N2 EFFECT OF TRANSFORMERS

1
Simple Example of N2 Effect
Rp Ip Is

Ug Up Us Rs

• Calculate Is for a 80/40 V ideal single-phase transformer with a 80 V source with Rp = 8

Ω and Rs = 8 Ω
• There are several methods of doing the above exercise:
 Ohm's law and transformer action - Can also be called Kirchoff’s loop voltage law,
i.e. the sum of the voltages in a loop is zero
 N2 effect
 Iterative or trial-and-error – only as a last resort
 Per unit system, which will have an inherent N2 factor
 Thevenin's equivalent circuit 2
