness with nature.

Vision​ is an illustration made by colored pencil and acrylic paint on illustration board inspired by
the magic realist works of Fred Stonehouse and Frida Kahlo. The self portrait conveys the
power of having multiple perspectives within society on stability and the pursuit of knowledge
through the manipulation of an otherwise normal face; a third green eye is placed on the center
of the forehead and, along with the other eyes, stares directly at the viewer, acting as the focal
point of the piece.

Title: Tunnel Vision

Tunnel Vision​ is a digital collage meant to convey society’s dependency on media to shape
character and the power it holds on us. Inspired by Antoine Geiger’s photography series titled
Sur-Fake, Tunnel Vision​ utilizes movement and the use of lighter tones in the foreground to
emphasize the connection between the individual and the television. Additionally, contrast is
created between the distortion of the face and the surrounding normal setting in order to
heighten feelings of discomfort.

Vulnerability​ explores the dangers associated with leaning towards comfort rather than taking
risks through utilizing pieces of jagged plastic that are meant to emphasize discomfort and
harm. Inspired by the works of Meret Oppenheim and Lina Molenmaar - both of which use(d)
alternative materials to assemble everyday object - the glove is displayed on a wall mount to
contrast exemplify the contrast between normality and the danger associated with the
organically shaped pieces of plastic​.

Title: Shadows

Shadows is a tryptic meant to communicate personal unsureness and instability concerning the
pressure of society prior to adulthood and the eventual expression of true emotions and
aspirations that will occur through expressing oneself in society. Inspired by the works of
Picasso and Munch, the use of cool and warm colors in addition to contrasts and small, organic
streaks of paint convey a sense of chaos in the mind and a sense of ambiguity surrounding
society and the enforcement of traditions.
Title: Entangled

Entangled is a dry point print that revolves around the concept of mental instability and stress, in
addition to self debilitation. Heavily relying on movement from the face of the distraught young
woman to the hand tangled in her hair, the hand and the hair act as a symbol of the intrusive
entanglement of thoughts and worries in one’s life. The piece also incorporates cross-hatching
(most notably in the hand and facial features) to add emphasis to the disheveled appearance of
the woman.

Title: Bronzeville Community Museum

The Bronzeville Community Museum is a two-story architectural design meant to honor the
cultural significance of African Americans in Milwaukee’s Bronzeville neighborhood in the
early-mid 20th century. Destroyed to make room for interstate highways in the late 1950s, the
Bronzeville community was best known for its African American population and 19th century
and early 20th century architecture observable in the works of Henry Koch, an architect best
known for his lavish, geometric structures.
Title: Superficial

Superficial​ is a self portrait inspired by the intricacies and symmetry of Art Nouveau and the
realistic textures and tones of the Baroque movement. Revolving around the concept of
superficial/physical beauty and how it can lead to the instability of self-confidence, emphasis is
placed on the face through pale tones and gold circle and geometric lines surrounding it.
Through the mixture solid pastel pink and yellow tones, the concept of stereotypical feminine
beauty is reinforced.

Title: Lies

​ ies​ is a colored pencil illustration exploring frustration and discontent associated with the

prevalence of European beauty standards and the inability for people of color to fully express
their identity. Inspired by Surrealism and Rene Magritte’s piece ​Georgette​, Lies incorporates a
number of seemingly mundane items surrounding a portrait of a woman in order to symbolize
and emphasize the imprint European beauty has on society through the use of a wide range of
tones and a smooth texture.

Release​ is a colored pencil illustration inspired by Surrealism and Rene Magritte’s ​The Healer
that examines the significance of racial expression in society; the piece depicts a figure
releasing a number of butterflies into the sky, acting as a symbol for growing diversity and
expression in a world governed by European beauty standards. The illustration uses a range of
tones and values to add balance and smooth textures to a composition similar to those
prevalent in the Surrealist movement.

Title: Ascend

Ascend is a block print that revolves around emotional instability that comes with achieving a
personal goal. Inspired by German Expressions - most notably in the form of film noir and 1920s
horror films - the piece relies on contrasting, jagged visuals to add a sense of unfamiliarity and
eeriness to the overall composition. The steps symbolize the confusion that is associated with
goals, while the jagged hand is a representation of the struggling process to climb the steps to
reach them.
