will be no RE meal that evening. This will be the First
Reconciliation for the Sacramental Class!! The pen-
ance service replaces the RE class.

Starting March 12th we will be discussing the book
“Rediscover Jesus”. This book was given out by the K
of C a couple years ago. If you don’t have a book, there
will be some available to purchase.
Chapters will need to be read ahead
of time and the discussion will be on
the questions at the end of each
chapter.

What is Lent?
Lent is the forty-day liturgical season of fasting (penance), spe-
cial prayer and almsgiving in preparation for Easter.
What is Fasting and Abstinence? On days of abstinence no
meat can be eaten. Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays during
Lent are Days of Abstinence. On Days of Fasting, only one full
meal is permitted on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for Catho-
lics between 18-59. Two smaller meals are permitted, but the
small meals should not equal a second full meal. Drinking coffee,
tea and water between meals is allowed. Snacks between meals
are not allowed.
Giving up something for Lent fosters self-discipline and tempers
our desires. It is a form of fasting and a form of penance. It pro-
motes spiritual growth.
Lenten Prayers and Devotions: Start each morning with prayer.
Attend Daily Mass if possible; pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of
the Rosary; Make the Stations of the Cross; read scripture 10
minutes every day. We can spend some time in quiet prayer be-
fore the Blessed Sacrament, abstain from meat for an extra day
each week or keep a Lenten journal with your spiritual insights,
special intentions etc. Just by adding 1 of these to your day, you
will be promoting spiritual growth.
What almsgiving really means: Almsgiving has always been an
important part of Lent. For some, it means giving money to Cath-
olic charities or some other good cause. The concept of almsgiv-
ing goes even deeper. It is our response to the teachings of Jesus
that encourage us to reach out to people in need, not just with our
money, but with our time and our talents.
Lent gives us the opportunity to cultivate a spirit of generosity. It
gives us a chance to share what we have and who we are with oth-
er people. It puts us in communion with others and helps us un-
derstand that we are all members of the Body of Christ.
