AR 416 - Architecture Design Studio 04

PROJECT 1 – Design by Research 15%

Research and Documentation

1) Introduction:
Tolerance - to be able to link, connect, and suture the parts together. The studio developed the
notion of tolerance as a measure of the articulation of physical details in architecture, as well as
programmatically, and in terms of the degree of fit of the architectural proposition into an
existing urban context. Tolerance is both a question of material; of technical precision and
connected to political and social structures at a wider level.

Participation - to have a share or to take part. It is a form of being together that enables
integrative social and spatial processes, and addresses design, planning, decision making,
building and management.

2) Learning Outcomes:
Upon the completion of this module, students will be able to:
CLO1 Analyze and interpret the site’s cultural and environmental significances with
expressional drawings and concept models.
CLO2 Refine intermediate-level design proposals towards a comprehensive and
considered architectural proposition.

3) Tasks

Task 1: Market Engagement

The Studio will be divided into 3 groups, working on the main project site.

We will start to research and articulate questions on communities’ engagement, like

participation, habitat, culture and people network from the scale of the city through to the
scale of immediate and personal.

You will start with the market site itself. Explore the market from inside out. Record the activities,
by talking to the stall owners, to the buyers, to passer-by and even to workers that transport
goods to the markets. Build up your understanding of how a market functions from day to night.

By recording and expressing your exploration, you will need to draw an A1 distinct map / visual.
Other presentable paper sizes are also required to back-up your map/visual. Show us the
progress that builds up your final A1.

Medium of communication: hand-drawn or hand-made with minimal digital.

Task 2 : Site Context

To begin this task you are to CAD out your chosen parcel within the 1KM radius.

Within the same grouping, continue to capture all existing site condition within your site. You will
need to understand the socio-economic of the area. Each group to have a final A4 sized report.

1. Site research. (historical background)

2. Site Analysis. (sun-path, wind direction and etc)
3. Topography. (how is the surrounding ground level)
4. Road circulation. (Vehicular & Pedestrian)
5. Building types. (residential, commercial, shop, F&B and etc)
6. Civic and Public Amenities.
7. Main source of income for the resident.
8. Any locally source material workshop.
9. Critical review of the report, what do expect in near future within the vicinity.

Task 3: Site Context Model

ONE final 1:500 plaster site model.

The main market building ought to be taken out to replace with your design proposals on later
stage of the semester.

Important heritage buildings if there are any should be given a different treatment. Use colour
pigment plaster.

*there will be an induction workshop on MADE LAB for the whole Studio 4.

PROJECT 2 – Design Strategy - 25%

Le Corbusier

1) Introduction:
From project 1, we are to expand research into architecture design strategies. Design strategies are
means of exploring, experimenting and testing out ideas and concepts. We are to produce series of
models and sketches/drawings towards the end of this project 2, while not having a fixed outcome
of what you should be proposing. This stage required intensive exploration of site context, building
and space in paper.

2) Learning Outcomes:
Upon the completion of this module, students will be able to:

CLO1 Analyze and interpret the site’s cultural and environmental significances with
expressional drawings and concept models.
CLO2 Refine intermediate-level design proposals towards a comprehensive and considered
architectural proposition.
CLO3 Incorporate technical and environmental areas of study into the design process at
an intermediate level

3) Tasks:
Task 1: Site Context – Programe

Within the chosen site context, start to look into the site strategies and proposed programe that
eventually would complement to the existing Market. Reflect back all the research done under
Project 1.

Whatever programs that are proposed MUST have a relationship with the existing market. You have
to decide and explore if the existing market spaces are to be reduce, to expand, to be shifted, to
be elevated or to be divided into series of different spaces.

New programme such as storage, new market configuration, open space, green house,
commercial spaces, flea market, gathering space, games park or etc…..

Task 2: Site Visit – Kuala Terrenganu

From the site walk around Kuala Terengganu choose a row of buildings of your choice. This could be
a choice of façade, alleyway or space. Thereafter, use your imagination to transform your sketches
/ photos using technique of montage. Develop a critical understanding of how do you preserve the
building heritage value, by adding or subtracting architectural elements such as doors, windows,
wall, roof, landscape, and etc.

Task 3: Form-Making

This task required rigorous experimenting with sketches, roughly scaled plan, sections, elevations and
roughly scaled models (1:500). Place your proposals to the site plaster model and negotiate with the
immediate site surrounding.

Task 4: Spatial Quality

To produce a portion of the existing building in 1:25 OR 1:50 scale. This model / drawing is meant to
be dissected out to explore on the spatial quality that you propose. Photograph your space with
montage on existing site, human activities & light quality.

PROJECT 3 – The Market - 40%

Markthal Rotterdam, MVRDV, 2014.

1) Introduction:
The final project where students’ capacity to transfer previously learned skills: architectonics,
ergonomics and manipulation of materials into a project of slightly higher complexity, and challenge
students to create insightful and innovative designs to preserve an existing market building with
introduction of new programme to enrich the idea of A Market.

Main project building,

3) Tasks:

Task 1a: Measured drawings

Group task to conduct measured-drawings on the existing building and landscape within the
boundary. All existing interior space configuration need to be mapped out. Students are allowed to
use electronic measurement devices. All drawings to be finalize with CAD.

1. Site plan with boundary line.

2. All floor plans, including roof plan.
3. Four (4) external elevations and internal elevations and two (2) cross- section.
4. Landscape & hard-scape (drains, telephone or electrical post, walkway and etc).

Task 1b: Existing Traders.

Speak to the local existing traders to really understand how a market functions. Map out the synergy
of market in a tangible way.

Food diagram, people movement, sectional, conversation, stall kiosk, carbon footprint, scale…

Task 2: Functional Spaces

Expand from Project 2 and determine if your previous proposed program are suitable.

Existing total build-up area of 600m2 and minimum 2 storey. Work on the measured drawings to
build up your proposal and also series of models to test the form.

Task 3: Building Form

This task required rigorous experimenting with sketches, roughly scaled plan, sections, elevations and
roughly scaled models at 1:500.

Prepare series of models to test on the spatial configuration and external façade design at 1:200.

Spatial quality explore at 1:50 / 1:100 model.

Task 4: Technical Consideration

1. Apply passive design your proposals.
2. Basic services consideration such as toilets, staircases and ramps.
3. Most importantly develop a typical proposed section on existing building. (how did you react
to the existing details / materials and building form)

INTERNAL REVIEW’S REQUIREMENT:

1. Bring in all works from Project 1 and Project 2.

2. Bring in all sketch models in 1:500
3. Sketch model in larger scale 1:200
4. One sectional model in 1:50/1:25 showing spatial quality between the existing buildings with
the new proposal.
5. Hand-sketches / Cad drawings in plans, sections and perspective.
6. Series of spatial quality images generated from photographing model.
