Had better
Afirmative Negative
a. We use “had better” to give advice about the present or future. Usiamo had
better per dare consigli al presente o al futuro.
You'd better tell her everything. Faresti meglio a (sarebbe meglio) dirle tutto.
You’re exceeding the speed limit. You’d better slow down.
Stai superando i limiti di velocità. Faresti meglio a (sarebbe meglio) rallentare.
b. The negative form is “had better not”. Fai attenzione alla forma negativa:
Grannie is having a nap. You’d better not disturb her.
La nonna sta schiacciando un pisolino. Sarebbe meglio non disturbarla.
You'd better not say anything. Sarebbe meglio che tu non dicessi niente.
c. We use “had better” to give advice about specific situations, not general ones. If
you want to talk about general situations, you must use “should”. However, when we
use “had better” there is a suggestion that if the advice is not followed something bad
will happen. Usiamo had better per dare consigli su situazioni specifiche, non
generali. Se parliamo di situazioni generali, dobbiamo usare should. Comunque
quando usiamo had better c’è il suggerimento che se il consiglio non viene seguito
potrebbe succedere qualcosa spiacevole.
Need
Need is a regular verb expressing the necessity or the absence of necessity in doing
something. Need è un verbo regolare che esprime la necessità o assenza di necessità
nel fare qualcosa.
I need to clean my room. Devo pulire la mia stanza.
Do you need any help? Ti serve aiuto?

a. In the present negative form need may also be a modal verb, therefore we could
have the possibility to build the sentence in two different way. Alla forma negativa del
presente need può anche agire da verbo modale e dunque avremmo la possibilità di
costruire la frase in due modi diversi:

b. To point out absence of necessity in the past need present two different
structures: Per indicare assenza di necessità in passato need presenta due diversi tipi
di costruzioni:
1. Watch out. It wasn’t necessary to do something and it wasn’t done. Non era
necessario fare una determinata cosa e non si è fatta.
2. Watch out. It wasn’t necessary to do something, but it was done. Non era
necessario fare una determinata cosa, però si è fatta.

To be
To be (in present simple and past simple) + infinitive could have the meaning of
“dovere” in the following cases: Il verbo to be + infinitive può assumere il
significato di dovere nei seguenti casi:
a. to express a planned action. Per esprimere un’azione programmata:
The meeting was to start at ten. La riunione doveva cominciare alle 10.
To be supposed to
To be supposed to + infinitive refers to the present and to the past. It is used
when we are supposed to do or not to do something according to a habit or some
rules.
To be supposed to + infinitive con riferimento al presente o al passato viene usato
quando ci si aspetta di dover o non dover fare qualcosa secondo una consuetudine o
una regola.
Steven was supposed to phone me, but he didn’t.
Steven doveva chiarmi ma non l’ha fatto.
We are supposed not to talk in the classroom.
Non dobbiamo parlare in classe.
To owe
It’s a regular verb, it means “essere debitore”. E’ un verbo regolare e significa“essere
debitore”.
I owe my brother 59$. Devo 59$ a mio fratello.
I owe you an apologize. Ti devo delle scuse.
I owe you a favour. Ti devo un favore.
To be expected to

To be expected to expresses:
a. an obligation which doesn’t depend on the speaker’s will; un obbligo che non
dipende dalla volontà di chi parla:
You are expected to pass the exam. Devi passare (ci si aspetta che tu superi)
l’esame.
