Greenhouse Gas Protocol supplies the world's most widely used GHG accounting standards. The
standards are designed to provide a framework for businesses, governments, and other entities to
measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions in ways that support their missions and goals.
The popularity of GHG Protocol standards is due in part to the widespread stakeholder outreach
and consultation that is facilitated by World Resource Institute (WRI) and World Business Council
for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) during each standard development project (GHG
Protocol, 2013).
The GHG Protocol is working to give cities the standards and tools they need to measure their
emissions, build more effective emissions reduction strategies, set measurable and more ambitious
emission reduction goals, and to track their progress more accurately and comprehensively. The
standards of the company were divided into seven to assure quality and a more effective GHG
Accounting.
1. Corporate Standard – The GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard
provides requirements and guidance for companies and other organizations, such as NGOs,
government agencies, and universities, that are preparing a corporate-level GHG emissions
inventory.
2. GHG Protocol for Cities – The Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas
Emission Inventories (GPC) provides a robust framework for accounting and reporting
guidance for designing national and subnational mitigation goals and a standardized
4. Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard – The Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3)
Standard allows companies to assess their entire value chain emissions impact and identify

emissions of a product and focus efforts on the greatest GHG reduction opportunities. This
7. Project Protocol – The GHG Protocol for Project Accounting is the most comprehensive,
policy-neutral accounting tool for quantifying the greenhouse gas benefits of climate
