The Development of Teaching Methods

Teachers have an influential role for the students in the school. The students will
understand the learning materials depend on how the ways the teachers teach them. The
teachers will try to make the learning process in the class to be effective by using some
ways. One of them is using teaching methods. These days, many teaching methods that can
be used by the teachers. The existence of several teaching methods is caused by the change
of time. It will influence the technology development that requires the teachers to adapt it to
the teaching methods. Therefore, the development of teaching methods also will be vary from
time to time.
First is the use of teacher centered method. In the past, the teachers still use a simple
teaching method in order to make the students are able to follow the lesson well. Teacher-
centered method is done in a conventional way. This method requires the teachers to explain
the material in front of their students and conduct the learning process. The teachers become
the center of attention and have a major role in the class, so the students tend to be passive.
The students just listen to the teachers’ explanation and note the materials. This kind of
teaching methods will make the students feel bored in the class. The students’ thoughts will
not develop because they are not active in the class.
The teaching media is not yet an advanced technology. Although it is not an advanced
techonology, it does not affect the learning process in the class. The teachers will use the
teaching media that can be made instead, such as handicrafts. The teachers will ask the
students to create a handicraft that is related to the lesson and bring it into the class. Besides,
there is also a tool called Overhead Projector (OHP). Overhead Projector (OHP) is a basic
tool used to display images or text onto a screen or wall and it can be a good teaching media.
The teachers use an Overhead Projector (OHP) to explain the lesson without writing it on
the blackboard. The using of these learning medias in the past are quite effective for helping
the teacher to teach the students.
Second is the use of student centered method, which emphasizes the students to be
active students. Nowadays, the technology develops quickly and teachers should be able to
adjust it to their teaching methods. The teachers who are still using the conventional teaching
method, of course, will be left behind and the learning materials can not be delivered
optimally. The teachers no longer have to explain all the materials to the students. Now,
they prefer to use the discussion and experimentation methods. By using these methods,
teachers can know the actual skills of the students. The students will be motivated to find and
do something new by themselves. These methods make the students become more active in
collecting information and they will have better knowledges than before.
The medias in teaching-learning process also change. Almost all of the teachers and
students have and use computers and internet to help them in learning process. Some teachers
even explain a lesson by using Power Point Presentation (PPT) and videos to interest their
students. Besides, the use of student centered method also enables the students to develop
their creativity. Students can get more detailed information about the lesson from the
internet, present it to the class by using Power Point Presentation (PPT) and then discuss it
with the other students. The use of this method makes the atmosphere in the class is not
monotonous and students can understand the lessons easily. In addition, the teaching methods
that are used today are more efficient and effective than before. Students are able to learn not
only from their teachers but also from multiple sources in the internet.
Finally, the last is the possibility of the use of Blended Learning method in the future.
The technology developments that are innovated will have a big impact in the learning
process. The example is the use of Blended Learning, a method in which the teachers and
students will meet face to face via online and it can be done anytime. They can meet face to
face via online in the real time although they are in a long distance. The learning process can
be done with a discussion through interactive video. The students can download the learning
materials before starting the class via online. Although the teachers and students do not meet
face to face, they can still give the questions, answers and feedback to each other. Thus, it
will still produce an effective learning process.
In conclusion, the teaching methods will change from time to time. The change was
clearly influenced by the technology developments. Inevitably, the needs of teachers and
students for technology in the learning process is also changing. Teachers must be able to
adapt the technology developments to their teaching methods. The technology application in
teaching methods will obviously be very useful for teachers and students. However, it does
not mean the conventional method should be completely abandoned. The combination of
conventional and modern methods will make the learning process more effective. Thus, the
education world will be better with the improvement of teaching methods.
