*State the Objectives (grade-level terms)

1. I can add fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators.

2. I can subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators.

mins
1. Students will be divided into groups of 3 or 4. Students may be grouped by mixed
ability so that higher students can help those who are lower. In their groups, students
will be given problems for adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with
both like and unlike denominators. This is a new concept for students, but the goal is
for them to use collaborative learning and prior knowledge to help them determine
how they can solve the problems. Each group will be provided manipulatives (Legos)
to assist them in working out problems as well as giant poster paper to write
problems on.

2. To begin, TSW be given a relatively simple problem for fractions with like
denominators. For example, 5/8 + 2/8. TSW use markers and/or pencils to work out
problems together on the giant poster paper. Once groups have worked together to
solve the problem, TTW model how to correctly solve the problem using the
Promethean board. The class will discuss strategies and rules necessary to solve
the problem. This will be repeated after every problem.

3. Students will continue to solve problems with different operations and

denominators. Other problems given may include:
 2/3 - 3/6
 6/8 - 1/4
 1 1/4 + 2/4
 2 5/8 - 1 1/4
 1 2/10 + 1 3/5

Prior to this activity, students have learned how to find common denominators for
two unlike fractions. They should use that knowledge when solving these problems.
Problems will increase in difficulty as students are able to solve them. Students will
also be taught how to simply fractions as they go along.

*Modeling

After all groups have completed each problem, TTW use the Promethean board to
demonstrate how to correctly solve each problem. TTW discuss strategies and rules
necessary for each problem.

*Check for Understanding

As students are working with their groups, the teacher may walk around to check on
student progress and assist students if necessary. TTW question students on what
strategies they are using to find their answers.

5 mins *Closure

As a class, students will discuss what they have learned about the rules of adding
and subtracting fractions. This includes never adding or subtracting denominators,
finding common denominators for unlike fractions and mixed numbers, simplifying
fractions when necessary, etc. TTW create an anchor chart of their findings to hang
in the classroom for future reference.

Classroom Management Issues (optional)

This lesson is done in small groups in order to make collaborative learning more effective and
easier to accomplish.

Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)? What
part of the lesson would you change? Why?

Next time I may try the activity with slightly smaller groups (of 3 instead of 4) so that all
students are able to have a chance to write out the problems on the poster paper and use the
manipulatives. Overall, students enjoyed the activity and the majority of groups worked well
together and were able to solve the problems.
