Problem solving about force, work, kinetic and potential energy

 Problem solving about Force

1. A net force of 7.5 kN, west acts on a 1208 kg race car.

At what rate will the car accelerate? (a = 6.2 m/s2, west)

2. A car, mass 1485 kg, travelling south at 116 km/h, slows to a stop in 10.25 seconds.
What is the magnitude and direction of the net force that acted on the truck?
(F = 4.67 kN, north)

3. Find the net force acting on a fridge if the applied forces are 378.4 N, west
and 401.3 N, west while the force of friction is 67 N. (FNet = 713 N, west)

4. A large box moving across a floor at constant speed has two people moving it.
One is pushing 236.1 N from behind while the other is pulling 89.3 N from the
front.
What is the force of friction? (Ff = 325.4 N, opposite to the direction of motion)

5. Find the acceleration of a 20.0 kg curling stone if the applied force is 88.7 N, west
and the force of friction is 29.73 N. (a = 2.95 m/s2, west)
 Problem solving about Work

1. Peter can mow the lawn in 40 minutes and John can mow the lawn in 60 minutes.
How long will it take for them to mow the lawn together?

2. It takes Maria 10 hours to pick forty bushels of apples. Kayla can pick the same
amount in 12 hours. How long will it take if they work together? Round your answer
to the nearest hundredths.

3. Jane, Paul and Peter can finish painting the fence in 2 hours. If Jane does the job
alone she can finish it in 5 hours. If Paul does the job alone he can finish it in 6
hours. How long will it take for Peter to finish the job alone?

4. Jim can dig a hole by himself in 12 hours. John can do it in 8 hours and Jack can do
it in 6. How long will it take if they work together?

5. A tank can be filled by pipe A in 3 hours and by pipe B in 5 hours. When the tank is
full, it can be drained by pipe C in 4 hours. if the tank is initially empty and all three
pipes are open, how many hours will it take to fill up the tank?
 Problem solving about Kinetic Energy

1. Determine the kinetic energy of a 625-kg roller coaster car that is moving with a
speed of 18.3 m/s.

2. If the roller coaster car in the above problem were moving with twice the speed, then
what would be its new kinetic energy?

3. Missy Dilter, the former platform diver for the Ringling Brother's Circus, had a kinetic
energy of 12 000 J just prior to hitting the bucket of water. If Missy's mass is 40 kg,
then what is her speed?

4. A 900-kg compact car moving at 60 mi/hr has approximately 320 000 Joules of
kinetic energy. Estimate its new kinetic energy if it is moving at 30 mi/hr.

5. Calculate the kinetic energy of a 10 kg object moving with a speed of 5 m/s.

Calculate the kinetic energy again when the speed is doubled.
 Problem Solving about Potential Energy

1. A box has a mass of 5.8kg. The box is lifted from the garage floor and placed on a
shelf. If the box gains 145J of Potential Energy, how high is the shelf?

2. A man climbs on to a wall that is 3.6m high and gains 2268J of potential energy.
What is the mass of the man?

3. Let us consider a potential energy practice problem : An object of mass 30 kgs is

placed on a hill top of height 80m. What is the potential energy possessed by the
object?

4. A fruit hangs from a tree and is about to fall to the ground of 10 meters height. It has
a potential energy of 22.5 J. Calculate the mass of the fruit

5. 5 kg weighing cat climbing at the top of the tree has a potential energy of 1176 kg.
Find the height of the tree?
