Il significato dei phrasal verbs non è sempre dato dalla semplice somma o abbinamento dei due
singoli significati.

We ran out of petrol.
Run = correre, out = fuori ma run out = esaurirsi
La stessa combinazione di verbo + preposizione / particella può anche avere significati diversi
secondo il contesto:
Don’t keep putting off our meeting. (rimandare)
I’m taking that shot again – you put me off! (distrarre)
The smell of the food really put me off. (scoraggiare, far passare la voglia)
I phrasal verbs sono più comuni nella lingua informale e spesso posseggono un’equivalente costituito
da una singola parola nell’inglese formale.
I found out that he was Italian, too. = I discovered that he was Italian, too.
He picked you out from the crowd. = He selected you from the crowd.

informale e una più efficace produzione e comprensione orale.
La tabella sottostante riporta alcuni phrasal verbs comuni divisi per tipologia. Può essere anche utile
dividerli per verbo (get + on / off / up / up to / over / into / away) oppure per particella / preposizione
