KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, PATCHOGUE COUNCIL #725

Officers From the Grand Knight’s Desk
Chaplain
S/K Fr. William Winters, For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of
OFM, Cap. mind.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Brothers,
Grand Knight
S/K John E. Terlecki Welcome to March, in like a Lion and out like lamb, so they say. The winter has been kind to us so far,
minimal snow fall and reasonable temperatures to deal with. Well let’s see what comes our way in the
Deputy Grand Knight coming weeks ahead.
S/K Joe Sheldrick I am happy to report that February was another good month for our council. Several events come to mind:
Our annual Super bowl party, a chicken dinner at our monthly social meeting, also a movie night for the
Chancellor children. While all of these events were successful, the goal is to gather our families and like-minded
S/K James Kaan Catholic friends together to enjoy one another’s friendship. A secondary purpose is to bring nonmembers
to our council hall to experience what it’s like to belong to the brotherhood called the Knights of
Financial Secretary Columbus. These are opportunities for us to grow the membership and bring new life to our order. So get
involved. Look at the upcoming posted schedule of events, plan to attend and bring friends where
S/K Robert Elliott PGK FDD appropriate. Let’s together breathe new life into #725.
Warden I am also happy to report that Patchogue #725 is sending three of our free throw basketball finalists on to
Keith Mandart the County Free Throw at St Cyril & St. Methodius in Deer Park L.I. Arrive at 9:00 am and a 9:30 start.
Knights are at work as always. Our brothers were willing and able to support our parishes during the
Treasurer month of February. We were called to help at Mt. Carmel to repair and replace ceiling tiles in the rectory
S/K Denis Boyce basement and demo a bathroom for the incoming Fr. Charles. Thanks to all who participated.

Recorder Our Brothers also dedicated time and talent on repairs at the council hall repairing the dance floor and
installing a new commode in the ladies rest room. Thanks Keith and Fuddy.
S/K Kevin Drawbridge
The Council presented a check to Fr. Henry of Mt. Carmel Church for the final boiler repairs at the Parish
Advocate center and the Rectory. That check and the check presented to Fr. Steve for the new kneelers at St.
S/K Michael Boehm Francis’s concludes the pay outs from the proceeds of the 2018 golf outing.
PGK FDD FCOB What’s in the pipe line for the month of March beside the possibility of Snow? Fat Tuesday pot luck
dinner on March 5th at 7:00 pm., bring a family specialty dish. The annual St. Pats’ theme night at the
Inside Guard races is on March 16th. Doors open 6pm. The Main Street St. Pat’s parade is at 11:30 on March 17th. We
S/K Tom Liguori are planning a Social meeting on the 18th, so bring the wives - repast to be announced. Finally we are
hosting a 1st degree on Tuesday the 19th.
Outside Guard As you know each year the Grand knight selects a Knight of year and a Family of the year. This year I am
S/K Richard Costa requesting the members input. Please send your recommendations /reasons for candidates of these
prestigious awards to either James Kaan or myself at jkaan76@gmail.com orjeterlecki@optonline.net .
Outside Guard
While we should always keep the health and well-being of our brothers and sisters in mind, let us all make
First Year Trustee an effort to call fellow members we haven’t seen or heard from for a while or pay them a visit. It will make
a difference to them and yourself as well.
S/K James Addie PGK
In closing my ninth memo from the Grand Knights desk, as always, it is my continued hope that we reach
Second Year Trustee out to the parishes we support and provide the services and people whenever and wherever we are needed.
S/K John Orlando PGK Vivat Jesus!

Ash Wednesday is March 6th and is one of the most popular and important holy days
in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and
prayer.
Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed
by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too. Ash Wednesday comes
from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the
wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made
us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words:
"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Alternatively, the priest may speak the words,
"Repent and believe in the Gospel."

Ashes also symbolize grief, in this case, grief that we have sinned and caused division from God.

Writings from the Second-century Church refer to the wearing of ashes as a sign of penance.
Priests administer ashes during Mass and all are invited to accept the ashes as a visible symbol of penance. Even
non-Christians and the excommunicated are welcome to receive the ashes. The ashes are made from blessed palm
branches, taken from the previous year's palm Sunday Mass. It is important to remember that Ash Wednesday is a
day of penitential prayer and fasting. Some faithful take the rest of the day off work and remain home. It is
generally inappropriate to dine out, to shop, or to go about in public after receiving the ashes. Feasting is highly
inappropriate. Small children, the elderly and sick are exempt from this observance.
It is not required that a person wear the ashes for the rest of the day, and they may be washed off after Mass.
However, many people keep the ashes as a reminder until the evening.
Recently, movements have developed that involve pastors distributing ashes to passersby in public places. This isn't
considered taboo, but Catholics should know this practice is distinctly Protestant. Catholics should still receive
ashes within the context of Mass. Please check your Churches Bulletin to see when Ashes are being distributed in
your Parish.

Lent is a solemn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that begins on
Ash Wednesday ( March 6th 2019) and ends approximately six weeks later, before
Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through
prayer, doing penance, mortifying the flesh, repentance of sins, almsgiving, and
self-denial.
Decide on your Lenten sacrifice. Lent is a season of solemnity and sacrifice
commemorating Jesus' exodus into the desert; our sacrifice is a reminder of the
sacrifice of self Jesus made to save us from our sins. Because of this, it is a Lenten
tradition to sacrifice something for these 40 days.
In addition to sacrificing something, include something special in your Lenten routine.
Giving up chocolate or Facebook for 40 days is great, but why not do something
positive, too, instead of just removing the negative? Resolve to be more mindful of
others' needs spend more time with your family, pray more, and forgive old grudges.
Attend Mass/Liturgy as often as possible. In addition to weekly Sunday service, it's good to go to church frequently,
especially during Lent. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday when we remember that we come from dust and to dust we shall
return. Many traditions often have an additional worship service in mid-week, and attendance at these services is a good way
to participate in Lent. The services can give extra encouragement to stay focused on the reason for making Lenten sacrifices.
Also we should all attend Reconciliation during the Easter Season.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) officially gave the upcoming
abortion film “Unplanned” an “R” rating Friday for “some disturbing/bloody images” of
aborted babies.

The Motion Picture Association of

America (MPAA) officially gave the
upcoming abortion film “Unplanned” an
“R” rating Friday for “some disturbing/
bloody images” of aborted babies .

Movies are rated R for profanity, nudity, sex or

violence. “Unplanned” contains no profanity,
nudity or sex. “Ironically, the MPAA seems to
be indirectly endorsing the pro-life position:
namely that abortion is an act of violence,”
writers and directors Cary Solomon and
Chuck Konzelman told Movieguide.

The film tells the true story of former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson who worked at a Planned Parenthood
clinic in Bryan, Texas, until 2009 when she left the organization after assisting in an ultrasound-guided abortion of a 13-week-
old unborn baby. Johnson was Planned Parenthood‟s youngest director of a clinic in the nation.
She helped over 22,000 women have abortions during her time at the clinic. Planned Parenthood named Johnson as the
employee of the year in 2008. She worked at the abortion provider for eight years before leaving the group. Johnson also had
a medication abortion before she became pro-life.
The R rating will mean that “many teenage women in this country who can legally obtain an actual abortion without parental
permission will be prohibited from going to see our film containing simulated images of abortion, without obtaining parental
permission,” Solomon and Konzelman also said, noting the double-edged sword of the rating.
A parent or guardian, however, can accompany a child younger than 17 to an R-rated film.
“We are pushing the boundaries of what has never been before on such a wide scale by showing America exactly what
abortion is — and abortion is disturbing. It‟s violent,” Johnson said in a statement.
Johnson is the founder of pro-life group And Then There Were None (ATTWN), which helps abortion workers leave the
industry. It also helps women who‟ve had abortions and are suffering. The group was founded in 2012.
Since leaving Planned Parenthood, Johnson has helped roughly 500 former abortion workers leave their jobs and find other
careers outside of the abortion industry. Seven of those workers were abortion doctors.
“No one will walk away from seeing this movie and say „I didn‟t know,‟” she added.
“Unplanned” hits theaters on March 29.
