Chapter III

Methodology

This chapter details out the research methodology that was used in the study

which includes the research design, sources of data, data gathering procedure,

instrumentation and the statistical tools, that was used in collecting the necessary data

from the respective respondents.

Research Design

The descriptive method of research was used in this study to figure out the level

of disaster preparedness of the barangay officials and residents, the common problems

experienced by the residents along the aforesaid variables and the recommended

solutions to the above variable. Descriptive method of research is a fact-finding study

with adequate and accurate interpretation of the findings.1 It illustrates present conditions,

practices, situations, or any phenomena based on impressions or reactions of respondents.

In this method, the respondents will answer the survey questionnaire in the easiest way

that they could understand the questions well on the level of their comprehension. The

interview will focused on the perception of the Barangay officials and also the

community regarding the implementation of their programs and projects to combat the

harmful effects of disasters, the availability and capacity of their facilities to respond to

the needs of their citizens, the availability and capacity of their equipment to respond to

the needs of the people, and the capacity and responsiveness of their rescue and relief in

times of disasters.

Sources of Data

The primary data of this study were collected from the input in the survey

questionnaires of the respondents. The data have been collected to cover every aspect of

the study. The information gathered from the survey questionnaire were compiled and

evaluated as per need of the study. The secondary sources were those gathered from

different studies, books, internet resources and other written materials that were available

on hand.

The presentation of the distribution of the respondents is presented below.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers gather the necessary data from the Barangay Sagpon Daraga,

Albay in the form of giving survey questionnaires to the respective officials and other

residents in the said area (See Appendix). Prior to this gathering procedure, the

researcher has to secure first the permission of the research coordinator, the research
39

chairman and the Barangay Captain of Sagpon Daraga, Albay, for them to conduct the

investigation and legally distribute the questionnaires.

The use of other research study as a guideline in the conduct of the study was also

done for the purpose of knowing the proper steps and procedure that is needed to be

observed. The researchers also use the help of the internet for the broader gathering of the

latest data that would support the further realization of the study. The data gathering

started right upon the approval of permits of the higher authorities. The researchers

personally distributed the questionnaires to each of the barangay officials and residents of

the area (see Appendix). The respondents were fully oriented that the questionnaires that

were distributed have an assurance that whatever results that the researchers taken from

their honest answer on the questionnaires will be taken with confidentiality. After having

been assured that all the distributed questionnaires were already answered, the

researchers had time to review all the answers and analyze it in order to be assured of

having a 100% retrieval rate of all the distributed questionnaires.

Instrumentation

The main source of data used in the study was the survey questionnaire given to

the respondents (see Appendix). The set of survey questionnaire checklist has been

developed by the study in gathering the necessary data from the respondents. The survey

questionnaires were composed of four parts. The first part of the questionnaire had dealt

on the determination of the profile of the respondents, the second part of it focused on the

level of disaster preparedness of the barangay officials and residents, the third part

tackled the common problems experienced by the barangay officials and the residents
40

along the aforesaid variables and lastly the fourth part of it discussed the recommended

solutions to the above variable.

Two kinds of Likert Scale were used. In measuring the Disaster Preparedness of

Barangay Sagpon Daraga, Albay a Likert Scale was used with 1 as not prepared, 2 as

least prepared, 3 as less prepared, 4 as prepared and 5 as well prepared. In question no. 4

of the statement of the problem, a separate Likert Scale was used. The table of equivalent

which is the basis of the interpretation of the data will be:

Scale Quantification Interpretation

5 4.50 – 5.49 Well Prepared

4 3.50 – 4.49 Prepared

3 2.50 – 3.49 Less Prepared

2 1.50 – 2.49 Least Prepared

1 .50 – 1.49 Not Prepared

Statistical Tools

The following statistical tools were used to interpret the gathered data; percentage

and weighted mean.

Percentage

Percentage was used to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of their

age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, occupation and monthly family income

and the type of calamity does Barangay Sagpon is vulnerable to. In order to get the

needed data, the researchers used percentage as the statistical tool. The formula is:

P = f / n x 100
41

Where:

P = percentage

f = number of respondents

n = total number of respondents

100 = constant

Weighted mean

Weighted mean was used to statistically interpret the data on level of

preparedness of the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committee

(BDRRMC) in disaster risk reduction, the common problems experienced by the

residents along the aforesaid variables and lastly the recommended solutions to the above

variable. The formula that was used:

WM = f (w) / n

Where:

WM = weighted mean

f = frequency

w = weight

n = no. of respondents
