Visitor Guide
The north of Dandenong Ranges National Park covers Doongalla and Olinda sections. The Doongalla
precinct spans the north-western corner and is a popular area for walks and picnics. Here you will find
the historic site of the former Doongalla Homestead which was established in the 1890s. The area
between Olinda, Kalorama and Silvan Reservoir, once formed part of the Olinda State Forest Reserve.
One of the newer sections of the national park, Olinda boasts relatively undisturbed native habitat.
Opening hours
Da ndenong Ranges National Pa rk is open every da y, including
weekends and public holidays.
The Ea gle Nest and Valley picnic grounds close a t 6.00pm during
Da yl ight Saving a nd at 4.00pm at other times of the year. The
Doongalla Homestead Site a nd Stables picnic ground opens at
9.00a m each day. It cl oses at 6.00pm during Daylight Saving a nd at
4.00pm a t other times of the year.
Getting there
The Na tional Pa rk is l ocated about 40km east of Melbourne. From
the ci ty ta ke the Eastern Fwy (M3) and exit onto Boronia Rd.
Conti nue as Boronia Rd merges into Forest Rd, then turn ri ght i nto
Ba sin Olinda Rd and follow it all the way to Olinda. To get to
Doongalla, turn left from Basin Olinda Rd i nto Sheffield Rd a nd ri ght
a ga in into Doongalla Rd.
Al ternatively, for a s cenic toute, enter the park at Ferntree Gully and
ta ke the windy Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd to the top.
Things to see and do
Walking
There are several walking tracks within this precinct that cater for a
ra nge of abilities. Most start from the picnic areas, allowing you to
expl ore the different areas of the park. Don’t forget to keep a n eye
out for the many birds and animals that call the park their home.
Olinda Falls – 1.2km, 30 minutes circuit
Sta rti ng at the Olinda Falls Picnic Ground follow the Falls Tra ck. After
300m, you wi ll come to the top vi ewing platform across Olinda
Creek a s the s teady fl ow of water cascades over the rocks. A further
140 metres leads to the lower vi ewing platform and a small bridge
over the creek.
Retra ce your steps to the top platform and take Mechanics Track.
Thi s walking track meanders through lush thick forest before coming
out on a n unsealed road. Turn ri ght to make your way back to the
ca r pa rk and the picnic area.

Eagle Nest Walk – 3.0km, 1hr circuit
Thi s easy to moderate walk mostly follows wide gentle tracks.
Sta rti ng at Valley Pi cnic Ground, proceed on Boundary Track that
s l opes downhill. Turn right on to Eagle Nest Road which will take
you to Ea gle Nest Picnic Ground. Cross the wooden bridge a nd
fol low Hermons Track to Georges Track. Turn l eft for a short walk
a nd follow Georges Tra ck via Boundary Tra ck back to Valley Picnic
Ground.
Valley Walk – 6.5km, 3.5hrs circuit
Thi s l onger walk is steep and rocky i n sections. Suitable only for
prepared a nd experienced walkers.
Proceed as for Eagle Nest Walk but a fter following Hermons Track to
Georges Track, turn right and follow Georges Track to Barges Road.
Turn l eft a nd follow Barges Road to Predator Track. Continue to turn
l eft, proceeding to Mathias Road, left into Yallambee Way a nd left
to return back to Valley Picnic Ground.
Stables Track Loop – 1.9km, 45 minutes circuit
From the Stables parking area, walk across the picnic ground to find
the beginning of Stables Track. Follow this tra ck until you get to a T
i ntercection, then turn ri ght. There is a short steep climb uphill on
thi s track until it joins Ca melia Track. Turn ri ght a nd continue along
Ca melia track until it reaches the unsealed Doongalla Forest Rd
where you then walk back down to the car park a nd picnic a rea.
Channel 10 Track/ Camelia Loop – 3.6km, 1.5 hour
circuit
Thi s l onger, more challenging walk ta kes you to areas abundant with
wi l dlife, so don’t forget to look around you.
Cha nnel 10 Tra ck starts a t the top of the Doongalla Homestead car
pa rk. Turn l eft i nto Rankin tra ck, then Ca mellia Track that connects
wi th Doongalla Forest Rd, turn right to return to the top car park.
For s pectacular views of Melbourne a nd, on cl ear days, as far as Port
Phi lip Bay a nd the You Yangs, detour vi a Zig Zag Track to Burkes
Lookout.

Doongalla Homestead Site and picnicking
The Doongala Homestead was established i n the 1890s but
des troyed by a bushfire in 1932. The remnant gardens and open
l a wn areas make this a great l ocation for a family picnic.
Approxi mately 700m a way i s the more shaded Stables area which
a l so has picnic facilities.
Both l ocations have picnic ta bles, wood barbecues, car parking and
toi l ets.
There are also three lovely picnic a reas in the Olinda section. Valley
Pi cni c Ground to the south, Eagle Nest Picnic Ground to the east and
Ol i nda Falls Pi cnic Ground to the west, which is the ideal location to
s ta rt your walk to the nearby Ol inda Falls. All have picnic tables and
wood barbecues. Olinda Falls Picnic Ground has toilet facilities.
Bike riding
Bi ke ri ders are welcome to explore the network of cycling tracks
tha t wi nd through the park, i ncluding roads, vehicular tra cks and
‘Ma na gement Vehicle Only’ (MVO) tracks, unless they have been
cl osed to bicycles.
Tra cks closed to cyclists display a ‘No Bikes’ symbol. Any tra ck may
be cl osed to cycl ing at short notice, particularly i f the tra ck
conditions become very muddy, eroded or dangerous.
There are over 10km of dedicated mountain bike trails off Pipleline
tra ck, north of Silvan reservoir park. These cross country tra ils have
been established to specifically ca ter for mountain biking. Trails a re
s ubject to seasonal closures.
Horse riding
Hors e ri ding is popular in the park and there are a number of tracks
where horses are permitted. Silvan Road, Board Track and Ma thias
Roa d, near Silvan Reservoir, are all suitable for horse ri ding.
Flora and fauna
The forest here is dominated by majestic tall trees, such as
Mountain Ash, Manna Gum, Mountain Grey Gum and Messmate.
The mi d-canopy features Soft and Rough Tree Ferns, which provide
protection for delicate fern species within the ground cover, s uch as
the Common Maidenhair, Common Rasp Fern and King Fern.
Keep a n eye out for the local wildlife as you walk. You might spot a n
echi dna or a wallaby. Many native birds also frequent the area.
La ughing Kookaburras, Crimson and Eastern Rosellas, Ki ng Parrots
a nd Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos are all common. If you are l ucky
you ma y ca tch a glimpse of Superb Lyrebird darting through the
dense understorey.
Be prepared and stay safe
The Da ndenong Ranges National Park is closed when there is a
SEVERE Fi re Danger Rating at local Ferny Creek or Coldstream
wea ther s tations or if there are strong winds.
Da ndenong Ranges National Pa rk is i n the Central fire district.
Bus hfire safety i s a personal responsibility. Anyone entering parks
a nd forests during the bushfire season needs to stay a ware of
forecast weather conditions. Check the Fire Danger Rating and for
da ys of Total Fire Ban a t www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call the
Vi cEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226. No fi res may be lit on Total
Fi re Ban days. On Code Red Fire Danger Rating days this park will be
cl osed for public safety. Cl osure signs will be erected but do not
expect an official warning. Check the latest conditions at
www.parks.vic.gov.au or by calling 13 1963. For emergency
a s sistance call Triple Zero (000). If there is a green emergency
ma rker sign near you, read the information on the marker to the
operator.
