REPORT ON SOIL INVESTIGATION WORK FOR PROPOSED

BOYS' HOSTEL BUILDINGS AT KIET COLLEGE ,
MURADNAGAR , DISTT. GHAZIABAD ( U. P. ).

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 PROJECT

This soil investigation work , whose results

are being presented herewith , has been
carried out for the BOYS' HOSTEL buildings
being proposed to be constructed by the
project authorities at their site situated at
KIET COLLEGE , MURADNAGAR , DISTT. GHAZIABAD.

1.2 AIM OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Soil investigation has been conducted at the

site in order to evaluate the parameters
required for design of foundations. These
parameters are :

(a) Type of foundation on which the proposed

super structure will be supported.

(b) Depth of foundation , and

(c) Allowable bearing pressure at the found-

ing level.
11577 2

To evaluate these parameters, following

engineering properties of the sub-soil have
been studied :

(a) Sub-soil penetration resistance character-

istics which have been determined insitu.

(b) Properties like particle size distribution,

atterberg limits , bulk density , moisture
content , dry density and shear strength
parameters ; which have been determined
in the laboratory by conducting testing
of both disturbed as well as undisturbed
samples.

1.3 SCOPE OF WORK

The stipulated scope of work comprised of

the following:

a) Mobilisation of equipment and personnel to

the site and back.

b) Sinking 2 no. boreholes in the subsoil down

to 15 m depth or refusal whichever is
encountered earlier , conducting required
field and laboratory tests and their
analysis.

c) Preparation and submission of technical

report.

2. INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED

2.1 INSITU TESTS

Locations of field testing points have been

marked at the site as per the layout plan
issued by project architects for this purposes.
These locations have been designated as BH 1
and BH 2 in this report.
11577 3

2.1.1 BOREHOLES

Following operations have been carried out

during the progress of boreholes :

(a) Augering with the help of shell and auger

technique down to 15 m depth below the
starting points' levels in the two
boreholes.

(b) Standard penetration tests at regular

intervals.

(c) Collection of disturbed and undisturbed

soil samples from various levels of the
sub-soil strata.

Two boreholes have been terminated at 15 m

depth below the existing ground level.

2.1.1.1 WATER TABLE

Water table was encountered at following depths

below the existing ground level in the two
boreholes :

Borehole no. Water table depth

below G.L. ( m )
----------------------------------------
1 10.0
2 10.3
----------------------------------------

This water table is liable to rise upto a

depth of about 8.5 m below G.L. during
heavy rainy seasons.

2.1.1.2 FILLED UP SOIL

Filled up soil was encountered down to

1.0 m depth at the top in the two boreholes.
11577 4

2.1.1.3 STANDARD PENETRATION TEST RESULTS

Following standard penetration resistance

(`N') values have been recorded at various
depths in the two boreholes :

3. OBSERVATIONS

Following points are observed from results

obtained :

(a) Grain size distribution curves plotted

from sieve and hydrometer analysis
indicate that the sub-soil strata in this
site comprises of silt-sand mixture with
or without gravels. Clay particles were
encountered to a small extent at some
levels.

(b) Bulk density values vary from

1.71 to 1.76 gms./cc. whereas dry density
values vary from 1.60 to 1.63 gms./cc. in
the two boreholes.

(c) Average value of cohesion is 0.08 kg./

sq. cm. whereas angle of shearing
resistance values average to 23 degrees.

4. DISCUSSIONS

For designing the foundation system,

the following parameters are required :

(a) Suitable type of foundation on which the

proposed super-structure can be supported.

(b) Depth of these foundations, and

(c) Allowable bearing pressure at the founding

level corresponding to various footing
sizes.
11577 9

4.1 TYPE OF FOUNDATION

Type of foundation to be adopted for a particular

structure depends upon the loading intensity at
the foundation level and the configuration of
loading points.

Considering the anticipated loads, proposed

project buildings can be supported over
square isolated foundations.

4.2 DEPTH OF FOUNDATION

Foundations for the proposed structures will be

placed at a depth of 200 cms. below the existing
ground level OR 100 cms. within virgin soil
whichever is deeper.

4.3 ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE

Following criteria have been adopted for evalution

of allowable bearing pressure values :

1. Settlement criterion
2. Shear strength criterion

Shear failure condition as per I.S. 6403 has

been considered for deducing shear strength value.

Allowable settlement value of 50 mm has been

been considered for allowable bearing pressure
computation.
11577 10

5. SAMPLE CALCULATIONS

Type of foundation : Square Isolated

Depth of foundation : 200 cms. below the existing

ground level.

Width of foundation : 200 cms.

I. SETTLEMENT CRITERIA FROM `N' VALUES

Weighted average `N' value = 10

Refering to I.S.8009 Part I,

Settlement per unit pressure
( kg./sq.cm. ) corresponding
to above `N' value = 32.00 mm

Considering water table correction ,

Settlement per unit pressure

( kg./sq.cm. ) = 42.66 mm

Considering depth factor as per Clause 9.5.1 ,

Settlement per unit pressure

( kg./sq.cm. ) = 33.06 mm

Allowable settlement = 50 mm

Net allowable bearing

pressure = 1.51 kg./sq.cm.
11577 11

II. SHEAR FAILURE CRITERION

Cohesion , c = 0.08 Kg/sq.cm.

Angle of shearing resistance , O = 23 degrees

Bearing capacity factors

GSF :
Nc = 18.36 , Nq = 8.96 , Nr = 8.68

LSF :
Nc = 11.68 , Nq = 4.37 , Nr = 3.13

Overburden density , r = 1.50 gms./cc.

Shear strength (GSF), Q(GSF) = 2.22 kg./sq.cm.

Shear strength (LSF), Q(LSF) = 0.92 kg./sq.cm.

Shear Strength (Intermediate)= 1.57 kg./sq.cm.

III. RECOMMENDATIONS

ADOPT , Qnet = 1.51 kg./sq.cm.

say 1.50 kg./sq.cm.

Similiar analysis has been conducted for various

foundation sizes at the recommended founding level.

Based upon the same , the recommendations are being

provided as follows :
11577 12

6. RECOMMENDATIONS

I. Type of foundation : Square Isolated

II. Depth of foundation : 200 cms. below the

existing ground level
OR 100 cms. within
virgin soil whichever
is deeper.

III. Allowable Bearing Pressure

A net allowable bearing pressure value of

1.50 kg. / sq. cm. can be adopted
corresponding to all foundation widths at
above recommended depth.

NOTES :

In case , it is desirable to have

design parameters at any levels other than
recommended in this report , the case may
be referred back to the consultants for
analysis.
