5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Coal Outcrop Numbering
Each geologist has unique coal outcrop number which is in series. It should be
capital letter without space and a consistent way. The outcrop serial number will
continue within CCoW. They will change when geologist move to other CCoW.
When geologist comes back again to previous CCoW to conduct field mapping, it
should continue coal outcrop number of the last it has within that CCoW. If not
remember, geologist can check into Gbis database

<CCoW><initial geos><OC sequence #>

Hani Adi Graha conducts fieldwork in Lahai Coal CCoW LHA006

5.2 Non Coal Outcrop Numbering

Non Coal outcrop number is not loaded to Gbis. The data is only used for Arc GIS.
Its naming protocol is similar to coal outcrop. However the sequence number is
consist of 4 digits and suffixed by lithology code.
Similar to coal outcrop number, the non coal outcrop number is series. It will
continue within CCoW and change when geologist moves to other CCoW. It has to
continue to the last non coal outcrop number when geologist back the previous
CCoW.

5.3 Borehole Numbering

Each borehole has unique number to avoid duplicate name. The borehole number
will continue within each CCoW. It should be capital letter without space. Each
borehole is distinguished by CCoW code and drilling purpose. The initial number of
Borehole sequence represents a code of resource block.

Bulk sample drilling in Haju, Lahai CCoW LH1025BS

5.4 Core Sample Numbering

Core/coal outcrop samples number has a unique number that should be capital
letter without space and consistent in lettering. In the numbering of the sample
should reflect borehole number (without drilling purpose code, such as PC,PO, BS)
and followed by 2 digit ascending number from top to bottom. For example is
sample number LH106001 means that sample is taken from first seam/ply from top
(01) in borehole LH1060PC of Hajuk, Lahai CCoW.

Sample number should be input to logcheck in sample Number column on Geology

table.

The sample numbers are recorded in sample submission sheet with depth interval
that adjusted by geophysical log, seam, core recovery, analytical schedule, and
number of bags. Sample number on georservice’s report should match with the
sample number that written in Sample submission sheet. If any different it will make
difficult when data transfer process to Gbis database.

The following is sample number on table geology in Logcheck

For combining samples, the new sample name of the combined samples should be
created. The new sample name is borehole number followed suffixed first and last
sample number that combined.
Example:
Sample LH100602
Sample LH100603 LH100602_04
Sample LH100604

5.5 LOX, Geotechnical and ARD Sample

File name procedure for geotechnical samples and ARD samples is similar with coal
quality sample, where commenced with borehole number that include drilling
purpose (LX for LOX drilling, GT for Geotechnical, and EV for ARD) and then
followed by 2 digit ascending sample number from top to bottom
For example:
LH1004GT01 LH1004GT: Borehole number for geotechnical purpose
01: Sample number that taken from the top of
lithology

5.6 Coal outcrop Sample Numbering

Coal outcrop samples number has a unique number which is capital letter without
space and consistent in lettering. In the numbering of the sample should reflect
Coal outcrop number and followed by 2 digit ascending number from top to bottom
of the coal outcrop. For example is sample number MDP23501 means that sample
is taken from first seam/ply from top (01) at Coal outcrop MDP235 of Maruwai
CCoW.
Coal outcrop sample number should be input to logcheck in sample Number column
on Geology table.

The Coal outcrop sample numbers are recorded in sample submission sheet with
depth interval, analytical schedule, and number of bags. Sample number on
georservice’s report should match with the sample number that written in Sample
submission sheet. If any different it will make difficult when data transfer process to
Gbis database.

5.7 Core Photograph Numbering

Drill core should be coloured photograph on site on the split immediately after core
come out from the core barrel. Before taking photograph the core should be free of
drilling mud and oil coated.

To acquire the best photograph that cover each run, the maximum core length is
150 cm that meet with length of core split.
The camera should be on the centre of the core length and max 180m away from
the core. The core should get enough sunshine to make bright picture.

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Introduction
The wellsite geologist, as PT Billiton Indonesia representative on each drilling rig, is
responsible for the day to day supervision of the terms and conditions of the drilling
contract including matters related to chargeable activities, health and safety and the
environment.

Cost effectiveness is how to minimize drilling expenditure to obtain maximum valuable

technical information without sacrificing the quality of data collected. The wellsite
geologist shall more pay attention to carry out cost effectiveness in the field

The wellsite geologist is regularly responsible for the entry of drillhole data from chip
and core samples into portable computers and sample dispatch to Balikpapan office.
The accurate field recording of drillhole data is critical to the process by which coal
resources are modelled. Eventually, decisions on how and when to mine deposits
depend on accurate drillhole data.

5.2 Responsibility of Wellsite Geologist

To effectively carry out their role, wellsite geologist shall be familiar with BHPB Health
Safety and Environment standards, the drilling contract including contract rates,
collection of samples, core recovery, plugging of drill holes. A copy of Drilling Contract

shall be stored on the base camp as guideline if any dispute with drilling contractor. In
particular, the Wellsite geologist shall be responsible for:

• Be on site at all the times and carry out daily safety meeting and sign off wellsite
geologist Daily Checklist with driller contractor.

• Ensure The accuracy of times, metreages and consumables usage on the

drilling contractor DDR's.

• Logging chip samples that collected every 1 meter drill at the rig and watching
change lithology related to changed of penetration rate and variation in bit and
chain/drill pipe/engine/ noise

• Wellsite geologist is required to know the drilling depth in progress in order core
or cutting depth can be recorded as accurate as possible which it can be done
through recognise length of Kelly, drill rods, drill bit, sub-bit before start drilling.

• Ensure for partial core that coring should be commenced at least 1 meter above
seam roof while end of drilling will be carried out 5 m below coal seam in order
all coal seam section can be captured by geophysical log. If no coal seam, the
depth is appropriate with drilling target.

• Ensure each hole is effectively run by geophysical log.

• Ensure the hole peg number can be identified and that the peg is placed in the
correct position relative to the drillhole.

• Ensure that each peg is marked clearly with borehole name, the total depth,
drilling date, and casing depth for the surveyor

• Ensure drill sites are left in a clean and tidy condition and a record of
Rehabilitation requirements kept.

• Ensure the next drillsite(s) has been prepared for the following drilling.

• Ensure that hard copy geophysics (2 copies) and .las files for each hole have
been generated and supplied by the geophysical logger.

• Making accurate depth measurements at the beginning and end of core runs
and allocating Core Loss if clearly evident.

• As required, sampling, packing, and promptly despatched coal cores for quality
analysis to Superintendent/Senior Geologist in Balikpapan for verification prior
to send to Laboratory.

• As required, sampling and testing LOX samples as procedure on MCP Drillsite

Procedure Manual.

• As required, taking core samples for geotechnical testing as procedure on MCP

Drillsite Procedure Manual.

55.00 - 60.00 (From Depth) (To Depth)

• The wellsite geologist shall be responsible for informing the geophysical logging
operator the location of drilled holes and coal seam intersection to ensure the
holes perfectly are logged as soon as practical. At this time the geophysical
logging operator shall be notified of any hazardous conditions likely to be
encountered in the drillholes that could endanger the logging tools.

• After drilling complete, the wellsite geologist should inform to Surveyor as soon
as possible the location of drilling for ground survey.

• The wellsite geologist shall inform the status of the drilling program to Operation
Coordinator on a daily basis. Afterwards Operation Coordinator will forward to
Project Geologist/Superintendent Geology.

5.3 Data Collection

The collection of drillhole data in notebook PC’s is the primary responsibility of the
wellsite geologist. The consistently field data naming system is essential (refer to
SOP_EXPL_FIELD DATA NAMING STANDARD V1).

The role of wellsite geologist in data collection includes:

• The correct recording of borehole header information into Logcheck including

project name; hole number; hole type; subtype; total depth; state, county, block,
lease, traverse (Drillsite name), start and finish date, survey method, geological
data source; map zone; Company ( drilling Contractor), Person ( Geologist’s

1.0 PURPOSE
The aim of this document is to describe procedure for selecting, collecting, and
dispatching a coal core samples in a consistent way of the core recovered borehole
so that the subsequent analysis is representative used for evaluation coal quality
and characterisation

2.0 SCOPE
The procedure applies to Drill Supervisor, Project Geologist who in charge in
sampling a coal core in the drilling operation which is commenced once the core
has been logged until the dispatch of sample from drillsite to Bumbun Camp.

3.0 REFERENCE
Procedure: MCP Drill site Procedure Manual, June 2005.
Procedure: IMC_EX_P001_SOP_Field Data Naming Standard_V01.
Form: IMC _EX_F004_Coal Sample Submission Sheet.
Form: IMC _EX_F013_Tear Off Sample Label.

4.0 DEFINITION
Shall and Should The word "shall" is to be understood as mandatory and the word
"should" as non-mandatory, advisory or recommended.

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Introduction
The collection and dispatch coal for analysis are important for resource and reserve
estimations. The analytical results that supplied by laboratory is used as basis for
coal quality models for long and short term mine plan, prediction of wash coal
quality, and maintain coal quality in mining operation.
In early exploration stage in the undeveloped area, the coal samples is essentials
for the viability of a potential mine.
5.2 Selecting Sample Intervals
Coal seams and stratigraphy in Maruwai Coal Project are already well established in
each resource block. The sampling interval is determined before drilling carried out.
However at some resource block area with coal quality specific requirement like
Haju resource block, the different coal sample procedure is applied after discussion
between mine plan superintendent, coal quality engineer, and resource delineation
manager. In the field in any decision to change well established sample interval

shall be made only after consultation with and agreement by Geology

superintendent.
For the areas where coal seams are uncorrelated and stratrigraphy poorly
understood, sampling should be at discretion of the geologist, based on seam
brightness logs and/or geophysical logs, using its experience and professional
expertise. Geologists should not combine samples if there is any doubt, please
subdivided sample into several plies base on coal brightness and/or lithology
difference as once sample is combined they can not be split. Subdivision samples
can be combined later at the laboratory.
The general guideline for selecting sample interval is:
• All seam intersection 0.30 m or equal/greater in thickness shall be sampled
for analysis. This guideline applies to the total seam thickness rather than
individual coaly plies in an interbanded seam;
• Minimum individual sample thickness shall be 0.20 m; There is no maximum
thickness, the seam will be subdivided if there is change in character;
• Oxidized (weathered) or coal/heat affected coal shall be sampled separately.
• It is also required to sample 20 cm of the immediate roof and floor and
request laboratory to carry out appropriate analysis. This sampling allows
calculate roof and floor dilution effects during various mining techniques.
5.3 Sampling, Labelling, and Sample Report Sheets
The Drill Supervisor/Field Geologist shall sample the coal and label the samples
using the following steps:
• Prepare transparent plastic sample bags by writing project, hole identifier,
and sample number on two bags, and sliding one bag inside the other to
ensure sample security.
• Handle the section of coal core carefully as it is extracted from the core
barrel.
• Transfer the core onto a core table that has been constructed to receive the
length and diameter of the core being drilled.
• Remove all drilling mud or cutting from the core using clean water.
• Measure the core recovery using tape measure, decide amount and place of
core loss and mark the core loss including interval depth in blackboard. You
should discuss with driller to determine depth interval of possibility core loss.
• Mark the depth of core every 0.5 m on the core using chalk or crayon.
• Take photograph of core every 1.5 m that showing depth of core on
blackboard.
• Record lithology onto sedimentary lithology sheet and ensure that sample
number is recorded on the lithology log and on the sample submission
sheet.
• Decide where we will take the coal core sample that based on sample
protocol guideline and then mark the sample interval on the clean core with
chalk or crayon.
• For coal seam with thickness more than 40 cm, cut each coal sample 40cm
length for easy loading to cartoon.

• Split the core at the sample boundaries cleanly.

• Place the core samples in their bags, taking care to include the complete
sample.
• Place sample label that has been marked (borehole number, sample
number, number of samples, date sampled, and lithology name) between
the two bags, once the total number used has been determined.
• Fold inner bag over to preserve moisture, and secure with tape at the top of
outer bag.
• All samples are recorded in coal sample report sheet including borehole
number, sample number, sample depth interval that has been corrected by
geophysical log, lithology name, etc.
5.4 Core boxing and Labelling
The drill supervisor shall carry out core boxing and labelling using the following
steps:
• Once sufficient quantities of samples have been collected, all samples are
loaded into cartoon with max length of each sample is 40 cm. The cartoon
should be labelled with coal sample report sheet and address of destination,
and number of cartoon. The cartoons are usually dispatched to Geoservices
Balikpapan (address below); however, the dispatch destination and address
shall be confirmed by Project Geologist/ Superintendent Geology.
Geoservices Laboratory
Jl. M.T Haryono No. 161,
Balikpapan 76114
• The cartoon lid shall be securely wrapped with tape and well packaged in
order not broken during transportation.
• The rest of the core recovered borehole that not sampled shall be loaded
into core box, mark project, borehole number, depth interval each core box,
total of core box, etc
• In corebox, coal core section that has been taken should be replaced with
wooden or Styrofoam blocks or PVC cut to size and give remark (depth,
sample number, type of sample taken, etc) and take photograph for every
corebox.
5.5 Sample Dispatch
The interval between drilling and testing period shall be kept to a minimum.
Consequently, the transport of samples to the appropriate destination need to be
planned, and arrangement put in place as part of the drilling program.
Transport arrangements are handled by logistic/operation personnel. However Drill
supervisor is responsible for dispatching core samples from drillsite to temporary
refrigerator storage in camp and then transport to Balikpapan warehouse, before
they are sent to Geoservice Laboratory Balikpapan.
Before sending cartoons of core samples from drill camp to Balikpapan office, the
following procedure shall be followed;

• Logging: Have core samples been correctly logged and geophysically

adjusted?
• Recording: Has the appropriate record been made of all samples?
• Sample packaging: Has the sample been packaged in the required manner
to protect it?
• Labelling: Have all samples been label in the approved manner?
After sending the cartoon of coal sample, the Drill supervisor shall email a
notification letter including coal sample report to Project Geologist/ Superintendent
Geology that will follow up to laboratory supervisor.
