HADEETH 22

THE GREATEST OF ALL MAJOR SINS

1473. On the authority of 'Abdullaah ibn
Mas'ood (may Allah be pleased with him),
who said: I asked the Prophet (may Allah
raise his rank and grant him peace): Which
sin is greatest? He replied, "To ascribe a
partner to Allah when He [alone] has
created you." I said: That is truly severe
indeed! I asked: Then what? He replied,
"That you kill your child fearing that he
would eat with you." I asked: Then what?
He replied, "That you sleep with your
neighbor's wife." (Agreed upon)
‫ َو َعن َعْبد هللا بْن َم ْس ُعود _ َرض َي‬- 1473

‫ «أَ ْن‬:‫ال‬ َّ ‫ أَي‬: _ ‫َو َسلَّ َم‬
َ َ‫الذنْب أَ ْعظَ ُم عْن َد هللا؟ ق‬
‫ك‬ َ ‫ إ َّن ذل‬:‫ْت‬ ُ ‫» قُـل‬.‫ك‬ َ ‫ َو ُه َو َخلَ َق‬،‫تَـ ْج َع َل لل ن ًّدا‬
‫ « َوأَ ْن تَـ ْقُُ َل َولَ َد َك‬:‫ال‬َ َ‫ ثُـ َّم أَي؟ ق‬:‫ْت‬ ُ ‫يم! قُـل‬ٌ ‫لَ َعظ‬

UNDERSTANDING THE HADEETH:

1. The Creator holds the greatest right: How can the Creator be made equal to His creation!? How can
created things like us be taken as objects of worship!? Or be considered equal to or similar to Him in His
Names/Attributes, Lordship, or right to be worshipped alone?!
2. The crime of taking any life without right: From the worst of all major sins, right after shirk

(4:93) Whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Jahannam…anger…curses…

(17:33) Do not kill any soul that Allah has forbidden to be killed

3. The crime of murder is more severe when:

A) the victim is a family member, causing broken family relationships

B) it is accompanied with flawed creed, like thinking the children will take your provisions

C) ??? (didn’t hear a third case…)

4. The crime of adultery and fornication in general:

(17:32) Do not even approach zinaa, it is obscene and a terrible path

5. Why it is specifically more offensive with a neighbor's wife: because the neighbor trusts you and you
are supposed to safeguard his family and property like its your own!

6. Some of the neighbor's rights: protecting his family & sanctuary, covering his vulnerabilities, being kind
to him, keeping harm away from him

*Ustadh MR added a reminder about the last hadeeth (#21) to emphasize that.

*MR added: Jibreel kept admonishing the Prophet sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam about the rights of the neighbor
until he thought the neighbor might become an inheritor! [Bukhari/Muslim]

*MR added a hadeeth: "What about zina?" they said: haraam, Allah & His Messenger forbade it. "For a man
to fornicate with 10 women is less offensive of a crime than to fornicate with his neighbor's wife" "What
about stealing?" They said: haraam, Allah & His Messenger forbade it. "For a man to steal from 10 houses is
less offensive than stealing once from his neighbor's house!" [Musnad Ahmad, al-Bukhari's al-Adab al-Mufrad,
Saheehah #65]
