UNIT TITLE Crazy Hair Zentangle


GRADE LEVEL 6th Grade
DURATION 45 Minutes, 2 days

SAMPLE

Students will look at two different artist and point out aspects of their art
including background patterns and how backgrounds connect with portraits in
their work. Then we will go over what the Zentangle method is and the history
behind it incorporating meditation. Students will go through different

magazines and find a portrait of a person or and animal to use for their work
or draw it to start. They will draw hair like lines from their image to the edge of
the paper and use pencils and sharpies to draw patterns threw the lines.
Students will utilize the website tanglepatterens.com to find ideas. Finally,
when done students will fill out a reflection sheet on their process.
5PE 1PE Link ideas in and design of works of art to the emotions and moods
expressed in them.
STANDARD(S) 5RE Combine the elements and principles of art and design to create visually
effective compositions in original works of art.
1RE Identify questions that contribute to the design and meaning of their
artworks and the works of others.
Students will learn about the technique of zentangle and link it to emotions
and mood in meditational practices.
OBJECTIVE(S) Students will use the principles of art line, pattern, and shape to create original
works of art using the zentangle method.
Students will identify emotions and meaningful connections to this art method
and identify the struggles that came out of it.
Vocabulary:
Zentangle: A method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is
relaxing, and it increases focus and creativity.
Portrait: a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, especially
ACADEMIC one depicting only the face or head and shoulders.
LANGUAGE Meditation: Engaging in mental exercise such as concentration on one's
breathing or repetition of a mantra for the purpose of reaching a heightened
level of spiritual awareness.
Pattern: a repeated decorative design.

RESOURCES 9 by 6 White Construction Paper, Sharpie (24), Fine Point Sharpie (24),
MATERIALS Magazines (mixed brands), Pencils (24), Erasers (24), scissors (24), Glue Sticks

Students will fill out a self-reflection sheet answering how they felt as they
ASSESSMENT worked on their Zentangle projects to see if it was as peaceful as it is supposed
to be and for this age group. They will also answer what was the hardest part
for their project to complete and why.
Student will put their names on all artworks if they have not already and put
them in their class bin. They will put all pencils and erasers back on the
CLEAN UP material table. They will put all sharpies in their correct bin throw any trash or
scraps from their tables and/or floor. They will turn in their reflection sheet
when completed and they will return to their seats quietly and wait to be
called to line up.
