Condition based maintenance has widely been accepted as the most effective maintenance strategy for
HV substation equipment. Through accurate knowledge of the state of condition and corresponding
maintenance action, the lifetime of assets is extended while ensuring a more reliable and safe operation
at the same time.

The disadvantage of such a strategy are the costs due to the power outages that are required in order to
perform the diagnostic measurements.

At OMICRON we counter this disadvantage. We develop solutions that combine high portability, effort
minimizing connection concepts and intelligent automated testing routines. This enables faster and easier
testing and condition assessment than ever before without compromising on the scope of results.

With diagnostic concepts that involve simultaneous time optimized testing on various HV assets the overall
outage time for diagnostic measurements is greatly reduced to only a few hours.

much this can improve your process.

Bavley Farid has worked as Application Engineer with a

focus on Partial Discharge Diagnostics and Monitoring in
OMICRON Electronics Middle east, since February 2016.

He conducts theoretical and practical training courses,

performs partial discharge measurements on HV assets
and provides technical support to customers. He received
his Bachelor’s Degree in Science in Electrical Engineering
with a focus on High Voltage Systems from the American
University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates in June 2015.
PD measurements on gas-insulated switchgear (GIS)

PD measurements on gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) PD measurements within the ultra-high frequency

range are very sensitive and have therefore been employed for PD detection in a long time. In new plants,
UHF sensors are more and more integrated – alternatively, mobile and external sensors can be used. The
combination of MPD 600 and OMICRON’s UHF 620 allows fast and easy PD measuring up to the UHF range
and provides different frequency bandwidths.

The UHF partial discharge (PD) measurement is an unconventional PD measurement technology, which
can provide customers with an improved solution for sensitive PD measurements without (or fewer)
interferences from external noise that limit the use of conventional/standard methods (IEC60270), especially
on site. The UHF technology can make PD measurement more accurate, reliable, fast and easy. UHF stands
for Ultra-High Frequency and the related PD measurement uses the frequency range of some 100’s MHz
up to about 1.5-2 GHz. This technology can be used for detection, measurement and monitoring of PD at
different assets.

GIS/GIL (Gas Insulated Substations / Lines) Application:

PD measurements using the UHF method have been performed on GIS since more than 25 years. UHF
technology is now used for the commissioning of new or maintained substations to ensure no moving parts
(hopping particles) or protrusions on the conductors, which can lead to weakened insulation properties.
To decouple PD signals out of the GIS, permanently mounted sensors are typically used. In some cases,
retrofitting of older installations (using window couplers with an individual (depends on GIS type) design or
a kinds of rubber bands with inside metallic foils for mounting at spacers (using the dialectical gap between
two nearby outer conductor tubes existing at some GIS installation) is possible. These methods are described
in IEC standards (e.g. IEC 62271-203 Chapter 6.29) or in the CIGRE (TF 15/33.03.05).

Partial Discharge Analysis and Monitoring

Partial discharge (PD) can damage insulation materials in power transformer bushings and windings. This
can lead to their failure and costly outages. PD measurement is a reliable and non-destructive method used
to diagnose the condition of a power transformer insulation system.

OMICRON's PD analysis and monitoring solutions offer:

>> Fiber optic data transmission for safe operation and improved signal-to-noise ratio
>> Simultaneous and synchronous multi-channel PD measurement for more complete analysis
>> Active noise suppression and gating methods for optimal accuracy despite high interference
>> Powerful tools (3PARD and 3FREQ) for separating noise and multiple PD sources

MPD series
The MPD 500 and MPD 600 are highly developed
devices for measuring partial discharges (PD).
Even the smallest PD pulses can be separated from
interference and analyzed. The MPD series is suitable
for many different PD testing applications.

PDL 650
The PDL 650 is used for acoustic PD fault localization
on power transformers. The software compares
the data from multiple sensors and enters it into a
geometric model. This allows the fault location to be
identified reliably.

OMS 605
The OMS 605 is a portable partial discharge
monitoring system designed to inspect high-voltage
assets under load. It can be employed for temporary
and periodic, condition-based monitoring.
