Technical Manual – System Description 6 Protection

6 Protection

This chapter describes the protection mechanisms of the OptiX OSN 2000. It
covers the following sections:
n Equipment Level Protection
n Network Level Protection

6.1 Equipment Level Protection

The OptiX OSN 2000 provides the following equipment level protection
mechanisms:
n TPS for Tributary Boards
n 1+1 Hot Standby for the Cross-Connect and Timing Unit
n 1+1 Hot Standby for the Power Supply Unit
n Abnormality-Specific Service Protection

6.1.1 TPS for Tributary Boards

As a protection mechanism, the tributary protection switching (TPS) is intended to
protect several (a number of N) tributary processing boards through one standby
tributary processing board.
The OptiX OSN 2000 provides one 1:N (N≤5) TPS protection group. The L75S,
L12S, T75S, or T12S is used as the interface board.
When configuring TPS protection, select the protection board and the access
switching board that match the tributary board.
n If the PL1 is the working board for the TPS, select the access switching board
based on the type of relay interface. The access switching board may be the
L75S that supports the 75-ohm coaxial cable or the L12S that supports the
120-ohm twisted-pair. Select the PL1P or PT1P as the protection board. In
this case, the E1 interface board cannot be installed in slot 18.

120-ohm twisted-pair. Select the PT1P as the protection board. In this case,
the E1 interface board cannot be installed in slot 18.

& Note
Do not configure extra services for the TPS protection board.

6.1.2 1+1 Hot Standby for the Cross-Connect and Timing Unit
The cross-connect unit and the timing unit of the OptiX OSN 2000 are provided by
the cross-connect and timing board. The board employs 1+1 hot standby to protect
the cross-connect unit and the timing unit at the same time. By default, the active
board is installed in slot 7 and the standby board is installed in slot 8.
When the active cross-connect and timing board works normally, the standby board
does not perform the service cross-connection, nor provide timing for the system. It
has the same cross-connect matrix and timing settings as the active board. When the
standby board receives the abnormal information from the active board or a
switching command from the NM, it immediately acts as an active board by
changing its status to the active working mode, and generates a switching event.

6.1.3 1+1 Hot Standby for the Power Supply Unit

The OptiX OSN 2000 accesses two –48 V or two –60 V DC power supplies with
two PIU boards. The boards employ the 1+1 hot standby mode. If one board
becomes faulty, the other starts to work immediately, to ensure normal operation of
the equipment.

6.1.4 Abnormality-Specific Service Protection

Power Failure in Software Loading Process
Application programs and the data have a check function. If the software loading
process is interrupted, the basic input/output system (BIOS) will not start the
application programs or the data until they are successfully loaded.

Over-Voltage and Under-Voltage Protection

The power board has a lightning protection component to decrease the damage
caused by transient high voltage.
When the board voltage is too low, the following events occur:
n The board is automatically reset.
n The power systems cut off the active power.
The software provides mirror protection for key registers. If the register value
changes due to unstable voltage, the value can be recovered using mirror protection.

7.2.5 EVPLAN Services

The OptiX OSN 2000 supports EVPLAN services by adopting MPLS Layer 2 VPN.
The EVPLAN fulfill multipoint-to-multipoint connection of nodes and service
convergence as a virtual LAN.
Figure 7-6 shows EVPLAN services. A data frame enters a PE. The PE determines
the VC label and the tunnel label of the data frame by searching the Layer 2 MAC
address table according to the MAC addresses. The PE encapsulates the two labels
into the data frame. A label switch path (LSP) is built. When the data frame travels
out of the P at the last hop, the P strips off its VC label, searches Layer 2 MAC
address table according to the sink MAC address, and forwards the data frame to
the corresponding port.
