"ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND SUSTAINABLE

DEVELOPMENT: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES"

19TH JANUARY, 2019

VENUE: MOOT COURT HALL, CHANAKYA NATIONAL
LAW UNIVERSITY (9:30 AM TO 5:30 PM)
THEME OF THE SEMINAR
The healthy environment determines the quality of life. Clean environment helps in enriching the
quality of life and maintain biodiversity.  In the past few decades’ awareness of the damaging
effects of environmental pollution on human beings and their quality of life has increased
dramatically.  In the hustle-bustle of life, man has almost forgotten nature and has become more
and more modernized with the aid of latest scientific and technological developments.

Over exploitation of Earth’s natural resources and environment pollution are currently the
essential reasons of environment degradation. However, the development of science &
technology, accelerated economic growth with high consumption level in developed countries
and aspirations of developing countries to match levels of growth are continuing to damage our
Planet Earth's environment. India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world and will
continue its rapid urbanization and economic development in the coming decades. This is a cause
for celebration, but this growth also presents challenges in the form of rising consumption and
demand for energy, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and constraints on critical natural
resources such as land, water and biodiversity harbored by them. Since long a course of action
plan was resolved in Rio-declaration to improve environmental degradation, to reduce the loss of
biodiversity and emission of greenhouse gases and to go ahead towards sustainable development.
Still we have not succeeded much in this direction. India needs to find a way to ensure
environmental sustainability without compromising its economic and social development. To
address growing environmental challenges, a new development paradigm is needed that puts
people at the center of development, regards economic growth as a means and not an end,
protects the life opportunities of future generations as well as the present generations and
respects the natural systems on which all life depends.
