YOUR BRAND
IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS
The guide to refining
your visual branding in
less than five hours
WELCOME

asdf
Why is your visual brand so
important?
We believe that your visual brand is your promise to your
potential customer or client. The branding elements displayed on your
website and social media platforms (i.e. logo, colors,
typography, photos), are very likely the first encounter an
individual has with your business. This means that branding DESERVES
your attention.

In this guide, we’re going to breakdown refreshing your brand into 5

easy-to-complete steps. By taking 1 hour per day to follow this guide, you
will have a completely refreshed brand in less than a week.

INDEX
We recommend taking about one hour per day to
complete each of these steps. This will ensure your
creativity and energy stay fresh throughout the process.

DAY ONE
REFRESH

Your social media platforms have most likely been with you from the very beginning of your business, or
even since you used them as a personal profile.
Think about how much you and your business have grown and changed since you began; chances are
good that some of your social media posts from a few years or even a few months ago aren’t relevant to
where you are now.
It’s time to take a look at your feeds and get rid of any content that is no longer serving your business or
representing you are and what you do now.

Take Action
1. Go through your Facebook page and delete or hide any photos, posts, videos, or services, that are not
relevant to your current offerings, or aesthetic.

2. Pull up your Instagram feed and delete any photos that really stick out or don’t represent who you are
or what you do (especially graphics, text, or photos that don’t blend well with your current business
aesthetic).

*Don’t start creating new content or change your profile pictures just yet -- this will come later.

Be careful not to fall into a negative mindset about your social media! This
step is not deleting all of your content and starting from scratch; it’s getting
rid of content that no longer serves you. Don’t focus on having a perfect
feed, focus on having social media platforms that represent you and your
business.

DAY TWO
REFINE

You don’t have to be a professional graphic designer to establish trust through your branding. You do,
however, need to be consistent.

At Foxtrot, we always say that “consistency is key when it comes to your brand strategy.” Using the same
brand colors and typography across all of your platforms makes a huge impact on your audience’s ability
to recognize your brand.

Take Action
1. Choose your brand’s official color palette of 3-5 colors and save them in a Google Doc with their HEX,
RGB, and CMYK color codes for easy access. Coolors.com or encycolorpedia.com are great for finding
colors and their corresponding codes, and you can even pick colors from photos.

2. Choose your brand’s official fonts (2-3 maximum). Ensure that you choose fonts that are compatible
with the editing software you most commonly use (Canva, Adobe Illustrator, etc).

Quick tip: Canva even lets you save brand fonts and colors, so take advantage of that feature if you use
Canva.

Lost on where to start with picking a color palette? Try searching Google or
Pinterest for photography or color palette examples, and save any photos with
colors that you like. By saving a lot of photos you like, you can learn quickly
which colors your eye is naturally drawn to. On coolors.com, you can upload
photos to manually pick colors from, or it can also generate a color palette for
you from the colors in the image.

DAY THREE
EDIT

It’s time to take a long, hard look at your logo and think about if it reflects who you are as a business
and whether it will take you where you want to go.

Your logo is what your audience will recognize you by, and it communicates SO much about your
business: whether you are professional and trustworthy, or sloppy and careless.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

•Am I proud of my logo?
•Does my logo tell people what I do?
•Does my logo look professional?
•Does my logo match the new colors and fonts I’ve picked out?

Take Action
1. If you designed your own logo, edit the file to match your current colors, fonts, and overall
aesthetic, or contact your designer who can make those updates for you.

2. If you feel like your current logo concept just doesn’t match who you are anymore, hire a graphic
designer to help you create something fresh and professional that you will be proud of for years to come.

Your logo should have 3 clear parts: an icon, your business name, and a tagline/
strapline. Your icon can be simple imagery that is either literal or abstract and reflects
something about your brand. The fonts used in your logo should represent the type
of brand you have. Your tagline should tell people what your business does. If your
logo doesn’t have these parts, look into having a new logo design made.

DAY FOUR
UPDATE

In order for people to trust your business, they need to know and trust YOU. Seeing pictures of your
product online is great, but it’s nothing compared to seeing you make or use your product/service. We’re
not kidding when we say that pictures of ourselves perform upwards of 30% better on Instagram than
other types of photos.
If your profile picture is over 1 year old and you can’t remember the last time you posted a photo of
yourself it’s TIME to update. Your customers and clients need to see you so they can trust you.

Take Action
1. Take a new headshot with your phone or camera. Avoid the selfie style by either using a tripod or
grabbing a friend to help you out. You can even make a photoshoot out of it, taking photos of each
other pretending to work and doing lots of poses!

2. Or, hire a professional photographer to take some headshots and brand photos that you can use
online for months to come. So many photographers now offer brand photography.

Foxtrot offers brand photography and headshots sessions within Tennessee! Click here for more information.

We completely understand how stressful taking photos of yourself can be. Here are
some tips that will make the experience better!

•Don’t forget self-care! Spend some time on your hair and makeup to make the
experience feel special.
•Lighting is EVERYTHING. Always face a window or take the photo in soft outdoor
lighting (avoid harsh sunlight and shadowy areas).
•If you’re not used to editing photos, just add a bit of brightness and contrast, or
purchase a Lightroom preset that you love! Cassidy

DAY FIVE
FINALIZE

When people visit your Instagram profile, Facebook page, and website, they should feel like they have a
cohesive sense of who you are and what you do.

Your refreshed and refined branding elements will make you look more professional and trustworthy to
anyone visiting your platforms! It’s time to put all of these elements together and do a big update.

Take Action
1. Update your Facebook profile picture to your logo and change your cover photo to a photo of you, your
product/service, or better yet a photo with that includes both.

2. Update your Instagram profile to either your logo or a new photo of yourself and create 3-5 new posts
that are graphics or photos that reflect your new colors, fonts, and photos.

3. If you have a website, make sure you update its aesthetics to reflect your refreshed branding as well.

4. Don’t forget any marketing and print materials you have: those should match your refreshed branding.

“Your personal brand is a promise to your clients… a promise of quality,

consistency, competency, and reliability.”
