my non-teaching time, making notes daily observations of teachers at a variety of grade levels (K-6).
of strategies they implement, and Conversations with my mentor teacher and other teachers about
incorporating the most useful ones what instructional strategies they find are consistently the most
into my own practice. effective will help me reflect on my own practice, and incorporate
new strategies into my instruction.
2. Reading professional literature. 2. January 7th-April 18th 2. The textbooks “The Strategic Teacher” by Harvey Silver, and
“Design and Deliver” by Loui Lord Nelson are both excellent
resources for developing a deeper understanding of lesson planning.
Silver’s textbook is focused on specific strategies to design lessons
around, while Nelson’s is focused on implementing a universal
design for learning approach in the classroom. I am quite familiar
with both textbooks and know they contain valuable information.
a) What will successful completion of my goal look like for my professional practice? For student learning?
My professional practice will become more focused and effective as I learn and incorporate new instructional strategies into my
daily teaching. Over time, I can assess how well strategies I learn fit into the different subjects I teach. My daily, weekly, and unit
reflections will help me gauge how well I have incorporated a wide variety of strategies into my instruction. The Google Slides
presentation I make will be a resource I can add to and reference throughout my career.
For student learning, successful completion of this goal will be indicated by increased engagement in the classroom. Students get
bored of the same strategies repeated over and over again (although there is a time and place for this). Providing a range of effective
lesson planning strategies should naturally lead to greater student engagement.
