the Reverend Doctor Timothy Gaden

as Senior Chaplain

The Feast of the Presentation

of Christ in the Temple

Officiant and Preacher:

The Right Reverend Garry Weatherill
Bishop of Ballarat

31st January, 2019

INTRODUCTORY RITE

Processional Hymn [stand]

Let us build a house where love can dwell
And all can safely live
A place where saints and children tell
How hearts lean to forgive.
Built of hopes and dreams and visions
Rock of faith and vault of grace,
Here the love of Christ shall end divisions:
All are welcome, all are welcome,
All are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak

And words are strong and true,
Where all God’s children dare to seek
To dream God’s reign anew.
Here the cross shall stand as witness
And as symbol of God’s grace,
Here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:

Let us build a house where hands shall reach

Beyond the wood and stone
To heal and strengthen, serve and teach
And live the Word they’ve known.
Here the outcast and the stranger
Bear the image of God’s face
Let us bring an end to fear and danger:

Let us build a house where all are named

Their songs and visions heard
And loved and treasured, taught and claimed
As words within the Word.
Built of tears and cries and laughter,
Prayers of faith and songs of grace,
Let this house proclaim from floor to rafter:

Let us build a house where all are named

As His, and called to be
Christ’s Church: one body, cherishing all,
Glad of diversity.
Here with hearts and minds on fire,
And integrity embraced,
Hopes for earth are kindled ‘neath our spire:

Words and music by Marty Haugen (1950 - )

Arranged with permission by Richard Treloar (1965-)
Bishop: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen

Bishop: Peace be with you

All: And also with you

Bishop: We gather with great rejoicing this day to welcome to the School the
Reverend Doctor Timothy Gaden, and to commission him as Senior
Chaplain of our School. We recognise his calling by God to this
ministry, and we pray that his time here may be a blessing to us and to
him. We shall also pray that our Chaplaincy team may minister
faithfully to God’s people here, to their benefit, and to the greater glory
of God.

So let us pray that God will bless us with his presence among us today:

Almighty and Eternal God, you call each one of us to lives of service,
and the proclamation of your truth: send down upon us all, and
especially upon Tim, the gift of your Holy Spirit, that as we commission
him for his ministry here, he may be empowered to work faithfully in
your name and to your glory. We make this prayer in the name of
Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lived and died as one of us, and
who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and forever.
All: Amen

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Old Testament Reading: Malachi 3.1-4 [sit]

Read by Dr Shantini Deutscher, Chair of the Board of Directors

“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the
Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom
you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty.
But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For
he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier
of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD
will have people who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings of Judah
and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former
years.

Reader: This is the word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

Hymn [stand]
We limit not the truth of God
To our poor reach of mind
By notions of our day and sect
Crude, partial and confined:
No, let a new and better hope
within our hearts be stirred:
the Lord has yet more light and truth
to break forth from his word.

Our faithful forebears searching went

The first steps of the way
This was the dawning, yet to grow
Into the perfect day.
And grow it shall, our gracious sun
Will brighter rays afford:
The Lord has yet more light and truth
To break forth from his word.

O Father, Son and Spirit, send

Us increase from above
Enlarge, expand all living souls
To comprehend your love.
And make us all go on to know
With nobler powers conferred:
The Lord has yet more light and truth
Ro break forth from his word.

Gospel: Luke 2. 31-40

Read by Rev’d Canon Peter Treloar, Assistant Chaplain
Reader: The Lord be with you
All: And also with you
Reader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke
All: Glory to you, Lord Christ

When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph
and Mary took Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the
Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer
a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two
young pigeons.”
Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.
He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had
been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the
Lord’s Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the
parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law
required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss your servant in peace
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”
The child’s father and mother marvelled at what was said about him. Then Simeon
blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the
falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so
that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own
soul too.”
There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She
was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and
then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped
night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she
gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the
redemption of Jerusalem.
When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they
returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became
strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

THE LICENSING AND COMMISSIONING OF THE CHAPLAIN

The Presentation
The Headmaster presents Tim to the Bishop with these words:

Headmaster: Right Reverend Father in God, I present to you the Reverend Doctor
Timothy Gaden to be licensed and commissioned for the pastoral care
of souls in this School.

Reaffirmation of Discipleship
The Bishop addresses the people of the School community:

Bishop: My brothers and sisters, you are the Body of Christ in this place, and
together with Tim, you will continue Christ’s work here. I call on you
now to join with your new pastor in reaffirming your discipleship and
making the profession of faith which you made when you were
baptised and confirmed.

The congregation stands and answers with their new priest:

Bishop: Do you believe and trust in God the Father, the creator of all?
All: We believe and trust in him.

Bishop: Do you believe and trust in Jesus Christ, the redeemer of the world?
All: We believe and trust in him.

Bishop: Do you believe and trust in his Holy Spirit, the giver of life?
All: We believe and trust in him.

Bishop: This is the faith of the Church.

All: This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and
Holy Spirit.
Reaffirmation of Ordination Vows
The people are seated.

Bishop: Tim, before you receive this share in our pastoral charge, I call on you
before God and this congregation to reaffirm the promises you made
when you were ordained, and accepted the priesthood out of love for
the Lord Jesus and his Church.

Are you resolved to unite yourself more closely to him by being diligent
in prayer, and study of the Holy Scripture, and continually stirring up
the gift of God that is in you to make Christ known to all?
Tim: By the grace of God, I will.

Bishop: Are you resolved to be a faithful servant of the mysteries of God, to

celebrate with devotion the Eucharist and the other liturgies of word
and sacrament? Are you resolved to imitate Christ, the head and
shepherd of the Church, by teaching the Christian faith without thinking
of your own profit, solely for the well-being of the people you were sent
to serve?
Tim: By the grace of God, I will.

Bishop: Will you strive to fashion your own life and that of your household
according to the will of Christ?
Tim: By the grace of God, I will.

Oath of Canonical Obedience

Archdeacon: Do you swear that you will pay true and canonical obedience to the
Bishop of Ballarat and his successors, in all things lawful and honest?
Tim: By the grace of God, I will.

The Licensing

Bishop: Let the License be read.

The Registrar of the Diocese, Mr Peter Jarvis, reads the licence.

The Prayers of the People

Bishop: Let us turn to God in prayer for the Church in this place, for Tim, and
for all the people of the School, that sharing their ministries, they may
serve one another and make Christ known in the community.

All stand. Intercessions are offered by Harry Winton [5 GRA], Kate Hawker [1 HE] and Ms
Fiona Whitehouse with the following response:

Reader: Lord, in your mercy

All: Hear our prayer

The Commissioning
Tim kneels before the Bishop.
Bishop: Almighty God, give to your servant Tim grace and power to fulfil this
ministry among those now committed to his charge; to watch over them
and care for them, to absolve and bless them in your name, and to
proclaim the gospel of salvation. Set him among your people to
minister the Sacraments of the New Covenant, accept at his hands the
holy and living Eucharistic sacrifice to the praise and glory of your
name, for their good, and the good of all your holy Church. As you
have called him to your service, make him worthy of your calling. Give
him wisdom and discipline to work faithfully with all his fellow servants
in Christ, so that the world may come to know your glory and your love.
Accept our prayers, most merciful Father, through your Son Jesus
Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit, belong glory and
honour, power and praise, now and for ever.
All: Amen
The Bishop hands Tim his license, saying:
Bishop: Receive the care of souls which is both yours and mine, in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen

Almighty God, as we have now set apart Dr Gaden for your work and

Selina, Ben and Molly. We pray for Fr Pete and all at this school who
assist Dr Gaden in his ministry. Help us to know that our Chaplaincy is
a team effort, and to value all who contribute to it. In Jesus’ name we
pray.

Reader: Dear God, as we rejoice that Doctor Gaden has come to minister
among us, so we pray for the community of St Peter’s, Ballarat, that
you will raise up faithful ministers there, and in all vacant ministries
around the Diocese, to the glory of your holy name.
All: Amen

Reader: Eternal God, you call us to ventures of which we cannot see the ending
by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go
out with courage, not knowing where we go but only that your hand is
leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Hymn

We are members of one family who sing the Grammar song

We rejoice in our diversity, and all of us belong
We’re supported by strong friendships and collegiality,
As we learn to be the people God fashioned us to be
And we celebrate the worth of all the lessons yet to learn
For there’s more of value in each one than we have yet discerned.

In this place of Christian ministry, we ask you, in your grace

To behold with your compassion the task we now embrace:
For the care of all your people, for the preaching of the word,
For the thoughtful proclamation of the glory of the Lord.
Bless your servant in the ministry he undertakes today
That in joy and in humility you guide him on the way.

So the spirit of connectedness will bind us into one

With all those who’ve gone before us, with all those yet to come
And with those who share our journey, our friends in present days
Whose lives are marked by service, by hopefulness and praise
Who with joy are yet discovering the truth of faith’s bold theme:
There is more of value in each one than ever we had dreamed.
