IS:456-2000 is the Indian Standard Code for plain and reinforced concrete.

This write up will

give you an overview and main points in the code, these points can be used in all competitive
examination (of course you should read it once for further details), this write up is only
comprehensional and it is assumed that reader is well versed with standard design parameters,
notation and practices.

mportant Points to Remember Practical Things
1. The minimum thickness of the slab is five inches.

2. Water absorption should not be more than 20 % in brick and not more than 5 % in stones.
3.Dimension tolerance for cubes +
– 2 mm
3. Lapping is not allowed for the bars having diameters more than 36 mm, it is then welded.
4. 5.

Chair spacing maximum spacing is 1.00 m (or) 1 No per 1m

2
.6.

For dowels rod minimum of 12 mm diameter should be used.7.

Chairs minimum of 12 mm diameter bars to be used.8.

Longitudinal reinforcement not less than 0.8% and more than 6% of gross C/S.9.

Minimum bars for square column is 4 No’s and 6 No’s for circular column.
10.

Main bars in the slabs shall not be less than 8 mm (HYSD) or 10 mm (Plain bars) and thedistributors not less than 8
mm and not more than 1/8 of slab thickness.11.

The minimum thickness of the slab is 125 mm.12.

Free fall of concrete is allowed maximum to 1.50m, because it causes segregation inconcrete.13.

PH value of the water should not be less than 6 and not greater than 8.5.14.

Compressive strength of Bricks is 3.5 N / mm15.

In steel reinforcement, binding wire required is 8 kg per MT.16.

In soil filling as per IS code, 3 samples should be taken for core cutting test for every100m
2
.17.

In soil filling as per IS code for every 100 sqm, 3 sample for core cutting test should betaken.18.

Electrical conduits shall not run in the column.19.

Earth work excavation for basement above 3 m should be stepped form.20.

Any backfilling shall be compacted 95% of dry density at the optimum moisture contentand in layers not more
than 200mm for filling above structure and 300 mm for nostructure.21.

Soling is specified the soling stones shall be laid at 45° to 60° inclination (and notvertical) with interstices filled with
