Lesson Idea Name: What is a Shape?

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 5th grade

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE5. G.4 Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on
properties (polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals).
Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Students Standard: 6. Creative Communicator Students communicate
clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats
and digital media appropriate to their goals. Students: communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by
creating or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.

Selected Technology Tool: Popplet

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: For this project students have control of the design of their popplet while working within a
group. This allows students to have control on design and how they organize the information.
Representation: If students need/want to present the information in a physical form, they can copy the
popplet from online onto a physical poster or present with physical drawings.
Action and Expression: During this project, students are going to working in their groups which allows for
students to work at their pace within a group. If one students needs more clarification on an idea, the group
can stop, think, and help that student to understand.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will have students creating a web of that helps students classify 2D figures and how they are
connected. There are three classifications of shapes that students will be looking at the definitions, pictures,
and drawings of the shapes to create this web on Popplet. The teacher will assign groups and each group will
cover and create one web for each shape. For example, one group will research and create drawings that
represent the polygons. One group will do triangles and other will do quadrilaterals. Once students are done
creating there popplet for class to see, the teacher will instruct how all the 2D figures are connected.

The project will introduce as an end of unit project to see how each group understand their shape and how to
classify shapes. The project can be extended to include all two-dimensional shapes like circles and going forth
with three-dimensional shapes as well. This lesson will conclude with the presentation of the whole popplet
together that you can see an example next to this document.

Reflective Practice:
I think that will impact students’ learning because it will provide organization and see the connections
between different types of shapes. Because of this reason this is a good end of unit project because once you
cover all these different types of 2D shapes, it might be difficult for students to see and understand how the
shapes are connected. This can be extended to include circles as well as having the formulas of how to find
area and perimeter for each shape.
