July / August 2016 Supplementary Examination

Course: SIMULATION MODELING & ANALYSIS Duration: 3 Hours

Course Code: 10IE6DCSMA Max Marks: 100
Date: 28.07.2016

Instructions: Answer FIVE FULL questions, choosing one from each unit.
UNIT -1
1. a) What is simulation? List four advantages and disadvantages of simulation. 10
b) Explain the steps involved in a simulation study with a flow chart. 10
OR
2 a) Explain the simulation of Queuing system. 10
b) A Baker is trying to determine how many dozens of bagels to bake each day. The
probability distribution of the number of bagel customers is as follows:

Number of
8 10 12 14
customers/day
Probability 0.35 0.30 0.25 0.10
Customers order 1, 2, 3 and 4 dozens according to the following probability
distribution.
Number of dozens
1 2 3 4
ordered/customer
Probability 0.4 0.30 0.20 0.10
Bagels sell for Rs6 per dozen. They cost Rs4 per dozen to make. All bagels not sold at
the end of the day are sold at half price to a local grocery store. Based on 5days of
simulation, how many dozens (to the nearest 10dozen) bagels should be baked each
day.
Random number for Number of customers/day ; 91, 72, 15, 48, 30
Random number for Number of dozens ordered/customer : 84, 10, 74, 53, 17 10
UNIT-2
3. a) Define the following with examples: 08
i. List processing ii. Event notice iii. Activity iv. Delay
b) Compare Fixed time – step simulation and Next event simulation with flow charts 06
c) Generate random numbers based on the linear congruential method using the 06
following initial values a = 9, c = 47, X0 = 21 and m = 100
OR
4. a) Consider the following numbers: 0.44, 0.18, 0.50, 0.41 and 0.39. Conduct a test for 10
uniformity, assume level of significance = 10% and also plot F(x) and SN(x) curves

b) Based on the Runs above and below the mean, determine whether the following 10
sequence of 40 numbers is such that the hypothesis of independence can be rejected
where α = 10%
0.14 0.86 0.98 0.49 0.74 0.19 0.55 0.62 0.36 0.27
0.91 0.27 0.57 0.80 0.54 0.20 0.01 0.36 0.16 0.28
0.81 0.10 0.59 0.96 0.81 0.47 0.23 0.32 0.82 0.53
0.13 0.24 0.37 0.40 0.38 0.45 0.13 0.57 0.63 0.29

UNIT-3
5. a) Develop a random variate generator for triangular distribution with range (2, 6) and 10
mode at 3. Generate 4 values of random variates. Use R = 0.36, 0.18, 0.59,0.73, 0.89
b) What is acceptance – rejection technique? Assuming suitable random numbers apply 10
the acceptance rejection technique for generating random variates with poisson
distribution with mean=1.2.

UNIT-4
6. a) Records pertaining to the monthly number of job-related injuries at an underground 10
coal mine were being studied by a federal agency. The values for the past 100 months
were as follows:

Injuries per Month 0 1 2 3 4 5 6

Frequency of Occurrence 35 40 13 6 4 1 1

(i) Apply the chi-square test to these data to test the hypothesis that the
underlying distribution is Poisson. Use the level of significance  = 0.05.
(ii) Apply the chi-square test to these data to test the hypothesis that the
distribution is Poisson with mean 1.0. Again let  = 0.05. ·
(iii) What are the differences between parts (i) and (ii), and when might each case
arise?
b) Justify as to why the uniform, triangular and Beta distributions are used as a candidate 05
distributions when data are not available. Give the significance of break points.
c) Write a note on the Iterative process of calibrating a model, and also represent 05
diagrammatically the calibration stages.
UNIT-5
7. a) Explain the following with examples: 09
i) Terminating simulation
ii) Steady state simulation
iii) Stochastic nature of output data

b) Explain the importance of Object oriented programming in simulation and also list 06
any three Pros and Cons of Object oriented simulation
c) Explain salient features of Arena Simulation software 05
