What is an Expo?
Expos are large-scale, global events organized and facilitated by governments that
serve to educate the public, share innovation, promote progress and foster cooperation.
Since the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, Expos have been a showcase of
innovation and inspiration to humankind and are today unrivalled among international
events in their size, scale, length and visitor numbers.
In the modern era, Expos have evolved into platforms for education and progress,
inspiring and connecting the actions of governments and civil society in their common
endeavor to face global challenges with the available resources. The pursuit of a better
quality of life for all citizens is at the core of the educational mission of Expos, and this is
now showcased through innovation based on solutions and best practices rather than
materials and products.1

Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition that Milan, Italy, is hosting from May 1 to October 31,
2015. Over this six-month period, Milan becomes a global showcase where more than 140 participating
countries show the best of their technology that offers a concrete answer to a vital need: being able to
guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium.
In addition to the exhibitor nations, the Expo also involves international organizations, and expects to
welcome over 20 million visitors to its 1.1 million square meters of exhibition area.
A platform for the exchange of ideas and shared solutions on the theme of food, stimulating each
country’s creativity and promoting innovation for a sustainable future, Expo 2015 gives everyone the
opportunity to find out about, and taste, the world’s best dishes, while discovering the best of the agri-
food and gastronomic traditions of each of the exhibitor countries.
Expo Milano 2015 provides an opportunity to reflect upon, and seek solutions to, the
contradictions of our world. On the one hand, there are still the hungry (approximately 870
million people were undernourished in the period 2010-2012) and, on the other, there are those
who die from ailments linked to poor nutrition or too much food (approximately 2.8 million
deaths from diseases related to obesity or to being overweight in the same period). In addition,
about 1.3 billion tons of foods are wasted every year. For these reasons, we need to make
conscious political choices, develop sustainable lifestyles, and use the best technology to create a
balance between the availability and the consumption of resources.
Reflection on the Expo theme becomes a time of sharing and celebration, involving conferences,
events and performances, enhanced by the presence of the mascot Foody and the cheery
characters who accompany him. Every aspect and every moment of, as well as every participant
at, Expo Milano 2015 define and move forward the chosen theme: Feeding the Planet, Energy
for Life.
For the countries that chose not to have their own pavilions, Expo Milan 2015 has created an
innovative mode of participation: the Cluster. These exhibition spaces bring together countries
that all produce, or have a relationship with, a specific food. The nine Clusters are spread over a
total area of 36,650 square meters
They are:
Rice
Cocoa and Chocolate
Coffee
Fruits and Legumes
Spices
Cereals and Tubers
Bio-Mediterraneum
Islands, Sea and Food
Arid Zones
Expo Milano 2015 examines human history through the lens of two aspects of food production
and traditional cultural values and the use of new technologies. These two aspects do not stand
apart, but are very much interconnected. Besides being an opportunity for industry players to
meet, the Universal Exposition is part of a cultural journey that aims to highlight
the changes that the entire population of the planet is currently facing.
Expo Gate: Milan’s gateway to the Expo
Situated in the heart of Milan, right in front of the Castello Sforzesco, Expo Gate introduces the
public to Expo Milano 2015, forming a bridge between the city and the exhibition site. Since May
2014, Expo Gate has been the stage on which Milan interprets the central theme of Expo
Milano 2015: Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. Open to visitors and residents alike, Expo
Gate offers a light-filled place to meet, learn and share ideas. Expo Gate was created by the
Scandurra Studio and consists of two modular and transparent buildings with a light form,
designed for minimal impact on the environment.
Participants
As defined by the rules of the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions), Participants in the
Universal Exposition are identified as Official or Non-Official. Official Participants are
all Countries (145) and International Organizations (3) who accept the invitation sent by the
Government of the Country hosting the Exposition. Non-Official Participants may be a group
of representatives, institutional and otherwise, whose participation is authorized directly by the
Organizer of every single Exposition.
Working together, but with different methods and objectives, all participants will be called upon
to interpret and make a real contribution to the theme of Expo 2015, Feeding the Planet,
Energy for Life. The aim is to create a unique experience for visitors, as protagonists, increasing
their awareness of and seeking their participation in the drive for:

Energy)* initiative aims not only to increase public awareness of the extent and
consequences of the exclusion of a large share of the world’s population from
energy access, but also to highlight experiences focusing on this problem.

area at the easteV end of the Decumano, alongside the Mediterranean Hill. This is
an area of 3,500 square meters consisting of three modular buildings reminiscent
of the rural Lombard farmsteads and was designed by Herzog & De Meuron.

Shanghai world expo 2010:
Data:
Visitors: 73,085000

World exposition in Shanghai, China, ran between May 1 and October 31, 2010.
It was one of the largest world fairs or expositions ever mounted, it also was the
most heavily attended of any such events.4
The site chosen in the city to hold the expo was situated on both sides of the
Huangpu River in the southern part of central Shanghai and occupied a total of
about 2 square miles (about 5.3 square km). 5
Among the notable projects completed were those that added new lines to
the Shanghai Metro (light rail) system (including a spur to the expo site) and
extended existing lines; expanded terminal capacity at both of the city’s
international airports; and undertook major road improvements, including a new
double-deck bridge over the Huangpu River and a new tunnel under the river
leading to the Pudong site.6
The theme chosen by the event’s organizers was “Better City, Better Life,” which
signified the increasingly important role of urbanization in the 21st century and
also highlighted and promoted Shanghai as one of the world’s great

metropolises. Various aspects of urban life, urbanization’s impact already on the
Earth, and urbanization into the future were explored in five “theme” pavilions. In
addition, a portion of the Puxi site was designated the Urban Best Practices
Area, where different cities could display various innovations in such fields as
housing and science and technology to improve urban life and environmental
quality.7
Projects:
Situated adjacent to the Expo Axis were the other main structures of
the exposition. Most prominent among these were the Chinese
pavilion complex, just to the west, topped by a red cantilevered roof
that evoked the classic Chinese bracket (dougong) construction style;
and a large new multipurpose Culture Center, built just to the northwest
along the riverbank. The other two main buildings, located on the east
side of the Expo Axis, were the Expo Center, a multiple-use venue, and
the Theme Pavilion structure, which housed three of the five theme
pavilions. 8

Visitors:
Expo Shanghai 2010 drew some 73 million visitors—the great bulk of them
Chinese in its six-month run, a record attendance figure that eclipsed the 64
million who visited Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan, in 1970. In addition, the 2010 event
established a single-day record of 1.03 million visitors on October 16. Expo Axis,
China’s pavilion, the Culture Center (subsequently renamed the Mercedes-Benz
Arena), the Expo Center, and the Theme Pavilion were designed to be
permanent, while the rest of the buildings were temporary structures for the
duration of the exposition and were dismantled after it closed at the end of
October.9
