EVENT GUIDE

EVENT LOCATION
The Town of Beaumont is situated three kilometers south of the City of Edmonton boundary and
eight kilometers east of the International Airport.
To access the S&D AquaFit Centre, turn West off of 50th Street, onto 50th Avenue. Follow this until
you get to the aquatic centre on the right side!

EVENT ITINERARY
PACKAGE PICKUP
• Wednesday June 30 5:00pm-8:00pm United Cycle (10323 78ave)
• Thursday, July 1 6:30am-7:30am S&D AquaFit Centre - Beaumont
** please note – packages will not be available prior to the times listed. Store staff do not have all the required
information to hand out race kits.

? Why do I have to arrive so early if my race/wave start isn’t for 1-2 hours ?
Easy answer – Event access! As the adult event starts at 8am, it will be very
difficult to access the facility by vehicle. The Transition area will also be
congested with athletes cycling & running. With all participants onsite before race
start, we minimize these issues.

BIKE CHECK
United cycle will be onsite race morning to assist. The quality mechanics will do a simple check to
ensure your bike is ready for competition, and make any small adjustments you may need before
the event.

RACE DETAILS
SWIM HEATS
The last sheets of this package lists all names, and heats that you will be swimming in. We are
going on a rolling start system for all athletes, thereby 4 athletes in each lane, once one has
finished, the next will start in that lane. This saves time in the pool, as well as allows a continuous
feed of athletes throughout the course. The waves listed in this package list ‘suggested’ start
times, however please be prepared and ready. Announcements will be made indicating the next
heat start in the pool (ex: Next Heat #4 make your way to the pool deck to be checked in).
You are responsible to be onsite to hear these announcements, so please pay
attention to detail while cheering on your fellow participants.
ALL athletes are required to have their bike in the racks by 7:40am. Also please remember to do
the following BEFORE the 7:45am pre-race meeting:
• Body Marking (both arms, and both legs)
• Race Package has been picked up, and race number is pinned ON the front of your shirt
• Timing Chip received (Velcro band that you wear around your ankle at all times)

RESULTS AND TIMING CHIPS

Our events use Resultscanada to produce our race results. They utilize at computer CHIP Timing
System to gather results. You wear a Velcro band with a small disk attached to it. The disk is
activated every time you cross one of the brown rubbery timing mats. This is how we know how
fast you completed each segment of the course. The chip must be worn on your left ankle – NOT A
WRIST. There will be volunteers at the Finish Line who will remove your chip for you.

Okay – once you get your chip PUT IT ON!!! You have no idea how many people lose them
between the registration area and the transition area (you will be responsible to replace the $50
chip if not returned). Please ensure that the long end of the disk is pointed down

RACE MORNING PREP

First of all, relax.

When you arrive, check with the registration area. Bike racks are not pre-assigned. First-come,
first serve.

If you haven’t picked up your package, get it now! You will get you a number, a t-shirt, and fun
stuff from the sponsors. At “Check In” you will be “body marked” (your race number will be written
on your arm and leg) and given the timing “chip”. United Cycle will be also be on-site to assist with
any last minute tune up’s and safety checks that you need done.
WAVE STARTS!
As mentioned previously, your wave starts are tentative start times as we are doing a ‘rolling
start’. As each athlete completes the swim, we will start another in their place. This will ensure
that we get everyone into-and out of the pool before the booking is over!

Please ensure you are on deck (or in the stands) well in advance of your start time. Listen to the
announcer for the next start wave. Most importantly is to ensure that you keep the transition area
clear! Don’t get in the way of athletes already racing—they won’t like it, and neither would you!
No shoes allowed on deck.

Please review the attached athlete sheets detailing your wave starts.

RACE COURSE
THE SWIM

Age Distance The swim course will take place in the S&D AquaFit Pool (25m). We will
7&under 50m start 4 athletes per lane and you will complete 20 lengths of the pool. As
8-9 100m each athlete completes their swim, we will place another swimmer in to fill
10-11 200m the empty spot. The wave starts are estimated start times. Please ensure
12-14 300m you are in the pool awaiting your start well in advance of the suggested
15+ 500m times. Swim caps are provided in your race bags.

Volunteers will be on hand to count your laps and will put a flutter-board in the water when you
have 2 lengths remaining. You will be assigned a wave # which is posted on the website &
package pick-up locations, as well as posted at the race start. Athletes are asked that if they are
feeling any trouble or difficulty during the swim portion to either raise their hand and a lifeguard will
be there to assist you within seconds.
• Always swim on the Right side of the lane. If you are going to get passed (or going to pass)
wait until the end of the lap and stay to the right...let the faster swimmer pass on your left.
• All athletes must wear the timing chip/band provided race morning.
• Ensure you start in the appropriate heat. As each athlete enters the water, we will start the
next athlete.
• Lifeguards will patrol the pool should you require assistance. Please wave your hand to
receive assistance.
• You may use any stroke that makes you comfortable, however no floatation devices can be
used.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COUNT YOUR LAPS. VOLUNTEERS WILL DO SO AS A
COURTESY, BUT CAN MAKE MISTAKES WITH THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THEY HAVE TO
COUNT FOR
THE BIKE

Age Distance The bike course consists of an out-and-back course. Please ensure that
7&under 1.5km you watch for vehicle traffic and other athletes. This is a fun race, and we
8-9 4km don't want anyone injured along the course.
10-11 4km
12-14 6km Exit transition Northbound for a loop through the new development. As you
15+ 15km pass the start point, you will turn east along 50th ave. The turnaround is
located at Wild Rose Dr. Return the same way.

Please keep in mind that the course will be open to vehicle traffic, and you are to treat this event as
any other training ride and be very road wise while on the course. While we will have volunteers
and traffic marshals at major intersections, remember you are responsible for your own safety
while out on the course. Keep your head up at all times!
Please remember to look around you while on the course to foresee any incidents that can occur.
Remember to have fun on the course, and keep safety at the utmost priority.

Kids of Steel Bike Map

THE RUN
Age Distance The run will travel from the transition area and consist of 4 full
7&under 500m laps(adult) of the 1km looped course. You will be responsible to
8-9 1km count your own laps on this run course. There will be an aid
10-11 2km station outside of the transition area with Ultima sport drink.
12-14 3km Please be sure you drink lots of fluids on the bike course, as well
15+ 4km as take advantage of the aid stations on the run course for each
lap. The weather can be unpredictable so please dress
appropriately.

The run portion exits transition (East) and goes behind the aquatic centre onto the sidewalk. A Left
turn will take you on the paved trail, followed by another Left turn onto the sidewalk next to the
roadway. This will take you back towards transition to begin your next lap. Volunteers will be on
hand to marshal the course and signage will indicate turns etc.

Please wear your race number on the front of your jersey/t-shirt (no bare chests allowed).
EMS will be patrolling the run course on mountain bikes to assist you.
THE TRANSITION
–THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE SPORT!
The area where everything takes place and in competitive events, the place where a race can be
won or lost! In our event, usually a crazy spot as many people don’t know where to find their
equipment during the event.
Please place your bike and equipment and then look around to ‘site’ your location—what are you
next to, what does your towel look like, what rack are you in, etc. When set up, leave transition
and walk towards your bike when coming from the pool.

So please remember to look around you while on the course to foresee any unfortunate incidents
that can occur. Remember to have fun on the course, and keep safety at the utmost priority.

VOLUNTEER?!

We’d love your support..and if you’re racing…….be nice to them. They got up much earlier than
you did and are here just for you!

If you or someone that will be attending the event with you would like to volunteer, please contact
our Coordinator at: c.majeau@multisportscanada.com.
