Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Understanding the Equal Sign

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): Grade 1
Content Standard Addressed:
- MGSE1.OA.7 Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving
addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and
which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 – 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.
- MGSE1.OA.8 Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating
to three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true
in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = □ – 3, 6 + 6 = ∆.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1. Empowered Learner

Selected Technology Tool:

☒Socrative ☐iRespond ☐Quizlet ☐Plickers ☐Kahoot! ☐Office365 Forms

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: This student response technology tools provides students with options for sustaining effort and
persistence. The quiz provided on Socrative provides different types of questions to optimize challenge.
Representation: The SRT activity provides options for comprehension. It sticks to a set pattern of multiple
choice and true or false questions.
Action and Expression: The SRT activity is teacher-paced, allowing the teacher to provide options for
executive options. The teacher is able to facilitate information and monitor progress.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the activity, students will review adding and subtracting numbers up to 20. Once they have reviewed,
the teacher will pose the question of what students think the equal sign means. Then, they will take the quiz
to assess what they know.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒Assess prior knowledge ☐Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐Test preparation
☐Survey/Poll ☐Discussion starter ☐“Homework” collection ☐Other (please explain):

Student Response and Assessment Tools

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: During the SRT activity the students will
complete the quiz at their own pace, while the teacher monitors their progress. The students will need access
to tablets, while teachers have access to a computer to open up the quiz and monitor the students. The
teacher will allot 20 minutes to complete the quiz.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐Multiple select ☒True/False ☐Yes/No
☐Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒Yes ☐No
☐Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will pre-select correct answers to all of the questions so that the teacher can determine how many students
are familiar with the topic or not based on their number of correct answers.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity, the teacher will further elaborate on what the quiz consisted of. The teacher will
introduce a lesson on understanding the equal sign and equations. Once the lesson is complete, the teacher
will go allow the students to take the quiz for a second time.
How will the data be used? As a result of this activity, the teacher will collect data on how well the students
did on the first quiz compared to the second quiz. The teacher will look at the results from the first time the
students took the quiz and then compare it to the second quiz to determine if there are still concepts that
need to be further explained and to determine how much the students learned.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I am creating quizzes for the first time and formulating
my own questions that I hope help students grasp the concept of the equation sign.

Reflective Practice: The SRT activity I created can be paired with my equations lesson created on Nearpod.
The two can support one another to help support students’ understanding of equations. Both the Nearpod
activity and the quiz provide students with a substantial amount of exposure to equations and practice with
the concepts in this mathematical standard.
