EXPERIMENT 1.

2 : THE EFFECT OF CONCENTRATION ON THE RATE OF

REACTION
Iron gate of houses in industrial area will corrode faster than those in rural area. Industrial
activities will release higher concentration of acidic gases dissolve in acid rain which will
cause acid rain.

By preparing three different concentrations solutions of sodium thiosulphate, Na2S2O3 and

sulphuric acid, H2SO4, conduct an experiment to investigate how the concentration of
solutions can effects the rate of reaction.
Your report should include the following aspects:

 Title
 Aim
 Problem Statement
 Variables
(i) Manipulated Variable
(ii) Responding Variable
(iii) Constant Variable
 Hypothesis
 Apparatus and Materials
 Diagram
 Procedure
 Results
 Analysis and Interpreting Data
 Conclusion

In your report, the questions can be used as discussion reference.

1. Plot graph of concentration of sodium thiosulphate solution used against, 1/time on

the graph paper provided.

2. State the relationship between the value of 1/time and the rate of reaction

3. Write the chemical equation for the reaction between sodium thiosulphate solution
and sulphuric acid.

4. Predict the concentration of the sodium thiosulphate solution for the time 20 s.
While conducting experiment, student will be evaluated based on:
1. Manipulative skills (example how to handle apparatus during experiment)
2. Scientific values (example cleaning and keeping the apparatus after conducting
experiment) and noble values (example cooperation, honest etc)

ANSWER
1. In this experiment you are required to determine the effect of concentration on the rate of
reaction.
You are provided with:
 0.18 moldm-3 Sodium thiosulphate, Na2S2O3 solution, R1
 0.14 moldm-3 Sodium thiosulphate, Na2S2O3 solution, R2
 0.12 moldm-3 Sodium thiosulphate, Na2S2O3 solution, R3
 1.0 moldm-3 Sulphuric acid, H2SO4
 Distilled water
 A piece of white paper marked ‘X’ at the centre

By using a measuring cylinder, measure 45.0cm 3 of 0.18 moldm-3 sodium thiosulphate,

Na2S2O3 solution and pour it into a conical flask. Place the conical flask on top a piece of white
paper marked ‘X’ at the centre. Measure 5.0 cm 3 of 1.0 moldm-3 sulphuric acid, H2SO4 using
another measuring cylinder. Pour the sulphuric acid, H 2SO4 quickly and carefully into the
conical flask. At the same time start a stopwatch. Swirl the mixture in the conical flask.
Observe the ‘X’ mark on the piece of white paper vertically from the top of the conical flask .
Stop the stopwatch once the ‘X’ mark disappears from view. Record the time taken.

Repeat the experiment twice using , R2 and R3.

Construct a table to record the time and the rate of reaction (1/Time) for the different
concentrations of sodium thiosulphate solution .

Answer Scheme
Based on the experiment:

a) Plot a graph of concentration of sodium thiosulphate Na2S2O3 solution used against,

1/time on the graph paper provided

Experiment 1 2 3
Concentration of R1 R2 R3
Sodium Thiosulphate
solution
Time taken (s) 16 27 41
1/Time (s-1) 0.063 0.037 0.024

b) State the relationship between the value of 1/time and the rate of reaction. (2 marks)
1/time is directly proportional to the rate of reaction.

c) Write the chemical equation for the reaction between sodium thiosulphate Na2S2O3
solutionan and sulphuric acid.
(2 marks)
Na2S2O3 + H2SO4 Na2SO4 + S + SO2 + H2O

f) Predict the concentration of the sodium thiosulphate Na2S2O3 solution for the time
20s.
