Praxis Core Exam Analysis

College of Southern Nevada

Exam Requirements: If anyone desires to pursue a career in the education field, it is

mandated by the state of Nevada for official teaching certification that the Praxis Core exams be

taken and passed. These Praxis Core Exams consist of three sections, writing, reading, and math.

Not only is this a certification requirement but also an educational requirement, since

Universities limit their students on class options by not allowing them to further advance in their

major until they have successfully completed these Praxis exams. The passing scores for the

Praxis Core Exam are as follows: 162 for writing, 156 for reading, and 150 for math.

Exam Preparation: To prepare to take the Praxis Core Exam, I have read the exam

guides, read about the test structure and supplies needed, studied using Khaun Academy, and

then have taken the practice tests. That being said, I did not prepare for these practice Praxis tests

even close to a fraction of what I would have liked to.

Exam Results: My results were as follows, 75% for writing overall, showing that I am at

the borderline level. I received 27% for “Text Types, Purpose and Production” because I did not

write any essays as is required. The program stated that “Substantial Improvement needed”. I

received 75% for “Language and Research Skills for Writing” but that is still considered

“borderline” to passing or failing, which means I have to study harder.

For Math, I received 49% overall and merited 52% for the category “Numbers and

Quantity”, 41% for “Algebra and Functions”, 54% for “Geometry”, and 45% for “Statistics and

Probability”. The program concluded, “Improvement needed”.

For reading, I received a total of 45%. For the category “Key Ideas and Details” I earned

31%, stating “substantial Improvement needed”. In the category “Craft, Structure and Language

Skills” I received 55% and the program stated, “Improvement needed”. Lastly in the category

“Integration of Knowledge and Ideas,” I merited 47% showing, “Improvement needed”.

Future Exam Preparation: In order to pass the Praxis Core Exam, I plan to prepare by

meeting with a tutor, going into Khaun Academy, studying the study guides, and reading a book

about the tests. I may also use Ed Ready.
