Mrs. Susi Pudjiastuti

Mrs. Susi Pudjiastuti is better known as Pudjiastuti, she was born on 15

January 1965 in Pangandaran. Her father was Haji Ahmad Karlan and her
mother was Hajjah Suwuh Lasminah, both of whom come from Central Java,
but it’s been five generations living in Pangandaran.

Following junior high school, Pudjiastuti continued senior high school at

SMA Negeri 1 Yogyakarta, but did not complete her studies after she was
expelled for political activism in the Golput (Golongan Putih, or absenteeism in
protest of Golkar rule) movement, which was banned under then President
Suharto’s New Order. Pudjiastuti is the first Indonesian minister to have never
completed a high school education.

In 1983 Pudjiastuti embarked on a career as an entrepreneur, starting as

a seafood distributor at a Fish Auction Facility (TPI) in Pangandaran. Her
distributorship evolved into a seafood processing plant in 1996 named PT ASI
Pudjiastuti Marine Product which specialized in export-
quality lobsters packaged as “Susi Brand.” PT ASI Pudjiastuti Marine Product
expanded and began exporting its products to Asia and America.

The growing demand for PT ASI Pudjiastuti Marine Product’s fresh seafood
lead to rapid air transport as a necessity for the business. In 2004, she acquired
a Cessna 208 Caravan and established PT ASI Pudjiastuti Aviation.
The Cessna was given the call-sign “Susi Air” and was used to transport fresh
Indonesian seafood to Jakarta as well as overseas to Singapore, Hong Kong,
and Japan.

During the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami which

devastated Aceh and the west coast of Sumatra, Susi Air was one of the first
responders which distributed food and supplies to victims in isolated areas of
the disaster. The revenues earned from the NGO Aceh missions enabled Susi Air
to acquire new airplanes and expand its fleet to routes in Papua and Kalimantan.
Susi Air is now the largest operator of Cessna Grand Caravans in the Asia Pacific
region.

On 26 October 2014, President Joko Widodo appointed Pudjiastuti as the

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries under his 2014-2019 working cabinet.
Prior to accepting her appointment, Pudjiastuti relinquished her position as the
President Director of PT ASI Pudjiastuti Marine Product and PT ASI Pudjiastuti
Aviation.
 On 16 September 2016, WWF awarded her the Leaders for a Living Planet
Award. This is in recognition of her efforts as Ministry of Marine Affairs and
Fisheries in promoting sustainable development in the Indonesian fisheries
sector and conservation of the marine ecosystem, as well as her fierce crackdown
on illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.

Out of the many awards she has received, to name a few, she was given the
following: Award for Tourism Pioneer; by West Java Department of Culture and
Tourism. 2004, Inspiring Woman for Development Motivator; by Governor of
West Java. 2008, Award For Innovative Achievements, Extraordinary Leadership
and Significant Contributions to the Economy at Women and Economy Summit
(WES), USA; by APEC. 201, People of The Year 2013; by MNC Group
Newspaper (Koran Sindo). 2014, Person of The Year 2014; by Warga Kota Solo.
2015, First Women to be Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries; by
Indonesian Record Museum (MURI). 2015, The BBC 100 Women. 2017, Srikandi

Mrs. Susi Pudjiastuti’s hobby is eradicating the practice of illegal fishing, the
Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti also has other fun
activities. her said she really likes maps since childhood. Not surprisingly, in her
private residence in the Pangandaran area, West Java, Pudjiastuti has 200 maps.
Even when she first served as a minister, she was confused because there was no
map provided in his office. Even though the map is very important to be a
supporter of the main task of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries as
the supervisor and manager of the Indonesian sea area.

While behind the controversy, she is an assertive figure such as her firm
decision to eradicate illegal fishing which often occurs in the territorial waters of
the archipelago as well as her efforts to improve the welfare of fishermen.
 In addition, she is also very good at speaking English, something that is not
commonly owned by the Indonesian minister. For this action, she gets good
praise and criticism on social media.

Snoring Sound

When I was Junior high school, I lived in Islamic Boarding School in Nurul
Ulum Peureulak, East Aceh. I have a close friend, her name is Nurul Wahidatullah.
In our room there were 3 single beds, previously only slept by 2 people, I was in the
left bad, and Nurul in the middle bed. She often snores while sleeping. At the first
time, I was very annoyed to hear his snoring. But over time, I was able to adjust.

One day, there was a new student, she was from northern Aceh, and her name
was Mutia. My bed position changed, Nurul slept on the left, I was in the middle,
and Mutia on the right. Why did I choose a position like that? I was afraid she is not
comfortable with Nurul’s snoring sound. So I was beside her.

When the first night Mutia in my room, before going to bed, the three of us
told stories to each other. Night began to dissolve. We also slept in each position.
That night was very strange and uncomfortable. I can't sleep at all. There was a
sound that makes me unable to sleep. Oh God..... They snored together and that
really bothered me. I have been wrong to take a sleep position.

That morning, I was late. They have waked me up. And I said: "Now your
snoring sounds are stereo, it sounds a lot more harmonious than before, hehe ..."the
three of us laughed out loud. I feel annoyed and funny to hear their snoring.
