6 Hardware Installation procedure

6.1 Items included in package

1 x NAS 01-001 mounted in bracket

1 x CAT6 Ethernet cable
1 x External plug-in adaptor
1 x P/N 9302436 hardcopy of “DBS10903 Manual for Network Attached Storage NAS 01-001”

6.2 Connecting NAS to S-VDR/VDR

The NAS must be connected directly to the Ethernet port 2-4 on the DAU with a shielded Cat5
Ethernet-cable (STP or FTP).

The NAS must be connected directly to the DAU, and not via a network-
switch/router.

7 Parameters in the VDR configuration related to the NAS

The VDR software must be version 1.31 or newer.
The VDR will attempt to record on the NAS if “Extended External backup” is enabled

Select “Nodes” on S-VDR/VDR Configurator main menu.

Tick the “Enable extended external backup” checkbox.

The NAS IP address cannot be changed and is fixed to 10.0.0.200.

After enabling the Extended External Backup feature, the S-/VDR/VDR will connect to the NAS
and start recording data within a few minutes.

NAS retain interval (from VDR s/w 3.42):

If set to 0 the VDR will record on the NAS until it is full and then start to overwrite old data.
If set to e.g. 30 the VDR will record for 30 days (if enough space) and then start to overwrite data.

NAS interval for storing images (from VDR s/w 3.42):

The data on the NAS will in general be of same quality as the data in the capsule – however it is
possible to skip up to 3 out of 4 images in order to extend the recording time of the NAS, see
section 2.

Please also notice that only images from video input where “Save IMAGE to VDR EXTENDED
BACKUP Disks” is checked will be recorded on the NAS

8 Structure for data recorded on the NAS

All data stored by the S-VDR/VDR are located in the “vdr” share on the NAS. The data-files are
located in the “data” folder in this share.

The recorded data is split into files with a size of 640 MB. This was chosen so a file will fit on a
single CD.

Every data-file (.NAS) is a complete file with respect to playback.

The filename indicates the date, time and record number of the first data in the file.
DAyyyymmddHHMM_##########.NAS *)

(The date/time for the files on the NAS shown to the right when listing the files is not necessarily
related to the recorded data.)

The oldest data is overwritten with new data if the NAS is full.

The data-files, and system-files located in the “vdr” share are all read-only files.

*)
yyyy = Year.
mm = Month.
dd = Day of month
HH = Hour
MM = Minute
#### = Record number

9 Playback of NAS-files

9.1 Required VDR Explorer software

VDR Explore V1.12 or later is required for replaying the data recorded on the NAS.

9.2 Steps to do before playback

The NAS must be disconnected from the S-VDR/VDR and connected to an Ethernet port on a PC
with VDR Explorer installed, before data can be replayed
The PC must be configured with an IP address in the 10.0.0.x range and with subnet mask
255.255.255.0. The IP address for the replay PC cannot be 10.0.0.200 as it is used be the NAS.

9.3 Selection of file for playback

Start the VDR Explorer and in the “Connect”-dialog select “VDR Extraction”.
Click on Browse to select the file to replay.

In the “File name”-field, type:

\\10.0.0.200\vdr\data (and click [Open])
This will open the “data” folder in the “vdr” share on the NAS,.

You will be prompted for username and password. Use:

Username: vdrdata (lowercase)
Password: vdrdata (lowercase)

Selected the data-file to replay and click [Open].

The filename indicates the date, time and record number of the first data in the file.

9.5 Playback of NAS data file

The data-file is formatted like a web-extraction file. This means it includes all relevant data for
replay, and data protection.

Please consult the user manual for the VDR Explorer for more information about how to replay
data.
