Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade & Festival Announces City of Philadelphia as
Official Event Partner
The Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade and Festival announces its
official partnership with the City of Philadelphia for its 4th annual parade
taking place on Saturday, June 22, 2019.
“The City is proud to partner with the Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade
and Festival” stated Mayor Kenney. “Juneteenth is an event that has a
unique cultural and historical significance, both here in Philadelphia and
across the country. We’re really excited that the new parade route will
take place in the heart of West Philadelphia. Philadelphia has long been
known as a city of neighborhoods, so it’s only appropriate that the parade
takes place in one of our most vibrant and diverse communities. I hope
that residents from all parts of the city will come out and enjoy this
year’s Juneteenth festivities.”
Dating back to June 19, 1865, Juneteenth is the oldest celebration
commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. The
Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade and Festival, produced by the
Pennsylvania Juneteenth Initiative, is held annually and attended by
thousands. The event joins people together to embrace African and
African-American culture and history, and continue the tradition of
higher education, self-empowerment and self-determination. On
Saturday, June 22, 2019, the Fourth Annual Philadelphia Juneteenth
Parade and Festival will commence at 52nd and Parkside Avenue, move
south on 52nd Street and end with a festival at Malcolm X Park (52nd
and Pine Streets), where the official renaming ceremony of 52nd Street to
“Muhammad Ali Way” will take place.
Michael Rashid has been recently appointed Chief Executive Officer
of the Pennsylvania Juneteenth Initiative. Mr. Rashid, an executive with
the Centene Corporation (owner of PA Health and Wellness), and former
CEO of Amerihealth Caritas, stated “We are excited to bring the
Juneteenth celebration back for its 4th year and, this time, back to the
community.” In previous years, the parade route has traveled through the
historic district of Center City. “Bringing the parade to 52nd Street, a
place where historically African-American businesses have thrived, was
an important change we had to make to increase attendance and
economically benefit community based businesses.”

Hassan Charles is Executive Director of Year Up Greater Philadelphia
New Community College Partner in Wilmington
Hassan Charles is Executive Director of Year Up Greater
Philadelphia (YUGP), With decades of experience in the corporate,
education and public service sectors, Mr. Charles most recently served as
Executive Director of Partnerships, Communications and Community
Engagement at Baltimore City Public Schools. Last summer he
welcomed YUGP’s new class of students at Orientation Week in
Philadelphia and Wilmington, including a cohort of 40 students at
Wilmington University’s New Castle campus.
“Hassan’s entrepreneurial drive and deep personal commitment to our
mission will ensure that Year Up Greater Philadelphia continues to grow
through new corporate and college partnerships,” said Garrett Moran,
Year Up President. “With strong roots in both Wilmington and in

Earlier in his career, Mr. Charles served in a variety of management
roles at MBNA and Wachovia, and then went on to co-found Urban
Insights, which became the region’s top multicultural marketing agency

YUGP provides free job training to talented and motivated youth, ages
18-24, at sites in Peirce College and a new location at Wilmington

Philly’s “Get Your Rear in Gear” marks 11 years
fighting colon cancer Sunday, March 24, 2019
4-mile Timed Run, Jefferson 2-Mile Remembrance Walk, Kids Fun Run
for colon cancer attracts more than 4,000, including dozens of teams to
fight colon cancer
March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, colon
cancer kills close to 45,000 Americans. Remarkably, as the second largest
cancer killer, the disease is preventable with early screenings and
treatable if caught in the early stages. Philly region’s premiere event will
mark its 11th annual event on Sunday, March 24, 2019, during National
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month at Memorial Hall in Fairmount
Park. Special preview Runway for the Cure Fashion Show on March 21
with victorious colon cancer survivor/models. Since inception, Get Your
Rear in Gear Philadelphia has raised $2.5 million for awareness,
education, outreach programs, research and patient care.
The Greater Philadelphia Region will host its 11th annual Get Your
Rear In Gear Philadelphia on Sunday, March 24, 2019. The event returns
with its signature 4-mile Timed Run, Jefferson 2-Mile Remembrance
Walk and Kids Fun Run to Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park, 4231
Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia.
Get Your Rear in Gear Philadelphia was created by Mount Laurel, NJ
resident Maria Grasso, who lost her father and grandfather to colon
cancer. Inspired by a desire to fight the disease that claimed her loved
ones, Grasso has grown the event from a few hundred participants to
more than 4,000 at last year’s event. This annual event is part of
awareness and fund-raising efforts during March, National Colorectal
Cancer Awareness Month. Survivors, patients and those lost to colorectal
cancer are honored.
“Growing this event has been my passion. I started it because I
needed to do something that would take my mind off of the pain of losing
my grandfather and then my father to colon cancer,” says Grasso.
“Even though it was for personal reasons that I wanted to do
something to hit back at the cancer that took my loved ones, I quickly
learned that others were in similar pain. Colon cancer was touching more
families than I ever imagined, over 150,000 each year.”

all of which stays in the Philadelphia region for research, patient care,
education, screenings and awareness efforts. Event partners include

The provocative new play by Philadelphia playwright Kash Goins is
directed by Broadway’s Amina Robinson.
The Arden Theatre Company kicks off 2019 with a play that could be
ripped from today’s headlines. A jury of 6 has been deadlocked for over
a week, struggling to decide what is “justifiable homicide.” The drama
that unfolds is Kash Goins’ 74 SECONDS...TO JUDGMENT. The play
runs at the Arcadia Stage from January 17 to March 3, 2019.
“I first saw Kash Goins' 74 SECONDS...TO JUDGMENT when his
company premiered it as part of their residency here at the Arden last
year. This is an exciting, surprising and timely new play, and I knew
immediately that it needed to be seen by as many people as possible,”
said Artistic Director Terrence Nolen. “We're honored to be supporting

Proceeds from the event will help raise awareness and funds for
colon cancer. Event registration is $30 (until March 17) and $35 (after

17, on site). Awards will be given for the top overall male, female and
survivor run finishers, multiple age categories, and to the Largest
Registered Team, the Top Fundraising Team and the Top Fundraising
Individual. The annual Maude Daniels and Guardian Angels Awards will
be presented at the awards ceremony, named after New Jersey resident
Maude Daniels who succumbed to colon cancer in 2011, honoring a
survivor and/or advocate and caregiver. In addition to the 4-Mile Timed
Run, the Get Your Rear in Gear Philadelphia event will feature the Kids
Fun Run and these participants will receive special medals. Special Kids
Pavilion and Survivorship and Education Tent will be located at event
site. Race packet pick up: Friday, March 22, 12 noon – 7 pm at Philly

for the political energy of 2020. But this year’s National Action Network

2019. From April 3-6 in New York City, we will call upon national, local
and community leaders to join us in a conversation about the state of
civil rights in America.
As we mark 400 years since the first slaves arrived in Jamestown,
Virginia, we will take a step back from the current moment to review

the Winter blues. Jazz vocalist & musicians collective DivaNation
PHILLY and the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts join
to present stellar Jazz vocalists alongside Baltimore-based multi-instru-
mentalist Warren Wolf and the “Wolf Pack Combo” in two shows on
Saturday, March 9th at 7pm and 9:30pm.
WARREN WOLF. Wolf has earned an A-list track record recording
and performing vibes, keys, and percussion with household names such
as Christian McBride, John Scofield and Tia Fuller. Sherry Wilson
Butler, began her career with Teddy Pendergrass, and the 10 additional
DivaNation singers have storied careers spanning several continents.

Philadelphia Council of Clergy To Install First Woman Presiding Bishop
March 16th During Women’s History Month
The Philadelphia Council of Clergy will make history on Saturday,
March 16, 2019 at 12 noon when they Install their first woman Presiding
Prelate , Bishop Mary Floyd Palmer, Founding Pastor of The Samaritan
Temple. The event will take place at Bright Hope Baptist Church located
at 1601 N. 12th Street, (12th and Cecil B. Moore Avenue). Archbishop
Anthony Floyd, Sr., Founding CEO and Presiding Bishop of The
Philadelphia Council of Clergy, Inc. stated,” I am pleased to announce
that this historic occasion will happen during Women’s History Month.
Bishop Mary Floyd Palmer is well trained, well prepared and more than
ready to pick up the torch I am handing her. I am also proud to say that
she is my brother’s daughter and my niece. Some of us in the family
knew many years ago that Bishop Mary had a special calling on her life
and I believe everything that she has done has led her to this moment in
time. I did what God told me to do and I could not be any happier.”
The Philadelphia Council of Clergy, Inc. is a non-profit organization
founded in 1994. This is an ecumenical group of multi-cultural
faith-based leaders who desire is to alleviate suffering, overcome
oppression, foster justice and peace, not only in Philadelphia citywide,
but all communities where we work and live, having impacted over
600,00 people locally, nationally and internationally. As religious
leaders, our network promotes a unified relationship with our
government officials and the social and economic advancement of our
pastors and their members.
Participating at the Installation Service will be Archbishop David
Hartman, the Chief Celebrant, representing the North American Bishop’s
Congress, Archbishop Albert N. Jarmon, Sr., Homilist/Celebrant,
representing New Day Inter-Faith Fellowship, and of course, Archbishop
Anthony Floyd, Sr. as his first step to retirement as the Emeritus Chief
Presiding Bishop.
The eldest daughter of Rev. Dr. Melvin Floyd, the Urban Missionary
known as the “Dean of Evangelism” and notably admired for his unique
van with the coffin affixed on top, Bishop Mary Floyd Palmer is
affectionately called “Bishop Mary”. A family woman who is the mother
of 3 sons & 1 daughter and the grandmother of seven, her family mantle
was Serving the Lord in Church, beginning at the tender age of 3. She’s
always been dedicated to any church assignment, from the pulpit to the
door---by giving her time, talent and tithes. As a vocalist and musician
playing four instruments, she faithfully served with her Father at Agape
Christian Chapel under his pastorate as Minister of Music for 25 years.
A proud Philadelphian, educated in both the Christian and public school
systems, she graduated Suma Cum Laude at the acclaimed Philadelphia
High School For Girls. Her thirst for knowledge finally led to her earned
Doctorate in Ministry.
In May 2006, she entered full-time ministry as a Motivational
Speaker sharing common sense principles on work-related and private
relationships and as an Evangelist sharing the Word of God in a direct,
practical and no-nonsense manner. Passionate about prison ministries,
she presently serves as a Volunteer Instructor teaching her weekly Reality
Life Skills Classes for male inmates at SCI-Chester from its inception in
1988 until present. This does not stop her from ministering federal, state
and county prisons, half-way houses & homeless shelters, the Bowery
Mission and Walter Hoving Home (New York), numerous nursing homes
and youth centers all along the East Coast. Bishop
Mary has become Confidant and Counselor to
Pastors, their wives and Episcopal leaders from all
across the country--only continuing the wisdom
mantle that her Father taught and trained her for.
Along with a myriad of responsibilities, she
hosts the weekly award-winning, "The Bishop
Mary Show", (formerly on WURD Radio), now
on SPIRITUAL CONNECT RADIO! Bishop Mary
(spiritualconnectradio.com). Her show is Floyd Palmer
designed to be real and relevant to the listening audience which spans
both nationally and internationally.
In July 2009, after intensive training and preparation, Bishop Mary
was ordained and consecrated to the Episcopal Office of Bishop in
Atlanta Georgia and fulfills the myriad of requirements to which her
office demands. Her local Affirmation service occurred in April 2010
where family and friends witnessed her elevation including her loving
Pastor/Father. In May 2011, Bishop Mary was selected by the
Philadelphia Chapter of the National Congress of Black Women to
receive their prestigious "Women of the Year in Ministry" award and
most recently, The Lucien E. Blackwell Guiding Light Community
Award in 2017. Bishop Palmer serves as the corresponding Secretary for
the National Congress of Black Women, Philadelphia Chapter and
actively serves in several capacities on several committees. Additionally,
she was appointed to the PA Re-entry Council under the leadership of
Executive Deputy Attorney General Robert K. Reed where their focus is
to provide strategic and tangible ways to attack and reduce recidivism for
all inmates in PA.
The occasion on March 16th, will also observe the official retirement
of Archbishop Anthony Floyd, Sr. and his 89th Birthday. The newly
formed MET Community Choir , of the renown [The MET] and the
home to the Holy Ghost Headquarters where the Senior Pastor is Apostle
Mark Hatcher, will be lifting their voices in Praises to God in honor of
their Director, Bishop Mary, along with welcoming remarks from the
Shepherd of the Bright Hope Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Darron K.
McKinney, the Host Pastor. Immediately following the service, there
will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall of the Church.
Bishop Mary Floyd Palmer stated,”I am honored to receive the torch
being passed to me by my Uncle and I am determined to make Jesus, my
family, my Daddy, my Uncle, fellow clergy friends and all the members
of the Philadelphia Council of Clergy proud. This moment for me is not
only daunting, but humbling as I carry the mantles of two brothers
whose individual family legacies continue through me. Besides the
comfort of fellowship and encouragement, I intend to empower leaders
and others through training to be effective in evangelism, etiquette and
community engagement. During this transition, it is my hope for
membership growth and a continued partnering relationship with other
clergy, civic and community organizations whose goals are to actively
work with and be the voice for the least and most vulnerable of our
citizenry. To whom much is given, much is required."
