Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Good Morning class!
Good Morning Sir!
So how are you today class?
We’re all good Sir.
Okay. Very Good. So you must also be good
in our classroom today for you to understand
our discussion. Before we proceed to our
discussion, let me first provide the learning
goals that you need to accomplish this day:
 solve the word equation;
 note significant events and characters
in the epic poem;
 single out worthwhile human value;
and
 engage in activities concerning the
exile of Rama.

Good morning once again. Before we formally

start for our today’s discussion, let’s first have
an activity which is entitled,
#WORDEQUATION2018
Class, word equation is like a mathematical
equation. You need to add and subtract a
letter to come up with a word. For example:

(BEA) + U + TI + FUL =?
Sir, I think the answer is beautiful.
What do you think is the answer class?

Very good! The answer is beautiful. So do

you now understand class?
Yes, Sir.
If that’s the case, let’s now begin our activity.

Equation 1.

AD + (VEIL – IL) + N + (TWO – W – O) +

PURE – P = ?
Sir, the answer is adventure.
Very good! The answer is adventure. Next
word equation.

VALAK- AK + M + (INDIA-NDIA) + (MIKI-MI)=

?
Sir, Valmiki.
Excellent! Let’s proceed with the next
equation.

INSIDE – SIDE + D+ (ASIA-AS)= ?

It’s India, Sir.
Very good!

The activity continues.

C. Presentation of the Lesson

A while back, I let you solve a word equation.

So we come up with the words like
adventure, exile, Valmiki, India, bow, queen,
etc. These words have something to do with
our discussion for today.

So class, fasten your seatbelts as we venture

the world of literature entitled The Exile of
Rama.

D. Lesson Proper
Welcome to the world of Ramayana! For the
past two thousand years, the Ramayana has
been among the most important literary and
oral texts of South Asia. So class, where do
you think was the Ramayana written? What is
the place or country?
Sir, it’s in India
Very good! Class, this epic poem provides
insights into the many aspects of Indian
culture and continues to influence the politics,
religion, and art of modern India.

So class, Ramayana is one of the two great

epics of India. The other one is the
Mahabharata. It was written by Maharshi
Valmiki who was born to a Brahmin family,
was originally known as “Ratnakar”. Through
Brahmin by caste, he became a notorious
dacoit during his younger days. So class,
what do you think is the meaning of dacoit?
Sir, it is also known as robber.
Very good! After writing the Ramayana, he
was later known as India’s greatest sage.
Sage is one distinguished for wisdom, Sir.
Well said. So, Ramayana is generally a
secular piece which included significant Vedic
materials. Class, Vedic has something to do
with Vedas, the language which they are
written. Are we clear with that class?
Yes, Sir.
Its characters are perceived as the
personification of some Hindu virtues such as
heroism, filial piety, fraternal devotion, and
fidelity. Am I understood, class?
Yes, Sir.
Okay, before we proceed to our film viewing.
Let me first provide the guide questions in
order for you to really understand the story.

 What is the attitude of the Ramayana

towards family?
 What does the epic have to say about
the ideal king and about just rule?
 With which other mythological or
religious figures would you most
closely compare Rama?
 What characters did you find to be the
most interesting? Why?

With that, I want you to be settled now and

focus on the story.

(the teacher will play the video)

(students start watching The Exile of Rama)
Okay class, since you already watched and
understand the movie. We will have an
activity which entitled, “Tell me about it”. So
here is the mechanics of the game.

Mechanics:
1. The students will tell the class one
character in the story of Ramayana
and what are the traits of this
character or the attribution of this
character in the movie.
2. Any volunteer can share his/her
insights in front of the class.
3. Every student who will recite will gain
chips depending on the quality of
his/her answer.
4. The teacher will process the answer
of the students which will serve as
their discussion.

So are you now ready, class?

Yes, Sir.
If that’s the case, let’s begin our activity. So
who want to share his/her insights? Yes,
Juliana?
Sir, my favorite character is Rama because
he was a great leader.
Yes it’s true. Thank you dear. Rama is the
hero of the Ramayana epic, an incarnation of
the God Vishnu. The eldest and favourite son
of Dasaratha, King of Ayodhya, he is a
virtuous prince and is much loved by the
people. He is exiled from Ayodhya due to the
plotting of his stepmother, Kaikeyi.

Any other? Yes, Marigona?

Sir, its Sita because she marries Rama and
loves him so much.
Yes, thank you, Marigona. Sita is Rama's wife
and daughter of King Janaka of Mithila. Sita
is the epitome of womanly purity and virtue.

For the next one? Yes, Anthony?

Sir, Ravana because he cannot be killed by a
God, demon or other divine being.
Thank you, Anthony. Ravana is the king of
Lanka and has 10 heads and 20 arms. He
received a boon from the God Brahma that
he cannot be killed by gods, demons or by
spirits, after performing a severe penance for
10,000 years. After receiving his reward from
Brahma, Ravana began to lay waste to the
earth and disturbed the deeds of the good
Hindu sages. Vishnu incarnates as the
human Rama to defeat him, assisted by an
army of monkeys and bears, thus
circumventing the boon given by Brahma.

Any other who wants to gain chips? Yes,

Angelica? Lakshmana Sir because he is deeply devoted
to his brother.

Yes, definitely. Thank you, Angelica.

Laksmana is Rama's younger brother.
Completely loyal to Rama, he chooses to go
with Rama and Sita when they are exiled
from Ayodhya.
For the next one? Yes, Pia?
Sir, King Dasaratha because he is a good
king.
Thank you, Pia. King of Ayodhya, father of
Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and
Shatrughna. Of all his three sons, he loves
Rama most deeply, and tries to shelter the
boy from any danger. He is a good king: kind,
just and well-liked by his people.

Okay. Who will be the next? Yes, Charlie?

Sir, Queen Kaikeyi because she saved the
life of Dasaratha in battle, he offered to grant
anything she would ask of him.
Very good! Kaikeyi is Dasaratha's favorite
wife and the mother of Bharatha. Though
she's a kind and generous woman at heart,
her companion Kooni encourages Kaikeyi to
behave jealously and blackmail Dasaratha
into crowning Bharatha king instead of Rama.
Kaikeyi is able to do this because she saved
Dasaratha's life years ago and he granted her
a boon in thanks, which she chose to redeem
at a later date.

Any other who wants to gain chips? Yes,

Malchus?
Sir, Sumitra because she is the mother of
Lakshmana.
Thank you, Malchus. Sumithra is the mother
of the twins Lakshmana and Sathrugna, and
one of Dasaratha's wives.

And who is the first wife of King Dasaratha?

Yes, Robert?
Sir, Kausalya.
Very good! The first wife of Dasaratha and
mother of Rama. She is the oldest wife, and
very kind and wise. She does not have a
close relationship with her husband, but she
loves her son Rama very deeply.

For the next one? Yes, Rochelle?

Shatrugna Sir. He follows his brother Bharata
everywhere.
Thank you, Rochelle. Shatrugna is the son of
King Dasaratha and Queen Sumitra. His twin
brother is Lakshmana, and his half-brothers
are Rama and Bharata. He follows his brother
Bharata everywhere.

Any other who wants to gain chips? Yes,

Malchus?
Sir, Bharata because he is so devoted to his
brother Rama.
Yes, it’s true. Bharata is the second son of
Dasaratha. When he learns that his mother
Kaikeyi had forced Rama into exile, causing
Dasaratha to die broken hearted, he storms
out of the palace and goes in search of
Rama. When Rama refuses to return from his
exile to assume the throne, Bharata obtains
Rama's sandals and places them on the
throne as a gesture that Rama is the true
king.

Okay. Who will be the next? Yes, Aladdin?

Sir, Hanuman is the wise and resourceful
monkey who helps Rama in his quest to
defeat Ravana and rescue Sita.
Yes, indeed. Advisor to Sugriva. He is the
son of the wind god Vayu and a vanari
woman. Hanuman is the wise and resourceful
monkey who helps Rama in his quest to
defeat Ravana and rescue Sita.

Okay thank you for your active participation.

E. Generalization

I know you have learned a lot from today’s

discussion. Is there anyone from the class
who can summarize our lesson?
(Students raise their hands.)
Call a student to generalize the topic.
(students’ answers vary)
Okay. Class, remember that the Ramayana is
not just a story, but also an educational
medium to demonstrate the importance of
values such as loving and respecting your
family, keeping your promises, protecting the
weak and so on.

F. Evaluation

So I want you all to remember the things we

have discussed this day. Remember all the
values you have acquired in the story. Okay
class, since you have known already the
story of Ramayana, let’s have an activity
which entitled E-Quiz 2018.

Activity: E-Quiz 2018 (Electronic Quiz)

Instruction: The teacher will divide the class
into 5 groups. The teacher will use a
powerpoint presentation and post a question (The students will do the activity.)
that will be answered in just 15 seconds. Each
question is equivalent to 3 points. The group
who has the highest score will be the winner.
Thank you for your active participation class!
God bless!
