Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90 Description and Operating Instructions

1 General Information on the SPSC2000-A90

The central control and signalling unit SPSC2000-A90 is used for controlling, capturing, measuring
and signalling the operating data of power supply systems containing type GR90 rectifier modules.
Signal exchange between all the rectifiesrs (GR) in a power supply system and the SPSC2000-A90
is done via CANopen bus. The SPSC2000-A90 is connected via screw type connectors. GR90 type
rectifiers and I/O-extension modules communicate via CANopen bus. Find more detailed information
on the termination in chapter 3.2.1.
The factory setting of the SPSC2000-A90 is a configuration to control a single PS900 cabinet type
S30050-G6361-X100 (see chapter 3 and 4).
Change SPSC2000-A90 controller settings either by means of MMI-interface or by using the
SPSC2000 configuration tool.
Note the actual setting of the SPSC2000-A90 before changing the configuration!
The SPSC2000-A90 supports the following functions:

Measurement of voltages, currents, and temperatures

Evaluation of system voltage, battery voltage, and temperature
Detection of AC mains failures and AC mains faults
Capturing the rectifiers’ operating states
Monitoring the battery voltage and battery fuses
Monitoring the load output circuit fuses
Indicating faults and outputting remote signals via relay contacts
Temperature-controlled voltage correction for the rectifiers
Over-voltage induced rectifier shutdown

Automatic charging control after AC mains failures

Control of the battery room fans during charging
Disconnecting the cabinet ventilation in case of AC mains failure
Battery under-voltage disconnection, control of the K10
Control of GR90 type rectifiers via CANopen bus

3.1.1 Keys
The four keys on the front panel are used for controlling the display and menu functions of the SPSC2000-
A90. Their meanings are as follows:
ESCAPE key: To return to a higher menu level within the menu,
ESC without changing parameters.
Cursor key: To move up and down in the menu, increase/decrease
set values, choose preset parameters.
ENTER key: To jump to lower menu level, confirm entries, select
OK parameters.

3.1.2 LED Indicators

The control and signalling unit SPSC2000-A90 has three LED’s that
Green ON-LED illuminates as soon as power is applied across X9:12-13 or X9:14-15
Red AL1-LED indicates an active critical alarm
Red AL2-LED indicates an active major alarm

Table 2: MMI LED indicators

3.1.3 Liquid Crystal Display

The control and signalling unit SPSC2000-A90 offers a two lines 24-digit LCD display that is used for indicat-
ing measured values, fault reports and operating states. It also can be used to configure the power supply
system by means of the keys and the menu Use MMI-preference settings to adjust backlight illumination
and contrast for best legibility.
Backlight illumination shuts down
automatically after a delay when no key was
pressed for increased lifetime.

5.1 Start-up Screen
During normal operation without any active event, the display shows the assigned site name in com-
bination with the current date and time. Otherwise, if any event is active and assigned to be dis-
played it messages the latest event.

5.1.1 Using the Buttons

There are four push-buttons to help you work through the menus. The different menus, displayed
when the push-buttons beside the display are pressed are shown in figures 2ff.
Select menu language as described in paragraph 5.2.1.7.

The arrow up (↑) and arrow down (↓) keys are used to
move up and down within the menu,
to choose specific settings (e.g. Yes / No) from a given list,
to adjust variables by given steps within a predefined range.

Use the OK and ESC buttons:

to change the current menu to the under- or overlaying level menus (if any)
to accept or escape a function, for example editing a parameter.
Return from sub-menu to higher level by pressing ESC-key ignores any changes made. Leaving
sub-menu that allows setting of parameters by pressing the OK-key, stores changes made into a
static memory. An ongoing storage process messages on the LC-display: “Storing ...”.

5.2 Menu Tree Structure

While the basic menu structure is fixed, number of displayed values varies depending on the system
architecture. A special configuration tool allows configuring the controller according to the system ar-
chitecture.

Total current load: Value measured across the cabinets load shunt.

Battery current (n): Value measured across optionally mounted battery shunts. Up to four measure-
ments are possible.

Total battery current cabinet: Displayed value was calculated either by summing the individually
measured battery shunt values or by subtracting the measured load current from the total rectifier
current. Total rectifier current bases on the real time values queried from the installed rectifiers.

Total battery current system: In case of paralleled operation of PS900 cabinets with own controllers
installed this value represents the sum of individually evaluated cabinets total battery currents.

Total load current system: In case of paralleled operation of PS900 cabinets with own controllers in-
stalled this value represents the sum of individually measured cabinets total load currents.

5.2.2.1.3 Scan Measurements Temperature

Total load power cabinet: Result from multiplication “cabinet total load current” by “system voltage”

Total load power System: Sum of individual cabinets “total load power cabinet” values.

5.2.2.2 Scan I/O-Ext. measurement

SPSC2000-A90 controllers can operate in paralleled architecture. If, one of the controllers acts as
MASTER, the other controllers operate in I/O-extension mode. With correct configuration of the sys-
tem, I/O-extension menu allows to query measurement values enabled on these controllers.

Page 19 of 28 A30050-X6351-X-2-7618
Description and Operating Instructions Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90

5.2.2.3 Scan Rectifiers

Scanning the rectifiers informs about the current output voltage and current of any rectifier type
GR90 recognised by the system with a valid CAN node ID assigned. A paging command send to the
rectifier selected forces the green power LED of the rectifier to flash two times per second. This al-
lows locating the rectifier assigned by the controller in the system.

5.2.2.4 Scan Events

Allows querying all active events with display enabled (see Configuration Tool)
Loop through event messages table by use of arrow keys. Sort sequence is by date and time stamp,
latest first. Leaving and re-entering the event table resets to latest entry.

5.2.2.5 Scan History Memory

Selection allows querying events stored in the history memory. Find event messages sorted by date
and time stamp, latest first. A leading +sign indicates the event becomes active, a leading – sign in-
dicates a cancelled event. Scroll through table using arrow keys.

5.2.3 Configuration
The CONFIG menu displays the configuration functions available in the MMI of the SPSC2000-A90.

5.2.3.1 Configuration Enter the password

Access to this menu needs entering of a fixed password. Factory setting of this password is the
number: 1234. By means of configuration tool password number can changed.
Entering CONFIG level the first time the controller automatically requests this password. Sequentially
adjust digits using the arrow keys. Confirm digit by pressing the OK key. This automatically forwards
to the next digit or finishes input after confirmation of forth digit. ESC-key either cancels the function
or steps back one digit.
With acceptance of the password entered, the controller automatically forwards to the under-laying
menu. Access is valid approximately another 10 minutes after pressing any key. Access rights fin-
ishes automatically, if delay elapses without further input.

5.2.3.2 Configuration CAN node ID

Allows to either set the controller to operate in MASTER mode (node ID = 1) or to work as IO-
extension. Up to 16 IO-extensions are valid. Selection of any IO-EXT-number automatically sets a
valid node ID to the controller.

Note: Use of IO-extension controllers needs an additional configuration of the MASTER controller by
means of Configuration tool (P30210-W3-A910). See configuration tool documentation (A30050-
X6351-A900) for detailed information.

5.2.3.3 Configuration Standard Configs

Selection of one from 16 predefined configuration tables automatically customises factory settings to
specific system architectures.

Note: Current FW-version might not offer configuration needed. Please contact your sales represen-
tative if FW-version is available that covers your system.

A30050-X6351-X-2-7618 Page 20 of 28
Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90 Description and Operating Instructions

5.2.3.4 Configuration Measurements

SPSC2000-A90 offers several functions to customise the controller settings according to your sys-
tem architecture. Use configuration tool for complete system configuration.
Selection of operation modes, adjustments of sensor parameters and definition of rectifier configura-
tion is possible also by means of MMI. Please note that configuration by MMI is possible only to
MASTER controller settings. Any configuration controllers operating in IO-EXT-mode must be done
by means of Configuration Tool.

5.2.3.4.1 Configuration Measurements Load shunt

Selection allows changing the shunt size to a predefined value selectable from an array of prede-
fined magnitudes (40, 60, 100, 150, 250, 600, 1000, 1500, and 2500). Disable load current meas-
urement function setting variable to NO. Assign values not offered by MMI-table by means of con-
figuration tool.

5.2.3.4.2 Configuration Measurements Battery (n) shunt

Definition of a maximum of four different battery current shunts is possible. Select size individually to
each of the four battery shunts possible. Assignment of NO to a shunt disables current measurement
of according battery string.

Note: Floating current measurement inputs must be set to NO to prevent erroneous measurement.

5.2.3.4.3 Configuration Measurements System temperature

Selecting YES enables the system temperature measurement. In parallel, this enables all functions
that use that reading and the function itself is active. Selecting NO disables both the measurement
itself and all active system temperature functions.

5.2.3.4.4 Configuration Measurements Battery temperature

Selecting YES enables the system temperature measurement. In parallel, this enables all functions
that use that reading and the function itself is active. Selecting NO disables both the measurement
itself and all active system temperature functions.

5.2.3.5 Configuration Rectifier Parameters

Choose rectifier parameters to define kind, type specific settings, and different mode voltages
needed to operate the power supply system. All characteristics are optimised to lead type batteries.

5.2.3.5.1 Configuration Rectifier Parameters Control type

Current version allows selection from either CAN-controlled rectifiers (series PS900), series 600 con-
trolled by PWM-signal or series 600 analogue-regulated. Factory setting is CAN-controlled.
Next menu-topics allow adjustment of nominal voltages assigned to different operation modes.
Please recognise the SPSC2000 controller directly adjusts only CAN-type rectifiers. Adjust Series
600 rectifiers’ nominal voltages directly at the rectifier. Nevertheless, setting of nominal voltages on
the controller is necessary for correct system supervision.

5.2.3.5.2 Configuration Rectifier Parameters BCM nominal voltage

Adjust BCM voltage according to battery specification. Normal setting is between 2.33 V to 2.37 V
per cell.

Page 21 of 28 A30050-X6351-X-2-7618
Description and Operating Instructions Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90

5.2.3.5.3 Configuration Rectifier Parameters FCM nominal voltage

Adjust FCM voltage according to battery specification. Standard setting is 2.23 V per cell.

5.2.3.5.4 Configuration Rectifier Parameters BTM nominal voltage

Currently BTM is not used. No adjustments are necessary.

5.2.3.5.5 Configuration Rectifier Parameters Current limiting

Use this setting to limit the maximum output current of all CAN-type rectifiers installed.

5.2.3.5.6 Configuration Rectifier Parameters Power limiting

Use this setting to limit the maximum DC output power of all CAN-type rectifiers installed.

5.2.3.5.7 Configuration Rectifier Parameters Over-voltage

Setting defines the maximum DC voltage allowed on the DC system rail. In case of exceeding the
voltage, the rectifiers shut down automatically.
Note: Two settings allow supervising power systems over-voltage events, rectifiers’ over-voltage
protection threshold and system over-voltage threshold. To ensure optimised system operation set
rectifier threshold to a higher value than system over-voltage threshold. This ensures in case of a
over-voltage event on the system rail the controller supervises the rectifiers actively. If set contrari-
wise, rectifiers automatically shut down to a locked state and need a reset command to return to
normal operation.

5.2.3.5.8 Configuration Rectifier Parameters Extended voltage range

CAN controlled K1390- type rectifiers automatically shut down, when AC-input voltage leaves a pre-
defined operating range. To allow operation with lower AC-input voltage set extended AC-range to
yes.

5.2.3.5.9 Configuration Rectifier Parameters Less three phases operation

CAN controlled K1390- type rectifiers internal three power modules are feed by individual AC-input
lines. This setting specifies if either rectifiers shut down when one or two phases are missing or con-
tinues operation with reduced maximum output power (reduction by 1/3 per missing phase).

5.2.3.6 Configuration Battery function: Disconnection

Battery disconnection function prevents damage to the batteries caused by deep discharge. Factory
default is disconnection enabled. Disabling that function is possible only by means of configuration
tool.

5.2.3.6.1 Configuration Battery function: Disconnection Under-voltage protection

Setting this parameter allows definition of a system voltage threshold used to disconnect the batter-
ies in case of voltage falls below adjusted value.

5.2.3.6.2 Configuration Battery function: Disconnection Under-voltage protection alarm

Select between two levels of alarm priority or disable the alarm.

A30050-X6351-X-2-7618 Page 22 of 28
Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90 Description and Operating Instructions

5.2.3.7 Configuration Battery function: charge control

If the system uses backup batteries, settings exactly specify boost charge parameters to use.

5.2.3.7.1 Configuration Battery function: charge control Charge mode

Select between different charges techniques or disable the function.

5.2.3.7.2 Configuration Battery function: charge control Nominal battery voltage

Select nominal system operation voltage to either 48V DC or 60V DC.

5.2.3.7.3 Configuration Battery function: charge control Mains fault duration

Adjusted value specifies the minimum mains fault duration, needed for automatically start of boost
charge mode after mains grid returns.

5.2.3.7.4 Configuration Battery function: charge control Charge time

Adjusted value defines the maximum duration boost charge mode is active.

5.2.3.7.5 Configuration Battery function: charge control Additional charge time

Adjustment of this value must be done only when boost charge with current limitation technique is
selected. Adjust for additional boost charge time to ensure batteries are charged to full capacity.

5.2.3.7.6 Configuration Battery function: charge control Current to cancel

Value needs entry of nominal battery capacity values defined during battery installation by means of
configuration tool. Varying “current to cancel” value allows to fine adjust boost charge duration to
customer needs.

5.2.3.8 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

To compensate for some of the negative effects on batteries due to high ambient temperatures, this
option can be used. The function regulates the charging voltage in relation to the temperature of the
batteries. The degree of regulation can be set in this menu.

5.2.3.8.1 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Temperature compensation
“Yes” temperature regulation enables temperature compensated voltage regulation options. “No” dis-
ables all sub-menu options.

5.2.3.8.2 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Active at Boost charge mode
To ensure charging of the batteries to full capacity even at higher ambient temperatures, tempera-
ture compensation is to disable during boost charge mode. If battery temperature supervision (see
configuration tool) is active battery still is protected against exceeding allowed operating temperature
range. In case of battery temperature rises above a threshold set, BCM automatically cancels.

Page 23 of 28 A30050-X6351-X-2-7618
Description and Operating Instructions Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90

5.2.3.8.3 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Number of cells
To confirm system specific calculation of all regulation parameters used within temperature compen-
sation input of correct number of lead acid cells is necessary.

5.2.3.8.4 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Temp Coefficient
Set temperature coefficient according to the battery specifications. Factory setting is -4mV/°C per
cell, a value that fits close to most batteries.

Note: Only negative values from 0 mV/°C to -10 mV/°C are valid. Values outside of that range are
not accepted!

5.2.3.8.5 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Base temperature FCM
Base temperature defines the value charge voltage is exactly nominal FCM voltage. Temperature
coefficient normally is defined combined with a base temperature of 20°C that is equal to the factory
setting. Change value only if battery specification informs a different value.

5.2.3.8.6 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Base temperature BCM
Base temperature defines the value charge voltage is exactly nominal BCM voltage. Temperature
coefficient normally is defined combined with a base temperature of 20°C that is equal to the factory
setting. Change value only if battery specification informs different value.

5.2.3.8.7 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Min voltage active
Selecting “yes” confirms the charge voltages not decreases by means of temperature compensation
to a value less than threshold set at “min voltage value”. “No” disables the function.

5.2.3.8.8 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Min voltage value
In case of “minimum voltage” function is enabled, value defines the voltage threshold temperature
compensation regulation will not undershoot.

5.2.3.8.9 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Max voltage active
Selecting “yes” confirms the charge voltages not increases by means of temperature compensation
to a value more than threshold set at “maximum voltage value”.

5.2.3.8.10 Configuration Battery functions: Temperature compensation

Max voltage value
In case of “maxium voltage” function is enabled, value defines the voltage threshold temperature
compensation regulation will not overshoot.

5.2.3.9 Configuration System functions: Temperature supervision

If enabled function monitors the ambient temperature. If temperature exceeds a threshold set by
means of configuration tool either controller shuts down the rectifiers or/and disconnects the battery.

Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90 Description and Operating Instructions

5.2.3.10 Configuration System functions: Temperature supervision

Battery disconnection T> 43°C
Enable function by selecting “Yes” or disable it choosing “No”.
Note: Function name T>43°C relates to former used

5.2.3.11 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring

Within this sub-menu, all system specific values can be defined, needed to supervise the power sys-
tem. Standard systems normally need all voltage monitoring functions for correct operation thus ena-
bling or disabling of individual features is possible only by means

5.2.3.11.1 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring

Over-voltage protection value
Over-voltage protection function is used to immediate shutdown connected rectifiers by means of a
global message send via CAN-bus and by activating the shutdown relay. Define the exact threshold
value to generate that event by adjusting this value.
Note: For correct system operation, over-voltage protection value within System functions: voltage
monitoring should be lower than over-voltage value used to shutdown rectifiers into a locked
mode.(see: paragraph 5.2.3.5.7 or rectifier descriptions).

5.2.3.11.2 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Over-voltage protection hys-

teresis
As long as the system voltage stays within a range higher than the over-voltage protection value mi-
nus hysteresis adjusted it is not possible to clear the event when active.

5.2.3.11.3 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Over-voltage protection alarm

Function allows either to disable alarm forwarding or to assign an alarm priority level. Set flag to
none to disable or choose from two severity levels.

5.2.3.11.4 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Reconnection retries

Over-voltage supervision by controller allows to either immediate switch to a locked state, or to run
up to three retries to reinitiate normal operation. If over-voltage condition is still present, the system
remains in a locked state. Clearing locked state is possible by execution of “Unlock from over-
voltage” command.

5.2.3.11.5 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Over-voltage detection value

Function works like over-voltage protection but will not affect the system operation mode. Ensure
threshold is lower than over-voltage protection threshold.

5.2.3.11.6 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Over-voltage detection hystere-

sis
Over-voltage detection hysteresis value is used to define that range, where an over-voltage detection
event stays active with a voltage lower than the over-voltage detection threshold.

5.2.3.11.7 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Over-voltage detection alarm

Function allows either to disable alarm forwarding or to assign an alarm priority level. Set flag to
none to disable or choose from two severity levels.

5.2.3.11.8 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Under-voltage detection value

Threshold defined here generates an event in case of under voltage condition that allows informing
in time to prevent the system from shutdown due to a low voltage condition.

Page 25 of 28 A30050-X6351-X-2-7618
Description and Operating Instructions Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90

5.2.3.11.9 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Under -voltage detection hys-
teresis
Hysteresis value specifies the range a detection alarm remains active even if voltage is higher than
threshold value.
Note: to prevent system to run into a hick-up condition value should be higher than the batteries off-
load voltage.

5.2.3.11.10 Configuration System function: Voltage monitoring Under -voltage detection alarm
Function allows either to disable alarm forwarding or to assign an alarm priority level. Set flag to
none to disable or choose from two severity levels.

5.2.4 Commands

5.2.4.1 Commands Enter the password

Access to this menu needs entering of a fixed password. Factory setting of this password is the
number: 1234. In current version, changing of this password is not possible. Entering CONFIG level
the first time the controller automatically requests this password. Sequentially adjust digits using the
arrow keys. Confirm digit by pressing the OK key. This automatically forwards to the next digit or fin-
ishes input after confirmation of forth digit. ESC-key either cancels the function or steps back one
digit.

With acceptance of the password entered, the controller automatically forwards to the under-laying
menu. Access is valid approximately another 10 minutes after pressing any key. Access rights fin-
ishes automatically, if delay elapses without further input.

5.2.4.2 Commands Reset controller

Selection of that command and confirmation by pressing OK forces both the Master and all I/O-EXT-
controllers to perform a hardware reset.

5.2.4.3 Commands Reset rectifiers

Selection of that command and confirmation by pressing OK initiates the controller to send a reset
command to all rectifiers connected. In case of GR90-type rectifiers, controller spreads a reset-
message via CAN-bus; in parallel, it activates a relay used to forward a reset pulse to e.g. GR60-
type rectifiers.

5.2.4.4 Commands Force LSS-scan

Use this command to force an update of the system architecture table stored in the MASTER control-
ler. Execution is necessary after changing a CAN device. This cancels a CAN communication alarm
generated during change of CAN device.

5.2.4.5 Commands Start charge

Performing that command initiates a manual start of a boost charge cycle.

5.2.4.6 Commands Stop charge

Performing that command initiates a manual stop of a boost charge cycle. The system immediate re-
turns to floating charge mode.

A30050-X6351-X-2-7618 Page 26 of 28
Control and Signalling Unit SPSC200-A90 Description and Operating Instructions

5.2.4.7 Commands Unlock from over-voltage

Use this command to release a shutdown lock generated by an over-voltage condition on the DC-
rail.
If fault condition is not longer valid, the system continues normal operation. If over-voltage is still pre-
sent, the system runs the over-voltage protection routine according to its configuration. See para-
graph 5.2.3.11.1 for settings.

6 Signalling
The MMI displays all or only specific event and failure messages enabled by factory setting or by
means of configuration tool. Operator might request for information that is more detailed, by analys-
ing the history log entries or with the help of the configuration tool.
The unit offers several floating contacts for hardwired remote signalling. Configuration allows defin-
ing an alarm event either as critical or as major. Factory setting activates a critical alarm immedi-
ately, a major alarm delayed. Front panel red LED A1 indicates any active critical alarm, yellow A2
LED illuminates with an active major alarm.
There are tree specific events (mains failure, boost charge mode, discharge) forwarded to dry con-
tacts. Use contacts either to control power site installations and/or for remote monitoring.
