Asthadhyayi Sutra Index

Venetia 3/2/11

Namaste,
Does anyone know where I can find a sutra index of the Asthadhyayi. There is one in the second volume of the huge 2-
volume Asthadhyayi by Motilal Banarsidass but I am hoping to find a more portable version...
Thank you
Venetia

अ यंकरकुलो प नः ीपादः | ीपतेः पदयुगं मरणीयम् । 3/2/11

नमो नमः "वेने शया"-महोदये !

I had downloaded a 48-page list of all the sutra-s from http://sanskritdocuments.org

I am attaching the pdf-file - just 286 K. It is in a way the index. But much more than an index, because it is the complete
text !

However I am keen to have an index where sutra-s are segregated by their subjects. For example, I am keen to see all
sutra-s related to samhita (sandhi-niyama) indexed together or all sutra-s related to various types of samaasa indexed
together.

Actually, in as much as there are 4 quarters of each of the eight adhyAya-s, I am wondering what is the title of each
adhyAya and of each quarter thereof. There must have been some logic in the layout of different sutra-s into total 32
quarters. I do not know whether that logic has been deciphered.

Yours is hence a very good question ! Many thanks for raising this !

Here you can search online in the database:

http://sanskrit.sai.uni-heidelberg.de/Panini/HTML/

provided by our esteemed member Sai.surala.

If you know the Sutra, by googling with sanskrit you can exactly land in the Sutra-text available in the database in other
sites too. If you want just Index of the Ashtadhyayi of the particular edition, some member may be able to scan and
send the pages.

There is a system to be followed in understanding the rules and the design of the whole text is to facilitate the
understanding of the rules with ease of economy. The first chapter is dedicated to technical terms used in it and the
next lists out pratyaya-s and in order.

Here is the article which explains the design of the Ashtadhyayi in Vikipeadia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pāṇini#Other_works

Here is the software containing the text of the Sutra-s with translation and which can be used to generate Sandhi,
conjugation and also can be arranged in the order of subjects too according to the basic primers Laghu-siddhanta-
Kaumudi or Siddhanta-Kaumudi which arrange the Sutra-s in different topics with explanations even though they are
scattered in the original in different chapters:

http://www.taralabalu.org/panini/

Try it. It is free for downloading too.

Thank you for giving the link to sanskrit.sai.uni-heidelberg. I could use the search facility in the site using Kyoto-
Harvard system of transliteration. For example I can browse the Sutrapaatha , Dhatupaatha, Pratyaya list, etc.   But I
dont know how to google with sanskrit so that I can exactly land in the Sutra-text available in the database, as
mentioned by you in your email message. Can I input a string in Kyoto-Harward transliteration system and search for
the Sutra that would contain the said string in it?

I shall be thankful if you would kindly help

You can use Google Transliteration system online available.

http://www.google.com/transliterate/

or Baraha IME from the Baraha software full download:

http://www.baraha.com/download.htm

or stand alone application like google transliteration from this link:

http://rapidshare.com/files/109344208/Baraha_IME.zip

Just chose the language in both (gogle Transliteration chose and download and after instalation chose) Sanskrit
language and start typing in any application browser message or search engine. Typing अतो द घ य ञ you will land in the
document by googling. Try right click and search by google (in chrome browser) and you will land in the exact location
of Ashtadhyayi on the web pages of the Sutra.

Hope you will benefit with this. With regards

The Asthtadhyayi with the Translation of SC Basu is available for download in convenient parts, in addition to Kashika
vritti with commentaries, and Mahabhashya too:

http://www.wilbourhall.org/index.html#panini

The index I have attached herein is from Siddhantakaumudi with Tattvabodhini, available in the same link.

I think I can get the Balamanorama Ashtadhyayi Sutrasuchi from my library soon. The above index can be used with
Basu's Translation too. which doesn't have Index, but based on Kashika.

A plain Sutrapatha is too attached which is made available in Sanskrit Documents List link above by our esteemed
member dej.vaidya.

Hope these two will be enough for the time being.

With regards

Sunder-mahodaya very kindly created an alphabetical index of all the sutras in Word/txt and PDF which I am attaching
here in case it is of use to others in this group.
The advantage of the Roman script version of course is that it is searchable which I don't think any of the Devanagari
versions we have seen on this group - both text and image PDFs - are but correct me if I am wrong.
Thank you again to Sunder for this valuable service.
